Vic Dunner has a problem: his ex-girlfriend has just been killed, and the Sheriff thinks he did it. Luckily, Vic also has a sister who, along with her pup, will dig into the matter and do what it takes to prove him innocent.

It's such a delight to go back to the town of Heywood! When the Sam Jones series wrapped up, I feared withdrawal symptoms, so it's a real treat to view Heywood through another character's eyes. Gina was introduced and fleshed out as a sidekick in the original series, and it's wonderful to see her shine as the main character of this series. This book feels like returning home after time away.

Thank you to BookSirens and Carly Winter for the chance to read this eARC. As always, my opinions are my own, honest and true.

The first book of Carly Winter and I thoroughly enjoy it. A cute cozy mystery with a twist. A talking dog called Daisy (took me a while but the character grew on me) and a plethora of relatable and fun characters along the way.

Gina is a 40 something divorcee with her own baggage and a grown kid. Her brother Vic is her very unreliable brother who is the prime suspect in the death of his ex-girlfriend in the eyes of the Sheriff.

To clear Vic’s name, Gina needs to find the real killer, because she knows if she doesn’t lazy Sheiff Mallory will stick to the easy route and pin it on Vic.

I wasn’t expecting the book to start off at the murder scene, but it worked!.

This was a good read. Gina's brother is being accused of murder. She knows he didn't do it. Now she has to figure out who actually did it. Thankfully, in the end she solves it.

The author of the Heywood Herbalist has created a cute spinoff with the Heywood Hounds coy Mysteries. Dog rescuer Gina Dunner is more than the usual type of "dog whisperer'. She not only talks to dogs, she can hear one of them talk back!. When she had hit her head on a tree branch her brain somehow got rewired and she can actually "hear" her dog Daisy telepathically talk to her. As readers of the first series know, the police chief is lazy and can't be trusted to investigate a crime properly. When Gina's brother is blamed for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, she needs to step in and solve the mystery herself. Winters writes cute, clever quick reads that are always enjoyable.

This was a very good first in series. There were moments that were very funny and the mystery wasn't too complicated to work out, while also having a few different suspects. Recommended.

This is a Combined Review of (Prequel)Tail Wags & Trouble & books (1)Dog Treats & Death (2)Paw Prints & Problems (3) Furballs & Fatalities.

After I downloaded the Heywood Hound books 1-3, I got an email from the author Carly Winter, which invited me to download the prequel, Tail Wags & Trouble. I had already started reading book 1 but I am glad I downloaded the prequel and read it first. It explains how the main character Gina Dunner came to own Daisy and why & how she can hear her rescued dog talk to her. Not to ruin a plot but it is a good story of the fiasco Gina goes through to rescue a stray dog. As someone who loves animals I find the storylines totally engaging and enjoyable! I have personally said to my dogs, I wish you could talk and tell me what is wrong or what you need. How great that would be to have a dog that could actually tell me!!

With a dead ex-husband, a son away at college Gina has a variety of jobs to pay the bills. She owns a Nail Salon, is a book ghost writer, volunteers rescuing strays and finding them new homes.

Book one involves her brother who is accused of murdering an ex-girlfriend, in book 2 a chef is murdered, book 3 the owner of the local hardware store, and as you guessed, Gina & Daisy get involved helping solve the crimes, and the fact that she is helping a a good looking deputy sheriff Trevor solve the murders while the lazy female Sheriff jumps to faulty conclusions adds to the entertainment! Deputy Trevor is a good guy & a good cop that wants to find the real killers. The story lines are engaging, fun and there is a little flirting with a good looking cop. The stories are well written, fun and very entertaining, not full of boring stuff that is not germain to the story. I really can't wait to read the next one. Definitely an author I will follow and already plan to buy books 4,5 & 6 and the additional Christmas book between books 2 & 3.

Good imaginative story writing, fun, fast reads & I definitely recommend people check out Carly Winter's books.

Although I haven't read anything by Carly Winter before, I quickly felt at home in Gina's world. The set up was nicely done early on, including the advent of Gina being able to talk with her dog, Daisy. We also learn of her childhood, which includes Gina and brother Vic being abandoned with their father when their mother simply left. As such, even while recognizing Vic's tendency to be a "bad boy" and his troubles in the past with the law, she cares about him and wants to help prove his innocence. Seems he's one of the last ones seen with Phoebe, a murder victim, and is Sheriff Mallory's prime suspect.

