The Undead Chad has stormed his way into the heart of the Soul Society, the Seireitei, only to meet his match in the devastatingly efficient Captain Kyôraku. Meanwhile, Ichigo struggles in his battle against Kenpachi Zaraki, the captain of the 11th company. Although Ichigo succeeds in drawing blood, the secret of Kenpachi's zanpaku-tô may be his undoing. Before Ichigo realizes it, Kenpachi's blade has pierced his heart!

Ichigo... I hate rain. It rains in this world, too. When you're upset, the skies grow cloudy. When you're sad, it rains. I can't stand it. I wonder if you can grasp the terror of being rained on in this lonely world. To be able to held back the rain, I'll give everything I have. Should you place your trust in me, I won't let any rain fall on this world. [Zangetsu] - A TRULY ICONIC SPEECH
I want to start my review by admitting that despite watching the anime a couple of times already, I never realized the importance and the symbolism of the rain in Bleach, but I'm slowly getting there, I promise!
Anyways, after the events shown in Volume 12, while Ganju and Hanataro are trying to get to Rukia and save her, Ichigo finds himself in a truly unenviable situation. His opponent has an extreme amount of spiritual pressure and seems to be a truly crazy maniac who lives and breathes through battles and who cannot be cut. How to fight someone like this?
CALM DOWN! CALM DOWN, CALM DOWN, CALM DOWN...
I CAN WIN, I CAN WIN, I CAN WIN, I CAN WIN!!
NO! NO! NO! I DON'T WANT TO DIE! I DON'T WANT TO DIE! I DON'T WANT TO DIE!
Ichigo's emotional turmoil through the chapters is something that was shown in such a simple, but also incredibly effective way. The reader can feel his fear. Ichigo being completely lost in his panicked and terrified state, trying to stop his shaking hands and stop himself from running away is something all of us is getting through at some point. It's very hard to face our fears, but it's something all of us needs to do, if not for ourselves, then for the people we care for. Ichigo was always a person who fought for others. People he loves are the most important thing for him, he lives and dies for them. So no wonder that when he remembered that he's not alone in the Soul Society, that his friends are also fighting alongside him to save Rukia, he realized that he needs to stop running, because they all will die, if he doesn't.
"Can you hear it, Ichigo? The sound of his sword screaming?"
In this volume the true fight between Ichigo and Zaraki starts and ends. It's not only a fight between two incredibly powerful Soul Reapers, it's also a fight between two ways of handling a Zanpakuto. Ichigo's fighting alongside Zangetsu, while Zaraki, believing that teaming up with a Zanpakuto is unworthy of a warrior, refuses to let his sword to have anything to say during his fights. Both Soul Reapers are incredibly strong, but only one wins this fight.
I had neither name nor parents. I was from Kusajishi, the 79th district of Rukongai. The only color I remember was blood red. The people around me were most beast than human. Being a baby, I could easily have been stomped to the death. But then you came, Zaraki of the North Rukongai, district 80. You came of the depths of that dark abyss... and hacked apart my blood soaked world. And you gave me a name. If you hadn't shown up, I wouldn't be here now. [Yachiru]
The Kenpachi/Yachiru relationship is hands down one of the best ones from Bleach and in this volume we got the opportunity to see their shared backstory. They are each other's everything and you can totally feel it. I love how Yachiru is always glued to Zaraki's back, it's so cute. But don't think that she cannot be scary. While Zaraki does not look like a cinnamon roll and will kill you without a second thought, Yachiru looks like a cinnamon roll, but will kill you if you piss her off (but she's very, very cute most of the time). I really cherish her little scenes in this volume. She was so happy to see her best friend enjoy himself with Ichigo (okay, this sounds a little bit wrong, but you know what I mean!) and even thanked Ichigo for entertaining Zaraki. All three will be best buddies from now on! ;)
Oh, the end result of the Ichigo vs Zaraki fight is amazing. Who would have thought that Zaraki will want to change his strong believes and want to become even stronger than he is now? ;)
Some other things I NEED to talk about:
~ thank God (or, in this case, Tite Kubo, I guess) for Kyoraku's existence! We need a wise guy here! ~ Ichigo's devastated expression, after he realized what had happened to Chad, is much more impactful than the one shown in the anime 😔 ~ Kenpachi looks as maniacal in the manga as he looks in the anime 😆 ~ HISAGI GOT OFFICIALY INTRODUCED! But, surprise, surprise, in comparison to the other characters that looks better in the manga than in the anime, Hisagi's anime version wins for me! ~ having Komamura say that he hates battles and then make a cut to the Ichigo vs Zaraki scene shows the author's sense of humour and I love it 😂 ~SHIRO HAD SHOWN UP! YAAAAAAY! ~ do you imagine yourself wearing Kenpachi's eyepatch? Jesus 😨 ~ Rukia thinking that she's unworthy of the blood that is shared for her - GIRL, YOU DESERVE THE WORLD! ~ "I want to save Miss Rukia too, so I decided I'd do whatever I could, even if I got punished for it later. All I could do was stealing a key. I guess, I'm pretty useless." - HANATARO, BABY, STOP! YOU'RE PRECIOUS! ~ let's not forget to mention Mr Yasochika Iemura from the 3rd seat of the 4th company! I laughed so hard while reading his comments, the guy is hilarious without even trying! I'm so glad that he wasn't overlooked by the anime producers and his parts were actually shown!
