Sweet Alps Mates #1

His Sassy Omega

Rate this book
Lachlan Sinclair

Clashing with a smart-mouthed, sarcastic omega was the cherry on top of my already bad day. Getting tossed out of my favorite place for sweet treats was not how I’d planned to start my morning.

I’d always played by the rules and done what was expected of me. My whole life, I’d known what I’d wanted in my mate. Until he was standing in front of me, nothing like I’d expected him to be, sassing me and ordering me about. The opposite of everything I’d thought I’d ever want.

But now he was all I did want. I just had to convince him of that.

Quinn Rafferty

When a huge alpha barged his way to the front of the line in my bakery, it was anything but a meet-cute. My sassy mouth promptly told him exactly where he could take his perfectly formed behind. Right back out the door he’d just come in and don’t come back, thank you very much.

Then our hands touched, and sparks of electricity shot between us, and my soul screamed Mate.

He was big and sexy and growly, and smelled like every wishful dream I’d ever had, and forgotten. Making me want things I’d never wanted before. Making me want to run from him as fast as my legs could carry me. Secretly, hoping he would chase me.

His Sassy Omega is the first book in the Sweet Alps Mates series but can be read as a standalone, with no cliffhangers and a HEA. It contains opposites attract, age gap, shifters, knotting, and mpreg.

**Trigger warning: There is a situation where terminating a pregnancy is discussed between the MC’s, but it is only a discussion. If this could trigger you in any way, please skip that chapter. This book also deals with pregnancy complications that may be triggering for some readers. Please heed the trigger warnings. This book does contain a HEA.

Raiven Matthews

Raiven Matthews lives in the Mid-West, with her very spoiled cat, Declan. An avid reader from a young age, she discovered MM romance while reading fan fiction, and never looked back. Her days are fueled by lots of coffee and cuss words, and often plots her books on her commute to her RL job. She has always believed in happily-ever-after, but she was always the girl with follow-up questions. What happened when Cinderella put on that shoe and rode off to the castle? What came after Beast turned into a handsome prince? While she loves when her characters fall in love, she also believes in sprinkling in a big dose of reality, and real-life situations, (even if she is writing omegaverse mpreg) to get there.

Oh boy.

This is a new-to-me author, and I was not impressed. Because reasons:

- Editing is atrocious; so many typos, misspellings, and misuse of the apostrophe, I wanted to weep.

- Why is this a shifter story? The shifting aspect added nothing to the plot. One of the MCs shifts once, and that's it. I felt like the author wanted to throw every possible trope at this book but didn't develop any of them well.

- Not particularly interesting or likeable MCs. Quinn isn't so much sassy as he is defensive and rude. I liked Lachlan more, but he didn't have much of a personality besides being dependable.

- Problematic mpreg development. Quinn is adamant about not wanting kids. When his birth control fails and he finds out he's prego, he considers terminating the pregnancy, but one look at Lachlan's sad eyes, and he changes his mind. And, of course, as soon as the babies arrive, he's thrilled to be a dad (it helps that his mate is worth ten figures).

Women (and other people with a uterus) rarely change their mind about abortion, and if they're manipulated into having the baby, they often regret it. That's not how choice works, and I'm giving the author a massive side-eye for putting such a glossy, unrealistic spin on a traumatic situation.

- I don't like reading about filthy rich MCs. It's gross. Nobody needs billions of dollars. Why would Quinn even have worried about having to stay home with the babies? They could have hired dozens of nannies and housekeepers. Most people don't have such luxury.

This story isn't all bad. There are cute bits, some scorching steamy scenes, and a cozy epilogue.

I'm also curious about the dynamic between Wade, Lachlan's assistant, and Finn, Lachlan's brother.

I feel like it's rare to come across an actually really well done Mpreg story that when I do it's so refreshing, and worthy of 5 stars.

This is well written, with great world and character building, and while "fated mates" is a thing I like how this author didn't have it be insta-love, and our characters might a little against what fate has seemingly determined for them.

It gives time for them to actually fall in love.