Gina is a fun character, one who not only loves dogs but is involved in dog rescue, making me like her immediately. Vic is working on a horse ranch, too, one that has a focus on Arabians and Quarter Horses, so he had that going for him, not to mention one of Gina's rescue dogs immediately takes to him. The other human character that grabbed my attention was feisty Annabelle with her talent for pranks. She seems to be one of the other carry-overs from the Heywood Herbalist series. Gina's dog, Daisy, who has a great sense of smell, was a bit of a hoot. While incredibly brave and helpful at times, Daisy is also pure dog, one that manages to annoy a goat with the expected results. Dog annoys goat. Goat chases dog.

So, who killed Phoebe? Why was she in the horse arena anyway? Should Gina believe the gossip she's hearing about the ranch owner? What advice does Annabelle give Gina? Why is the Sheriff so quick to assume Vic did it? Why doesn't Gina turn over the evidence she finds? How is Vic able to avoid arrest? Why is Gina suddenly thinking, basically, that she's lost her mind? Does Trevor, the deputy, believe Gina? Is there a potential romance budding? Why is Gina feeling so alone? Who...oh, enough teasers. This was a fun, easy read, so give it a read. My thanks to the author and #BookSirens for introducing me to a new series that I'm definitely looking forward to following. That epilogue already has me primed.

If you are looking for an easy cozy mystery with a likeable main character that has real quirks, then this book is for you. Gina is a 40 something divorcee with a son starting college, an unruly troublesome brother and pack of dogs, one of whom talks to her. It was a quick read for me. And I want to give any author full due for even writing a book, let alone one that writes many books, but I did not find this book in any way sophisticated (not that it was meant to be). The main character, while likeable, would have made more sense as a early 20 something woman. To me, she did not act or appear to act as a 40+ mother and divorcee. Her quips were generic and cliche. The talking dog did not add anything at all to the story, in my opinion. I really wanted it to. And even though Daisy "smelled" people around the body, that is all she did. My hope was that Daisy was going to be this super intelligent pup that finds the clues and evidence and tells Gina the killer's identity, then which Gina has to find the physical evidence to bring the police because she can't just say her dog told her the killer's identity. That's not what happened however.

The book begins right when the murder has occurred with Gina's brother calling for help because he is being fingered for the crime. In any police station across the US, at least I hope, they would never try to put a man in prison for the very little evidence, circumstantial even at best, that they had against her brother. The procedural parts were lazy and lax. The evidence gathering dull and unimaginative. The "suspenseful" parts were not suspenseful at all. I've read many a cozy mystery and this one did not live up to most of the other series that I've explored. I wouldn't voluntarily pick up and read the next one. I kept hoping for some cool twist at the end but it didn't come.

Thumbs up for all the efforts of the author and the plot ideas. Just wasn't executed to my satisfaction. And the talking dog was corny instead of cute. Which is a lot for me to say because I LOVE dogs and would love a good Dog sleuth story.

Quick read. Not much brain power needed. Entertaining enough.

I'm a huge fan of Carly Winter and when I got notice of this new series, I was all in. In "Dog Treats and Death" we're introduced to the talking dog character Daisy, and I loved it. Wasn't sure at first if a talking dog would work for me, but it really did! Daisy is just like any other character, actually smarter than most and she's adorable.

Gina's brother Vic has gotten himself in trouble again and since Gina loves her brother no matter what, as hard as that is sometimes, she'll do anything to figure out who really committed the murder that happened on the Ranch where Vic works. To make matters worse the victim was Vic's former love interest, and he was trying to get back together with her, then she shows up dead on the Ranch. Gina knows this isn't going to be easy, the police chief is incompetent, she's lazy and is determined to get Vic for the murder. Gina and Daisy have other plans and since Vic is hiding at Gina's house while the police search for him, Gina has to act quick to find the real kiler,

This was a super fun read and only took me an afternoon to finish it. I loved Daisy, she definitely made the story. I mean seriously who wouldn't want to communicate with their pet. This is a new series for Carly Winter and I'm all in! Sign me up for book 2, I'm hooked?