Now that the Ichigo vs Zaraki fight is over, Ichigo lands in the care of Yoruichi, while Hanataro and Ganju, who were close to saving Rukia, finds themselves in the great danger - here comes Byakuya Kuchiki! I wonder what will happen next! ;)
To be honest, I seriously think that people really need to worry more about Kenpachi Zaraki as an enemy rather than Byakuya. His spiritual pressure is intimidating as it is, but also his irrationality of common sense is almost scary. If you are being cut down again and again, wouldn't that make you worried a bit for your life? Not Kenpachi Zaraki. Okay, I love the pairing between intimating Kenpachi and adorable, optimistic Yachiru. I don't ship it, (because that would ruin the meaning of true FRIENDSHIP, and turn it into 'relationship'), but I made it my OTP. ("One True Pairing.") I have to admit, I had to stop a couple times to draw a picture of Yachiru's adorable smile. :3 The new experience in Ichigo's inner world was quite interesting. Creepy, but also exciting. It was actually quite entertaining having Ichigo fight against himself, and I had hoped the fight would have been just a tad bit longer. I really really really REALLY want to find out by what he meant saying: "'Cause his power...... Will eventually be mine," sometime extremely soon. And I say SOON. It's kind of unfortunate that even after all that Ichigo went through, he still had to get cut up even more than he already was, just to get through one more person, (a very insane person might I add, but still.) I can't even imagine how much pain he must have endured so far, and I hope I never have to. I love how this volume had the character's rating reactions. That is much more entertaining than just hearing about the top 10 and then reading the rest off a list. Oddly enough, I agreed with the 10 ten ratings, except I'm a little surprised that Byakuya wasn't ranked higher. Oh well. Can't wait to keep reading!
A formidable battle-centered volume as Ichigo confronts Kenpachi in a deadly and horrifying exchange of willpower and killer instinct. Mangaka Tite Kubo deserves a lot of praise for the incredible artwork that went into illustrating Kenpachi's suffocating presence and Ichigo's determination. Loved the teasers to the evil within Ichigo as he closes in on Rukia's position.
We get the end of Ichigo vs. Kenpachi and oh wow was it wonderful. I also loved the stuff we got with Zangetsu, and I’m assuming that this stuff won’t be relevant at all or come back later in a big way. Not at alllllllll.
And the reveal at the end of the chapter about Ganju and Rukia has me so excited to keep plowing through this series!
This is the big battle between Ichigo and Kenpachi. Both hard headed, both strong, but who will come out on top?
This is a vicious, yet really fun fight. We get to see more of how their swords work, especially ichigo. I also enjoy this chapter because Kenpachi sidekick is freaking adorable. The art is solid throughout with some great memorable moments.
The stuff with Rukia starts to boil up and ends on a great cliffhanger.