Yeah, these two are fated mates so it still moves a little too fast, but it wasn't *quite* so fast as to be insta-love.

Quinn definitely fights against it for a long ass time. Because Quinn isn't like a stereotypical omega, at all.

He's sassy and outspoken and independent and he doesn't want to be tied down like it is expected omegas to be. To just be a bearer of children, stay at home, taking care of their alpha with no other purpose. That is nothing like what Quinn is, but that is what is expected of omegas.

For Lachlan, that's what he's thought he's wanted all his life. Because of what his father told him for years before he died. Lachlan, being technically the "oldest" of quadruplets, was the one expected to take of the Sinclair dynasty, as it were, and so more was expected of him than his 3 "younger" brothers.

And so his father heaped all his expectations on Lachlan. About how he should always act in public, so as not "tarnish" the Sinclair name, but also how to act as an Alpha, and what he should want in his omega life partner. An omega who is docile and "traditional" and a homebody.

Turns out, Quinn is nothing like what Lachlan thought he wanted. But is everything he truly wants, deep in his soul.

Because Lachlan spent his whole life projecting how he was supposed to be and not who he really was. Because underneath his big, muscular 6'5" frame, is a marshmallow center. And all he truly wants is children to take care of, and while Lachlan doesn't exactly stop his work when the time comes, he primarily stays home and takes care of the household duties more often than not, and the children so Quinn can still run his dream - his bakery. And Lachlan loves it.

Not the stereotype for an Alpha at all.

See, Quinn turns out to be basically be the opposite. He doesn't need or want an Alpha ordering him about, telling him what to do. He does learn to love when Lachlan takes care of him, in his soft, gentle way. And in some areas of their relationship, Lachlan is more "alpha" than not, but for the most part Quinn is fairly independent.

And while at first it seems like they aren't suited, with what Lachlan thought he wanted in an omega and Quinn not thinking he needed an alpha at all, it turns out they're perfect for each other, once they work through their issues and all that.

I enjoyed these two a lot, I loved their chemistry. The sex was wonderfully steamy. And the romance was great too, for all Quinn tried to fight it. But he couldn't, eventually.

There is the issue of Quinn seemingly not wanting children and Lachlan wanting them. But I actually liked how this book addressed that and how these two actually communicated and talked it out, getting Quinn to a place where he actually wanted children. It didn't feel forced just because it's an mpreg story and well...we're getting mpreg. It felt like, once they got to the meat of the issue, they were able to work it out and work it out in a believable way. I liked that.

So, if you're into mpreg, I definitely recommend this. This is definitely one of the stronger mpreg stories I've read and it's so refreshing to get a really well written mpreg story.

I'm off to dive into the next book in this series about Finn, the third oldest quadruplet, and Wade, Lachlan's assistant and Quinn's best friend. They have a fantastic enemies-to-lovers thing going on, even though they're fated mates. Onto the next!

original review:
i loved this so much.
the characters felt so real and i loved them.
yes, editing is needed and i feel like this should make me lower my rating, but surprisingly i loved this story so much that i can’t help but give this what it deserves: 5 stars.
yes, it was long, but it was necessary. the pace was perfect and i loved every second of it.
i truly hope each brother will get a book!

📝 REVIEW & THOUGHTS:

“Sometimes, Lachlan, what we think we want does not come in the package that we think it will. You must be open to all possibilities. Fate will bring you what you need.”

An alpha yearning for a traditional omega (old-fashioned: stay at home, children, cooking etc.) ends up with a sassy independent progressive omega as his fated mate.

Guess me intrigued in reading what would happen between these two lol

I loved that these two guys were not the stereotypical omega and alpha. Thea author played around with submissive and dominant traits on both characters, and it worked really well. A nice change from once in a while, especially for omegaverse.

