3.5 HEARTS--9/11

Horrifying. Tragic. Devastating.

I won't rehash the events of that day. But it's an open wound on America.

Thirteen years and a few months later and I can still remember that day. Remember the following weeks, watching the despair from real life victims' family members and those on television. I can't even watch a movie about that day to this day. And I kind of psyched myself on reading this story to see if I could do it. I tried reading another romance that featured 9/11 events, a few years ago and couldn't do it.

Now years later and I tried a different romance by an author I'm familiar with...and I finished. I zoned out while reading a few flashbacks, couldn't help comparing to what I remember from that day. (I wasn't at Ground Zero, let's say 50 blocks away or so) My reaction to this story might be a little skewed compared to another reader. Can't believe I'm sharing so I'll leave it at that, please. :)

I found the story was typical Scarlet Blackwell - angst, heaving alpha men, a mishmash of a British America (seriously, Totally Bound - an American editor can help edit these Britishisms out of a book that is supposed to be based in America), a conflict that seems to be not easily resolved but a bridge is built by the end to seek an answer and a fitting ending. I don't think it was her best work. Good enough for what she set out to accomplish: a man grieving for his dead lover finds possible love in NYC ten years later at Ground Zero during the holidays.

Damon is ex-NYPD, living now in Montreal, away from the agony of losing his love, Justin that summer day on 9/11. Justin was a firefighter who died trying to save lives. Damon has been celibate for ten years, still a mess, refusing counseling and not dealing with his ghosts. On Christmas Eve, he meets another firefighter, Simon in a bar. And though he tries to avoid the man, fate keeps putting these two together.

Now I understand what the author was going here but I had to suspend my reality because I doubt these two would actually keep meeting each other so easily. Maybe it was the magic of Jizzmas that brought them together? And semen sorcery for those men being able to come so much. Maybe it could be said for a certain someone's ten year drought but I used my reality-suspension rubber band to believe that bit.

Damon's internal struggles with finding another man attractive was...good enough too. I like reading about love being found after loss, so it had the right ingredients - inner turmoil, self loathing, grief, guilt. Did I buy the entire story? *side eyes* Yeah, I guess it's alright.

The guys got together fairly quickly. A week actually, so you get some New Year's Eve action too. There was hot sex, rimming action, all night banging by muscular, tall guys who almost sounded American but not quite. Little phrases or actions didn't read New Yorker or American which again, an editor familiar with the country the book is based in would go a long way.

Overall, a sad and hot number. The author did research the events and included Ground Zero info. And she wrote romance and made something happy from that...wound.

Pretty decent read. I enjoyed the key elements of the romance. A little over dramatic at a few parts which this author is known for. Compared to some over the top antics I've read from her in the past, the antics in this book were muted. I enjoyed the ending the most. It ended with a beginning, a promise of more. I do hope those two find love from what feels like a hopeless place and maintain it. I'd say it's a tentative HEA with room for more.

Maybe I'll try to give that other romance a chance in the near future.

I read this one the day it came out, because it had the firefighter and cop angle, and remember enjoying it very much. Will probably re-read again soon.

Re-read November 2016

This short story is heartbreaking and there is a lot of anger in it. The sex was hot, but it felt a little wrong. You'll have to read it to know what I mean.

I dropped a star because the ending was incredibly unsatisfying. HFN and it desperately needs an epilogue or sequel.

Still, a firefighter and a cop. My crack.

WOW...what a powerful story and one that is so hard for me review.

It started out with quite a bit of angst...then it became sweet...and then whoa...violent but pretty damn hot sex.

So yea...a bit of everything thrown in there but at the end, I really loved both Damon and Simon. Both had been through toooo much and are forgiven for being jackasses once in a while.

For the past few times, I haven't been fully impressed with Scarlet Blackwell's stories. However, with 9/11, I think she reminds me why I like her writing.

The emotional grief that Damon experiences feels palpable which gives reason for him being a bit of jerk to Simon when they first meet (one of trademarks of Ms. Blackwell's stories is the jerks :p). He feels like betraying his relationship with Justin by feeling even a tiny speck of attraction to Simon (who, ironically, is also a firefighter). Except Simon also loses someone in 9/11 -- so he actually understands what Damon is going through. It makes Simon to be probably the right person who can lend out a hand and help Damon to move on.

There are several flashbacks ... which capture the time when both men found out that Tower Two collapsed and took their loved ones' lives. While it comes with HFN warning, I would like to believe that Damon and Simon will make it all right.

That`s Ms. Blackwell`s forte -
her characters are never simply black and white/good and evil but showing multiple shades of gray.
One of her better stories, the strong emotions made it believable and gripping...

4.5 stars. While this story might not have been perfectly written, I felt that the emotion was perfectly portrayed. I teared up and/or openly cried through 90% of it I think. Even the steamy moments were ripe with raw emotion. I could actually feel both of the MCs pain, fear and longing and for that Scarlet Blackwell deserves the highest props. I loved every minute of it.