Carly Winters has created the start of another great mystery series. In her spin-off from Heywood Herbalist series, she gives Gina, the slightly rough around the edges nail salon owner and dog rescuer center stage. This book was so much fun! After getting a head injury, Gina finds out she can actually talk to her dog, Daisy and understand what she’s saying. It’s a fun quirk that adds to the entertainment of the story. In this story, Gina’s ne’er-do-well brother is accused of murdering an ex-girlfriend. Gina sets out to prove his innocence with Daisy’s help and the help of Travis, the inept sherrif’s deputy. The rest of the Heywood characters are in the book too, Mallory, the useless sherrif; Annabelle, the 80s throwback who now runs the herb shop, and Doug, the reformed drug addict who is no living with Annabelle and helping out at Sage Advice.

All in all, it’s a great mystery with likeable, relatable characters. I’m especially fond of Gina because she’s so very human. She has very little patience with fools, and a mouth that sometimes gets in the way of her investigation. In other words, she’s a hoot!

Dog Treats and Death is the first book in a new series by Carly Winter. If you have read the Heywood Herbalist series then you have already met Gina and her dog Daisy. This series focuses on Gina and Daisy. It starts with Gina's brother Vic being wanted for murder in the death of a former girlfriend. The sheriff always goes for the easy suspect instead of looking at other alternatives so it is up to Gina with the surprising aid of her talking dog Daisy to find the murderer and prove her brother's innocence.

The mystery itself was well written and interesting. Daisy was a big help to solving the mystery and I liked her contributions to solving it. I think the Sheriff's deputy, Trevor will be a good love interest for Gina and I look forward to seeing their relationship develop.

I usually enjoy a good cozy mystery that includes talking animals as I find they usually add the humor to the story but in this case I just found Daisy to often be a bit annoying. I'm fairly sure her dialogue was intended to show her enthusiasm and love for Gina but often she just came across as whiny and then she wasn't cute or humorous just annoying.

I received an ARC of this book. My opinion is given voluntarily.

This was a fun read. I read one of the newer books in the series and just had to go back to see what I missed. While it wasn't necessary, as it still didn't go into much detail of why she can talk to her dog it was certainly fun. This book continues on from where the end of the authors last series finished off and focuses on Gina. Gina is an unusual character as she can talk to her dog Daisy, she holds her own in a fight and isn't afraid to speak her mind, as you can imagine all these things can and do land her in trouble. I really liked Daisy in this book. The mystery wasn't complicated but played out nicely with a novice amuther slueth, there was a few suspects to keep it interesting and the reader guessing. Off to start book two.
When Gina's brother asks for help, despite there differences she is quick to drop everything. He is being accused of killing his ex girlfriend and the sheriff doesn't want to look any further. Rather than let he get arrested she hides him in her home and sets out to prove him innocent. She has a secret weapon, her talking dog sniffed out two other human scents near the body, now all she has to do is find a way to explain how she knew who was there. Oh and find the killer.

Talking animals is a tricky ingredient, but Gina’s talking dog Daisy is as believable as can be, to me anyway. She’s a dog and acts like a dog, well, apart from the talking of course. But Gina’s the only one who can hear her and you can’t see it on the dog.

Enough about the dog, but I didn’t expect it to work out so well.

Gina was raised by her absent father with an older brother, Vic, who is often in trouble with the law. Now he’s the main suspect in his girlfriend’s murder and he begs Gina to help him.

Of course she will, he’s her brother! But he’s also quite untrustworthy…

Gina is well evolved as a character and in small bits and pieces we get to know her past and understand her now. Other characters are more vague to begin with but the important ones are getting more meat to their bones as the story progresses.

The mystery is well planned and I at least (maybe others?) didn’t solve it myself before Gina did.

I enjoyed the book and would like to read the next book in the series.

Some of these characters and places may seem familiar to you if you’ve read the Heywood Herbalist series. However you do not have to have read those books, although I do recommend them, to enjoy this story.
In this story we follow Gina a woman of many trades as she tries to clear her older brother Vic of murder charges which she’s 99% sure he’s innocent of. She has helped solve a mystery or two before but this is the first time she’s lead the investigation. Luckily she has the help of her talking canine companion Daisy who picks up clues that a human could not. She also works in tandem with Trevor a deputy in the sheriff’s department who believes that Vic is innocent as well.
What you can expect a town full of eccentrics, silly doggie shenanigans, a woman trying to figure out her next chapter in life now that her son is off in college and a thorny mystery with a lot of suspects and light on evidence that doesn’t point to Vic. Most of all you’ll get an enjoyable cozy to while away an afternoon or evening with and a new series to love!.