🏷️ TROPES & TAGS (possible spoilers):

Genre/subgenre: omegaverse contemporary
Pairing: MM
POV: 1st person, dual
Angst: low to medium
Burn: medium
Vibe/mood: sweet
Pet names: baby, sass ass
HEA: yes

Alpha/omega
Opposites attract
Fated mates (but no insta-love)
Age gap (23/38)
Shifters
Size difference (bulk, not much in height)
Insta-attraction
Some push and pull
An alpha with a sweet tooth and a baker omega
Mpreg

🌶️ SPICE & K!NKS (possible spoilers):

Strict top/bottom or versatile: vers (most is top/bottom, they switch only once scene at the end, unfortunately lol)
Heat: 5 scenes, medium heat
Knotting
Rimming
Mild restraints
Mild spanking
Bossy omega with a dominant streak
Alpha with a submissive streak

⚠️ CONTENT WARNINGS (possible spoilers):

Unplanned pregnancy

Pregnancy complications
MC has been cheated on in the past (not by other MC)

😤 LITTLE RANT (possible spoilers):

While I think the reasons for Quinn not wanting kids are totally valid, as a woman who doesn’t want kids myself, it grated a little on my nerves that the message I got from this story is that not wanting kids wasn’t necessarily a “I don’t want kids, period”, and it was more like “I don’t want kids because I don’t want to have to be a stay-at-home parent”. So once that was resolved with the agreement that the alpha would stay home, Quinn was fine having the babies. I dunno. I’m sure this happens to people. Thinking of a situation vs being in one is vastly different, I know. But I didn’t like this part in the plot that much, I would’ve appreciated if it was more obvious from the beginning that Quinn did want kids, but didn’t want to be a stay-at-home omega from the get go. But maybe I’m just projecting my own convictions, insecurities and reactions to “defend” my point of view as I’ve had to irl to comments like “you’re a woman, that’s what women want”. No. The. Fuck. It. Doesn’t. Have. To. Be. 🤣🤣

💬 QUOTES (possible spoilers):

Did anyone ask Cinderella what happened after she put that slipper on? Look, if you lost your shoe after midnight, you were probably too drunk to see straight. Those were the facts.

Sometimes, Lachlan, what we think we want does not come in the package that we think it will. You must be open to all possibilities. Fate will bring you what you need.

Quinn Rafferty was the opposite of everything I’d ever imagined I would want in a mate. But want him I did. With every cell of my body.

“Oh no, I don’t eat sugar.” I gulped. “Ever.” “Never.” And. We. Were. Done.

“He doesn’t eat sugar.” I could hear my own horrified tone. Wade laughed outright this time. “There’s the deal breaker.”

“…I see you happy. You need to hold onto all the happiness you can get in this world, Lachlan, for whatever time you have. Hold onto it tight. With whoever gives it to you.”

“I’m right here, Quinn. I’ve been here all along. You’re not alone, but you keep acting like you are. Like you’re in this thing by yourself. I’m right fucking here.”

* Fyi about 🌶️ levels: I rate spice on a combination of quantity, quality, length, intensity and explicitness of the scenes. K!nks are listed separately and generally do not directly affect the steam level to keep it fair for non k!nky books.

Despite the mpreg I loved this book! Writing is great, characters are interesting, the sassy Omega is indeed sassy, words are spelled correctly (including "vise"!), and I am looking forward to the rest of the series! This was my first by this author so I am glad to have more great books to look forward to!

The only thing that bugged me was towards the end where Quinn says Lachlan went through his (financial) books without his permission, because that seems so unlike Lachlan. Luckily he says it caused a huge fight, which would've disappointed me if that was not the case. But other than that, (and their first meeting), they are both respectful of each other's boundaries and I was really anticipating the resolution of the main conflict between them.

Great book!

A new to me author. This just did not work for me. Editing was awful, lots of repetitive dialogue and too much telling not showing really had me struggling to get through this. The characters were okay, but I was not a fan of the writing. I doubt I'll go back for the next one.

Also, "being so OCD" is not a thing. Don't use it to describe a character's tendency towards organization and neatness. It's a serious disorder that can be devastating to those who have it. It's not a character quirk. From now on I'm just going to call a DNF when I run across it in a book.

It’s been a while since I read an Omegaverse and I’m glad I picked this up, because I enjoyed it immensely.