Original Blog Post: eARC Review: Nine One One by Scarlet Blackwell

I could not help but be affected by Nine One One. I knew it had something to do with the shocking devastation that date is connected to but to actually read about how the survivors grieved and tried to move on, it was difficult.

Damon survived that day but his best friend, partner and lover did not. With one last kiss, he watched his lover disappear into Tower Two and never come out. He watched as others fell around him while he, he survived. His survival guilt was strong and he almost lost hope. His only recourse at that time was to run. And he did, off to Canada.

Ten years later, at the call of his mother, he finally comes home. However, his grief is like an unstoppable force coming at him stronger than ever, in this place where he lost his love. Seeking solace in his former lover's favorite bar, he meets Simon. For the first time in ten years, a seed of attraction warms but instead of making him glad, Damon fears.

Simon is an FDNY firefighter, he had lost friends and a brother on that fateful day ten years ago. After wallowing in survival guilt, he gets the help and moves on. And he does move on like a bee from flower to flower. He never finds the right one to be true to, not until one night he goes to a favorite bar and sees a beautiful but sad man sitting there. He could not resist, he just had to approach.

The connection between Simon and Damon is erotically sizzling but it is laced with so much tears and fear that it was hard to continue reading this at times. As I read this, I could not find a light at the end of the tunnel and I thought this was not going anywhere but a one night stand. Unexpectedly, an angel in disguise comes to the rescue and Damon reaches out to accept the help. This is the move that makes this story work. His willingness to build again, with Simon, it was beautifully written. How it was done, it will have to be read.

Another tale in the Sexy Snax series from Totally Bound. 3.5 stars from me, my problem being I just can't seem to find another Scarlet Blackwell story that lives up to Inferno, sighs.

Former NYPD cop Damon Summerfield returns to New York to spend Christmas with his family for the first time since his fire fighter lover Justin was killed in the 9/11 atrocity. Damon hasn't been able to stop mourning his lover, and flees to Canada to try and rebuild his shattered life, but 10 years on he's still consumed with grief and feels guilty that he survived and Justin died. On Christmas Eve, he visits one of Justin's favourite bars near to Ground Zero and is immediately attracted to a guy with bright green eyes and a hunky body, the first time since Justin's death that he has felt any attraction towards another guy. The spark is mutual, and Simon starts to chat him up. Damon disappears, and Simon has no way of contacting him.

Spending the Christmas holiday drunk and moping is no good for anyone, and Damon's mum and dad drag him along to a neighbour's New Years Eve party...just for a change of scenery. Guess who's there?? You've got it in one, and the guys seem to be on the same page this time...although that may have been the alcohol talking of course, hehe. Damon goes back to Simon's place and well, hot and steamy sex springs to mind...several times over. Damon has discovered that Simon is a fire fighter too, and of course his mind starts to play little tricks on him as he has also found out that Simon's brother Kit was a fireman in Justin's fire house and perished in the Twin Towers tragedy as well. The guys are still getting it on when they are interrupted by a knock on the door and Simon's f**k buddy appears...giving Damon the perfect excuse to bolt. Shallow is the least of what he flings at Simon as he departs. I'll leave you to discover whether Damon finally accepts that he needs help/counselling and whether he gets a well deserved HEA of his own.

I remember all too well 9/11. The shock of watching the second plane crashing, to the horror of the watching the bodies falling, the first tower to collapse followed by the second tower. Everyone lost someone that day or knew someone who lost someone.

This was a very well done story of survivors from that day. True, it's fiction, but I'm sure in real life there are survivors to this day that are still grieving. My heart goes out to them.
I would like to believe that something good could out of something so horrific.

I liked this story. It a bittersweet and lovely. The thing I appreciated the most about the story was that it wasn't Happily Ever After. Damon has things he has to work out, demons he has to face. The problems didn't magically melt away at the end; they are still there as real and scary as ever. I would really enjoy reading another story with Simon and Damon to how their relationship progressed..if they could make it, despite of all their baggage.

Def. worth a read...But be prepared for much angst and sadness.

Oh wow, what a gloomy setting. And such a despairing character. Well done in giving me a shudder throughout the story, Ms. Blackwell. I could almost feel the agony of the moments our two heroes had been through; their lost and anguish; not least during their heated passionate encounters.
Quite an upside down reading journey, this. Damon and Simon, my heart goes to you and others who suffer due to atrocity of 9/11. I'm glad for a ray of light at the end which gave hope to a promising future for these two.

This was emotionally hard written story. Damon was depressed sad character. Gosh was he behaving rude and ungrateful, even mean! But then grieving for a soul mate can make you act like an ass and be one, too. I'm glad Damon finally meet Simon, because with a possible new romance with Simon did Damon accept that he truly needed healing.

