Following on the heels of The Womanist Reader , The Womanist Idea offers a comprehensive, systematic analysis of womanism, including a detailed discussion of the womanist worldview (cosmology, ontology, epistemology, logic, axiology, and methodology) and its implications for activism. From a womanist perspective, social and ecological change is necessarily undergirded by spirituality – as distinct from religion per se – which invokes a metaphysically informed approach to activism.
Amazing. So incredibly insightful into how we can live in a way that truly honors others and cares for each other. This book is incredibly deep and I feel that I will likely revisit it every few years to refresh my perspective on life.
My Women's Studies education suffered because I have not had the opportunity to thoroughly investigate these theories until now. Womanism needs to be introduced at the undergraduate level. If that were to happen, I think more students would be able to connect with Women's Studies and learn different strategies to survive in academia.
Layli Phillips Maparyan offers a brilliant expansion of previous theories of womanism, creating a radically inclusive philosophy and worldview that draws on ancestral knowledge and offers us directions (inward and outward, simultaneously) for the future. Highly recommended.