It was sweet, emotional and hilarious. I really adored the personalities and the dynamic between Quinn and Lachlan, neither of them fell into the typical roles that are usually assigned to an Omega and Alpha. And this was something that I personally really enjoyed here.they both worked out so well together and found exactly the one they needed.

I would give it 5 stars but there were so many grammatical and spelling errors that I have to take one away

Great story, awful grammar & punctuation

Loved this story and the characters, but this author needs to learn the difference between plurals and possesives. She punctuated with commas at by taking a handful of them and throwing them at each page. I look forward to future stories but dread slogging through the grammar and punctuation.

It’s no one’s fault but my own!!

I should’ve known that any title with the adjective ‘sassy’ in it would not be my cup of tea!!

It’s pretty cliche, has some questionable actions, weird dialogue (at one point he tells the omega that his ass feels like a hot volcano around his dick!) and I don’t want to read about the tall, thick, rich, strong, powerful alpha anymore.

Not for me so DNF @ 38%

4,5 gwiazdki.
Mpreg to trudna rzecz do napisania. Tu było okej, ale d..y nie urwało.
Reszta bardzo mi się podobała - zarówno MC, ich dynamika i charaktery, jak i postaci poboczne.
Na pewno przeczytam inne książki z tej serii.

Did I just discover a new omegaverse author that I actually like?! It has been so long since I binge read a story, let alone a series, but something about the Sweet Alps Mates Series has me positively captivated.

Now, I will disclaimer, the first few chapters are an information dump, they are slightly boring but I promise; if you push through those, once Quinn and Lachlan meet, buckle up, you are in for a wild ride. I don't know if we could classify Quinn and Lachlan as a meet-cute but their first meeting definitely left an impression. I adored Quinn, he was strong, sassy, takes sh*t from no one, fiercely independent; basically the man stole my heart. Then there is Lachlan who Quinn was more than happy to put in his place.

The chemistry and sexual tension between these two was off the charts. And while Fate may have meddled a little, I liked the fact that they still took time to build a solid relationship. They didn't conform to the traditional alpha/omega roles you see in so many omegaverse stories. And I positively adored that! Lachlan grew leaps and bounds in the story and Quinn learned how to compromise. The story was such a refreshing change of pace that I already started the sequel.

Oh boy...

The premise of this story I got and it was fine. The execution could have been a lot better.

First off, this was edited and changed on Amazon, which is great, but it needed a couple of more rounds of edits. This story suffers from too many words and paragraphs. This should have been a 200 page story not an almost 400 page one. There were so many things that should have been cut.

Second off, I honestly though at the beginning that this was going to be a R/D across the aisle story and I was ready to end and move on, but then I wondered if this was just a ham fisted way of creating a stick in the mud guy and kept going. Just so everyone knows, Northern CA has normal people and the rest are not "common" people.

Thirdly, the story. We have here an older Alpha who thought he wanted a "sweet" omega who would take care of the house, kids, and him and be obedient. What he got was a "sassy" omega who wants none of that. We know he is sassy as the word sass is used over and over again.

They are fated mates who fight against it, well the omega does, and after the longest freaking time find out they are preggers and we all know it ends with a HEA.

The good parts of this was the fact that the omega ended up the dom and the alpha was more subservient. Not too much, cause he was Alpha!! as we are told repeatedly.

The bad part was the whole baby storyline. The alpha was supposedly supporting the omega's choice but then did a dance when he saw the ultrasound? Then basically talks the omega into keep being pregnant. It was all your body, your choice until it wasn't.

This was a bad pregnancy and trigger warnings for those who cannot read about almost losing a baby. Maybe I missed the warning as I was taken by surprised by it.

I really do try to overlook poor editing and enjoy a story, but when it's so often and so many things that it truly does pull me from the story - yeah, that I'm going to call out.

With an editor that can help clean this up and also tighten up the storytelling - this is a very long book for no reason as far as extreme conflict (and should be more like 200 pages, not 400), it could be fun.

So good!!!