This was a hugely emotional book to read. The story of a firefighter and a cop, both personally and deeply impacted by the events of 9/11. There is some passionate and angry sex but this story is more focused on the emotional journey of Damon as he finally, 10 years after the event, reaches a point where he is ready to heal.

Review first written for Nautical Star Books. I received a copy of this book at no charge in exchange for my honest review.

Nine One One begins with a look at Damon’s pain over losing his partner Justin in the collapse of the Twin Towers. Justin was a firefighter and a perfect match for Damon, the cop. With his death, Damon has shut himself off from everyone emotionally and retreated to Canada. He has not been with anyone else emotionally or physically since Justin’s death. He comes home to New York to visit his parents but is just biding his time until he can go home to Canada and be alone again. He doesn’t count on a chance encounter with Simon at a local bar.

Damon hasn’t felt attraction to another man since Justin died and his reaction to Simon scares him. He is just beginning to consider giving in to desire when he learns that Simon is a firefighter. The mere idea of being with another fire fighter terrifies Damon and he abandons his plans. Fortunately, fate steps in and throws Simon in his path a few more times until he finally gives in to his libido and they hit the sheets. The results are nothing short of spectacular but circumstances leave Damon in tears. Simon and Damon have a few hurdles to overcome after that but they get their ‘happy for now’ by the end of the book.

I loved that the author wove bits of Justin and Damon’s relationship into the story and the details of some of the ‘flashbacks’ to September 11 are emotionally upsetting even to ME who did not have to live through that terror. Through those glimpses into the past, Ms. Blackwell weaves a very emotional story and half way through the book when Damon was crying in the bathroom I found myself crying right along with him. There were times I wanted to throttle both characters but was thrilled they managed to figure things out relatively quickly. The heat between Damon and Simon is off the charts even if it was filled with a little bit of sorrow and anger at times.

Nine One One shows us Damon’s emotional journey from losing someone he loves to finally grieving and moving past his loss to a new life. His and Simon’s relationship started out a bit rocky but Simon is determined to help Damon heal and learn to love again.

If you are looking for an emotionally and physically intense read, Nine One One is a great choice!

: Damon is still in morning after losing his long-time lover of 6 years to 9-11. Damon was a cop there and Justin was a fire fighter. Damon hasn’t been home since he left New York shortly after and his parents talked him into Christmas this year. He has lived like a monk all these years, but a handsome green eyed man gets his attention in Justin’s favourite bar on Christmas Eve.
Simon wanted Damon as soon as he saw him and didn’t give up. They keep running into each other the next few days. Could it be fate?

This story had so much premise and started of really good. My heart went out to Damon though ten years seems so long for a young man to go without wanting sex, but then again I preferred tis to the opposite and usual running to every man for one night stands. Then he met Simon.

I really wanted to like this story. I really did. The more I read the more I disliked Damon and then near the end the twist with Simon floored me and I liked him even less. I am not saying the story was bad. It’s not. It’s a good story about two men that lost a lot in 9-11. It just wasn’t for me. I will say I did like how we got the backstory of Justin and Damon and I would have loved to see that in a full story.

If you like lots of angst, firemen, cops and stories about the tragedy of 9-11 you may like this.

10 years after the tragic loss of his partner on 9/11, Damon has checked out of life and is just existing. Meeting Simon, a fellow survivor starts to shake up his world.
I wasnt sympathetic to Damon initially - I'm the type to run with a new reality, not hide in the rubble of the old (though I do know this happens to plenty of people).
Both men are suffering from survivors guilt and whilst Simon seems to cope better, he is still dealing.
Through Damon's memories we do get a lot of his and Justin's relationship.
Finally there is the big issue that breaks through Damon's shell and he seems to finally agree to get help, with Simon by his side

Reviewed by Brandilyn for Prism Book Alliance. Nine One One by Scarlett Blackwell is a poignant look at two men's attempts to move on after devastating loss. One has been in a holding pattern for ten years. One has been trying to fuck away is guilt over surviving when so many others, and specifically his brother, weren't as lucky. They happen to meet at Christmas time ten years after the 9/11 tragedy. They were both first responders that day and both lost people close to them when the South Tower fell. I really like this story. Both Damon and Simon are likeable characters. This is great read with not to much angst. It's a story about coming to terms with what happend at 9-11 and learning to let go of those memories and to love again.

To bad there wasn't an epilogue because i would love to read what happens to Damon and Simon next. Where will they be in let's say the next 5-10 years from now.

So i hope the author will give us a sequel because for me this story hasn't ended yet.

I recommend!

Beautiful story!
My heart ached for Damon and I wanted to scream at him to please give Simon a chance to help and I'm so happy Simon stuck around, despite Damon's stubbornness and even hostility. I cheered for both of them when Damon finally had found a courage to ask for Simon's help.

The ending is a HEA for me, I have no doubt these two man will found their way to happiness together :)