Another wonderful series set in the little town of Heywood, Arizona.
In a little town full of colorful characters there sure is a lot of murders.
Gina Dunner and her dog Daisy are now the new go to when there is a mystery to solve, she learned from the best and has some big shoes to fill.
Gina's brother Vic is in trouble, his girlfriend has been murdered and he is the number one suspect.
Gina and her talking dog Daisy are on the trail to solve the murder and save her brother.
I am so excited for a new series set in a town that I have come to love.
If this is the first you have read from this author you are in for a treat. Once you read one of her books, you just want to read them all.
I can not wait to see what is in store in the future with this town.

I don't think I've ever said this before.. but this book could have used an extra 50+ pages. I had to double check a couple of times in the first few chapters that this was, in fact, the first book in the series. I struggled with back story that wasn't actually clear that seemed to just be shoved in randomly. I also struggled a bit with the talking dog part of this - but it is something I haven't read recently, so combined with a cozy mystery, it was worth trying out! The author did a great job of bringing the talking dog to life with a combination of what you think a dog would say (I MISSED YOU I MISSED YOU) as well as aiding in finding the bad guy.

As a marathon runner, really made me cringe when they said the marathon that a character had read was 30 miles.

A first in a cozy mystery series featuring a dog lover and her talking dog. Very short, quick read that has multiple other books in the series and looks like there are even adjacent series to hop into if you like the other characters! Thanks Book Sirens for the ARC e-book.

A ghostwriter who talks to dogs? Count me in! I saw the inklings of this story in the final saga of Sam Jones's story. But to be honest, this book exceeded my expectations. When Sam Jones' Heywood journey wrapped up, I was concerned about the folks in that small town. Who would solve the murders, surely not Sherriff Mallory.

Thankfully, Sam's good friend Gina is ready to put down her file and take up the super sleuth mantle! Add in a talking dog and you have the makings for a great follow up. When Gina's brother calls her because his ex-girlfriend Phoebe has died and Sherriff Mallory is looking at him as the prime suspect, Gina and Daisy step in to find the real murderer.

Filled with the quirky characters we have grown to love, this newest series will scratch that itch left behind by Sam Jones' lawyer.

I got to know Gina Dunner in the Heywood Herbalist series, and am totally delighted she now has her very own series! Gina rescues dogs, so I immediately relate to her. After an accident she gained the ability of having conversations with one of her dogs, Daisy, and it's just an adorable part of this new series! In this first book, Gina is tasked with finding the murderer of her brother's ex-girlfriend. The bumbling sheriff of the little mountain town of Heywood, Arizona, just like in the Heywood Herbalist series, is on the wrong track and is convinced Gina's brother is the killer. Although her brother does have a sketchy past, Gina knows he is no killer and sets out to prove it. Her brother's freedom is in her hands and Gina is extra determined! I'm excited to read this book and look forward to many more in the (hopefully) near future! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I enjoyed the Heywood Herbalist series by Ms. Winter, so was happy to see she is continuing to write a spin-off series featuring Sam's friend, Gina and her partner, Daisy. Oh, btw, Daisy is her dog. Who talks to her and helps solve the murder. This book, while it has a talking dog, the only one who can talk and hear Daisy is Gina. She isn't altogether sure why she can and sometimes wonders if she's just imagining it.

Needless to say, Gina is a complex character, close to her family, irritated with her brother who's a suspect and missing her college age son. She fills her empty nest with rescue dogs and her nail business. She is totally believable and endearing in her own matter of fact way.

If you liked Heywood Herbalist, you'll love Heywood Hounds. Familiar people and a familiar town, but enough quirkiness and fun in a fresh way that will make you comeback for more. Like I intend to do!.

Dog Treats and Death is the first book in the Heywood Hounds Cozy Mystery Series by Carly Winter. The main character, Gina, is a single, middle-aged lady who stays busy running a part-time nail salon, ghost writing books, and rescuing dogs. Gina can hear one of her dogs (Daisy) talk to her. It’s a pretty cute addition to the book; it’s funny hearing how excited Daisy gets for Gina’s attention. The book is a spin-off from the Heywood Herbalist series so we get to see how the people we grew to know (the town folks) are doing. In this book, Gina is helping her brother, Vic, who is wanted for questioning in a murder. It’s a good murder mystery that’s a quick read and a lot of fun. We get to hear Gina’s thoughts, which are very true to life, making her very likeable. I look forward to the next in the series.

