John Creasey (September 17, 1908 - June 9, 1973) was born in Southfields, Surrey, England and died in New Hall, Bodenham, Salisbury Wiltshire, England. He was the seventh of nine children in a working class home. He became an English author of crime thrillers, published in excess of 600 books under 20+ different pseudonyms. He invented many famous characters who would appear in a whole series of novels. Probably the most famous of these is Gideon of Scotland Yard, the basis for the television program Gideon's Way but others include Department Z, Dr. Palfrey, The Toff, Inspector Roger West, and The Baron (which was also made into a television series). In 1962, Creasey won an Edgar Award for Best Novel, from the Mystery Writers of America, for Gideon's Fire, written under the pen name J. J. Marric. And in 1969 he was given the MWA's highest honor, the Grand Master Award.

Když už jsem se pustil do čtení, vzal jsem to komplet. A tedy, Sucho je z trojice Potopa/Sucho/Hlad nejméně zábavné. Je prostě sucho a umře většina lidí… ale těmi se moc nezabýváme, spíš se soustředíme na skupinu hrdinů, jak se prodírají pouští a snaží se najít zmizelého otce… a s ním i možná důvod, proč k tomu suchu došlo.
A mají žízeň.

Samozřejmě, i tady je Palfrey, šéf oddělení Z 5, a i tady máme romantický motiv.

Jak je to anglické, tak tady sice autor povraždí devadesát procent lidstva, ale moc se tím nezabývá – tragédie k hrdinům probleskují jen prostřednictvím občasných zpráv v rádiu. Palfrey tady přijde o manželku, což se dozvíme až v dalších dílů, prkotinami se autor neobtěžuje.

Ale naštěstí se všechno povede na poslední chvíli vyřešit tak bleskově, že pokud při čtení škytnete a přeskočíte řádek, tak vám to unikne.

I started reading this during the recent heatwave and drought, so it felt very pertinent, especially as the drought in this book is 'man' made through the radiation caused by nuclear testing. It's an incredibly gritty story and the front cover (of a man struggling with a woman) is designed to attract a particular reader, rather than reflecting anything really specific to the story. The tension mounts and, I'm not sure how much Dr Palfrey and his colleagues do to sort it out, rather than live through it!