I loved this book!!!
Quinn and Lachlan were absolutely perfect fir each other throughout their misguided attempts to deny the truth.
I loved the snarky banter between them and the way they just accepted each other and their quirks.
I didn't expect this book to hit me on an emotional level and I was so glad when it did.
The way these two connected to each other and slowly fell in love was absolutely beautiful.
Their chemistry was scorching hit as well.
I have found a new author and am definitely looking forward to more from them.

Can I just say that I really enjoyed the fact that Quinn was unsure whether he wanted to go through with the pregnancy or if he wanted to abort? It wasn’t just an fast automatic switch from “no I don’t want kids” to “oh I actually really do want kids.” He really thought on it and deliberated. Also, I really enjoyed how Lachlan acted towards Quinn during this questioning and stressful time. He wasn’t pressuring, acting bad towards Quinn, anything. He made his feelings known in an appropriate way, while ensuring Quinn knew it was his choice either way. It was a breath of fresh air to read.

Two misspelled words before I made it to 2%.

WRIGHT a check? Seriously?

There are also spacing and punctuation issues all over the place.

I hate it because it looks like it might be a good book, but if the editing's already a bit of a mess this early on, I'd hate to see how it is throughout the rest of the book.

DNF @ 2%.

Not great but not bad either.
Went on for way longer than it needed to.

I could actually skip paragraphs and still grasp what went on.

Not a fan of Quinn but I really liked Lachlan.

I only started this because I want to read the 4th book which has the secret baby trope which is one of my absolute favortites.

So I am still looking forward to that.

I love finding new authors that can draw you in with just a blurb or a teaser. Raiven Matthews has managed to do both. Lachlan didn’t know that he had been eating treats from his fated mate’s shop for some time until one day while running late, he stumbles into Quinn’s shop. Quinn is sassy and independent and tries to fight Lachlan every step of the way. But they are still drawn to each other either way. Quinn isn’t like most Omega’s. He doesn’t want to be at home with kids; they were never in his plan. But when things change, the pair work together to make things work. I can’t wait for the rest of this series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

2.5 stars

His Sassy Omega starts a series from this debut author and before I even talk about the storyline of the book, I do need to address the complete lack of editing. I was able to confirm that the currently published version looks exactly the same as the version that I was given for review. There is no editor listed in the book and there is no evidence of any editing or proofreading being done on the book. Almost every word that should be a plural is written as a possessive—so more than one beta is “beta’s” instead of “betas,” more than one year is “year’s” instead of “years.” This happened almost every time there is any word that needed to be plural and it was maddening. There were also many instances of the incorrect word being used or incorrect spelling, such as “underware” or “threw” being used in place of “through,” and phrases that made no sense such as, “the salty, chickening broth.” Some of these issues would show up as incorrect on the most basic of writing software and even a Word document would alert the writer to the errors. The punctuation is also random and the entirety of this grammatical nonsense made the whole book painful to read.

Read Michelle's review in its entirety here.

56%: Quinn has told Lachlan he doesn't want kids. Hard stop. Lachlan responded to this reasonably, which I was really happy with. Then Quinn wakes up in the middle of the night and throws up for no reason, this being on top of him being super exhausted and headache-y all the time. If he turns out to be pregnant and doesn't get an abortion I'm throwing my fucking Kindle across the room.

75%: Yup, he's preggers. Then there is this amazing quote from Lachlan to Quinn, when Quinn is explaining why he doesn't want babies "I'm talking now, and you are going to shut up and listen for once in your life". Charming.

77%: Quinn decides to have the babies because Lachlan wants them. Yay. What a surprise. I was a responsible person and did not actually throw my kindle.

I was so disappointed with how this book went and the fact that the pregnancy was such a large part of it. It honestly wasn't poorly written, I just hated the decisions made.

1.75⭐️

This is book has to be the first draft because there’s no way this has been edited in any way shape or form. The amount of grammar mistakes, wording mistakes, and any other mistake that is even possible is atrocious.