I first discovered the characters in this book as part of the 12 Days of Christmas Mysteries. It interested me enough to want to read more, so I went to what I thought was the first book in the series. But there are references back to other murders happening before this book. I did some checking, and apparently it's a spin off from the Heywood Herbalist series, which I have not read. There was enough background provided for the reader to figure out what had gone on before. I feel as if I've taken a long and winding road. I've downloaded the first book in the Heywood Herbalist series. I hope it doesn't turn out to be yet another spin off from a previous series!

I loved the setting and the talking dog. I liked the main character better in the Christmas book. I definitely didn't like her brother. And the lazy sheriff who tries to pin crimes on the first suspect that she comes across is a tired cliche!

Dog Treats and Death picks up right where Heywood Herbalist leaves off with one of those characters, Gina, takes the lead with her sidekick dog Daisy. The twist is after hitting her head, Gina can hear her dog talk. Oh boy does that lead to some funny situations when she talks to Daisy. In this book, it is up to Gina to prove her brother, Vic, did not kill his ex-girlfriend. Gina has the help of Deputy Trevor, Annabelle, and of course, Daisy to prove Vic's innocence because lazy Sheriff Mallory always takes the easy way out and arrests the first person who might have committed a crime. Enjoyable story and characters and nice to stay in Heywood. I'm glad some of the characters continue in this series as we have gotten to know them in the previous series. I received and ARC and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

A smart new amateur sleuth with an exceptional sidekick.
This book is a spinoff from the Heywood Herbalist mysteries so there are some references to the characters from that series, including our protagonist Gina Dunner.
Gina gets a call from her brother asking for help. His ex-girlfriend has been murdered and the police have him in their sights as the culprit. Since Gina knows first hand how lazy Sheriff Mallory is she has to help Vic clear his name. With the help of Daisy, her dog that talks to her, and several of her fellow Heywood business ownwe friends gina goes about finding other suspects. An easy read with a good mystery I enjoyed this book and recommend it to cozy mystery readers.

Dog Treats and Death is book #1 in the Heywood Hounds Cozy Mysteries series by Carly Winter.

Gina Dunner is a salon owner, dog rescuer, and amateur sleuth with her friend Sam. Sam is off traveling the world when Gina’s brother is accused of murder. Can Gina find the real killer to save her brother?

I miss Sam but Gina makes a great leading lady herself. It was fun visiting Heywood again. Daisy, one of Gina’s rescues, is absolutely adorable! It was fun watching Gina trying to play nice to get information. The mystery investigation had laugh out loud moments and I enjoyed the ending. I can’t wait for the next book to see Gina’s next investigation.

Gina seems to work hard balancing her dog rescue work with her ghost writing and her nail salon - being a single mom in a small town is a lot of work

Daisy is a charming talking puppy companion, but she seems willful in addition to smart - always a combination for trouble and fun

Gina might tussle and rustle with her troubles prone brother Vic, yet they seem to have strong ties and seem to try to be there for each other, regardless

small town twists, secrets and lies leave some mysteries brewing and troubles for Vic have their blowback on Gina

really enjoying the Heywood relationships dynamics and tangled friends, family, outlaws and exes connections, alongside the mysteries and mayhem.

Was out of my normal reading genre with this book. Wanted to try and see if this genre is for me and so my honest review is that this is not my go to reading type, but enjoyed it. There was a lot of levity even amidst some of the darkest mystery as to whether our amateur sleuth's brother, Vic, is a killer of his on again and off again girlfriend, Phoebe.

The talking Dog, Daisy, added her own unique perspective to the story and enjoyed how all the dogs added their touch with the humans they love. Gina, our nail designer sleuth is close to her son, Jacob along with father and brother, Vic. There were plenty of twists and turns for Gina to solve and save her brother.

Good start for someone new to this

An interesting one in that Gina is not very good with people outside of her salon, but she'll need to learn to be able to ask questions if she hopes to help her brother. With the help of her dog Daisy, who she can communicate with and her new partnership with a local deputy, she may be able to help clear her brother of murder charges.

Gina stumbles her way through finding clues but thanks to Vic providing some insights into what was going on, she does manage to figure out what happened to Phoebe.

Their relationship was interesting. She is better with her dogs than her friends and family. However, she does step out of her comfort zone to help her brother.