So much unnecessary repetition — a character says something, then haha an internal monologue about it, and then mentions it again like it was brought up the first time. Saying things in dialogue solely for the reader is not a good thing, e.g. Quinn telling Lachlan “And we can’t get STDs.” when discussing condoms is totally unnecessary considering they’re both shifters and know this, the only relevant part about the condoms was the birth control but because the reader doesn’t know it the author felt compelled to say it probably but it just sounds off. There’s multiple instances of things like that and it misses a lot of narration beats and feels clunky overall.

How did this get even published? I’m not trying to be a hater just to hate, I’m just stating facts because it was brutal to read and hindered the entire experience so much. This is a published book and should have some standards. It’s crazy how high this is rated.

The plot was okay though. It was a typical cliche shifter omegaverse mpreg shabang. A rich alpha, Lachlan, is stuck up and wants a perfect good little omega for himself. But then he meets his assistant’s best friend and cafe owner Quinn, who is not like anyone else (sassy) and BOOM they realize they are fated mates. Let’s just say the plot is Wattpad quality on a good day but I did enjoy it, that’s why I didn’t DNF.

Lachlan is a quadruplet, all of them alpha males. Why one of them has nearly fully grey hair already at 38 is none of my business but it is quite fascinating. He’s the oldest and the most “boring” but in fact he is enlightened when Quinn entered in his life and suddenly he is smiling and happy and into bondage. Crazy, I know.

Quinn, the local dealer for sweet treats and coffee aka a cafe owner, is 23 and unusually tall for an omega (which gets mentioned a LOT). He is also very much anti baby but because it’s his fated mate he switches up real quick. Again, crazy.

The whole kink club, Playgrounds or whatever, owned by Jamie was…interesting. I’m gonna be honest, I know you can’t kink shame, but DIAPERS???? A NURSERY??? what the fuck. And it was just breezed through…

I could tell the author reads radiation from the way this was written. I can’t explain how, but it’s so obvious.

Call it morbid curiosity but I wanna read some of the other books to see what’s up. I know they won’t be any easier to read but at least I will have the time of my life laughing at how bad it is.

(If you’re the author and read this, please get a better editor I’m begging you)

I've never read anything by this author before so it was a gamble because I also wasn't one hundred percent sold on all the tropes involved either. But I must say, I was happily surprised by the story we got. It wasn't what I expected and I was charmed by the characters, especially by Lachlan and his evolution. Quinn's evolution didn't take center stage for me, but his supported and encouraged Lachlan's so it worked out for me in the end.

There was a whole lot of telling, unhelpful description and explanation, and downright boring inserts in the beginning, I skimmed nearly whole chapters, a lot of them, only slowing down for the dialogue parts or to make sure I wasn't missing anything important in the character exposition bits and, to be honest, I didn't miss much at all.

Once I got to the meat of the meet-awkward I was very much in and couldn't be pulled away. Even with the absolute gratuitous editing issues. I'm the type of reader that can skip most of the editing issues to get to the story and what I will say for the issues here in this book, they were consistent. The incessant and unnecessary comma usage was consistent so it could be easily ignored.

Anyway, Lachlan learned to embrace everything that made him him and came to terms with his upbringing in a way I didn't expect. Those moments of realization worked together with his exploration with Quinn and showed him all that he'd buried inside him and how integral it was for supporting Quinn on his own emotionally tumultuous journey.

I felt Lachlan had more to recover from than Quinn, and not that I'm downplaying how devastating a bad relationship can be, I'm still recovering from my own, but it seemed artificially inflated to support Quinn's bad habits and pointed sass that was borderline unkind more often than not. His own revelatory moment that came directly from Lachlan's admission of true desire for their life was a bright spark that quickly fizzled into something warm and right. It highlighted, yet again, how perceptive, honest, raw, and perfect Lachlan was.

So overall I was happily surprised with the content of the story and will absolutely be coming back for more from the brothers. I know who makes up one of the pairings and I cannot wait to see how they reconcile and resolve their major issues, the other two are a bit more of a mystery but I am so eager to find out who their matches are.