Right? What happened in this volume eh? Kenpachi so automatic 5 🌟
Kenpachi and Ichigo fight, we learn that Kenpachi didn’t have or doesn’t know his name and that his assistant captain (Yachiru) was a baby he found alone in a battle. She wasn’t scared of him despite his violence and I guess he took her in. He’s basically her dad/ best friend. Kenpachi named himself and Yachiru. Both of them come from the worst districts much like Renji and Rukia. Kenpachi makes it clear that he doesn’t care what Ichigo does if he wins and he doesn’t care if Rukia escapes. Ichigo gets well and truly destroyed by Kenpachi who wears the eyepatch and bells in his hair to make fights more difficult for himself. Ichigo lets his guard down a little and Kenpachi stabs him in the chest. Ichigo literally cannot move and he see Zengatsu. Kenpachi has told him his sword doesn’t have a name and he earlier was happy as it meant that the sword didn’t have another form, but he realises he’s exactly the same as Kenpachi. He may know Zengatsu’s name but he hasn’t tried to get to know the sword or work together. He retreats into his mental/ soul world and Zengatsu tells him if he wants to use his power again he must take it from his hollow self. He fights his hollow self and during this realises how uninventive he’s been with his own weapon too, and just how much power Zengatsu has if they share it. He asks for another chance and is given it. Ichigo returns to the soul society and Hollow Ichigo tells Zengatsu to train him well as Ichigo’s power will be his eventually, implying the hollow form we saw earlier is another sentient entity within Ichigo.
Meanwhile, Chad has fought Kyoraku and been defeated but he stops Nanao from killing him. This is because during the fight word of Aizen’s murder has reached them, and she suspects he was involved. Kyoraku says that if that’s the case they need him alive to find out what happened.
He is sent to 4th to be healed.
Rangiku visits Momo in her cell and gives her a letter that Aizen left for her in his chambers. She tells her she should be grateful it was Toshiro who searched them first. No one else has read it according to Rangiku.
Momo reads it and realises this is Aizen telling her he is likely dead and it’s implied the letter tells who what he thought was going on with Rukia’s execution.
Ichigo comes back to where he lies dying and manages to get back up thanks to Zengatsu’s power being shares with him. His spiritual pressure increases massively and Kenpachi continues to fight him. This time he removes his eyepatch and it turns out 13th division made him an eyepatch that are spiritual energy so that he could have more fun fighting. Now his spiritual pressure is even greater. They pretty much destroy a bunch of buildings. During this a messenger arrives to inform Yachiru about Aizen and she tells him to go away.
Ichigo and Kenpachi stab one another at the same time and Ichigo apologises to Rukia. Kenpachi laughs because he knows that Ichigo won and collapses. Kenpachi tells Yachiru he wants to be stronger and seems to reconsider just using his Zanpakuto as a tool. Yachiru helps Kenpachi up and thanks Ichigo for ‘playing with Kenny’ and that she hasn’t seen him so happy in a long time, asking him to fight him again some time. She leaves with him and Ichigo is left alone.
Mr Yoruichi shows up and apologised for being late and says he will make sure to help Ichigo, telling him how well he’s done.
Ganju and Hanataro continue to try to make it to Rukia and successfully get inside the building by knocking the guards out. They show up and tell Rukia they’re here to save her. ganju sees her and recognises her as the person who brought back his dead brother and tries to attack her. Rukia apologises and tells him she did indeed have to kill his brother and she’s sorry and he can kill her if he wishes. Hanataro reminds Ganju they’re helping Ichigo. Unfortunately that’s when big boy Byakuya shows up…
There’s a small comic in the margins that details the third seat of 4 division complaining politely about everyone else in his journal and how they keep doing things that annoy him and don’t take him seriously.
Ichigo vs Kenpachi and the fight is epic as hell, and when it seems like he is down, he meets Zangetsu and their training commences and its wonderful and when he finally fights Ken at his full strength he shows him who the boss is and we get a short backstory of Kenpachi and Yachiru and its so emotional and romantic and like makes you love the character and just shows how awesome Ichigo is! Plus Byakuya next and interesting revelations between Ganjyu and Rukia! This volume was awesome and just continues the awesomeness that is bleach!
This book is great for those who likes action and humor. But this book is mainly focused on the battle. It has so many scenes, from 2 people battling other people to dying and choosing to revive. A man named Ichigo was on a "quest" to come rescue a girl. Though they thought that it was going to be easy, they had come across some enemies. Some enemies are easy and some can be deadly. Lastly, at the end of the book leaves a cliff hanger of 2 men who learned something one knew.
Bleach, Vol. 13 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eight chapters (108–115) of the on-going manga series.
After defeating Yasutora "Chad" Sado and deeming him not a bad person, Shunsui Kyōraku decides to have him incarcerated. Meanwhile, Ichigo Kurosaki is fighting against Kenpachi Zaraki, though terrified of his opponent's overwhelming power; Ichigo finds the resolve to face him. However, unlike other captains, Kenpachi reveals he has not mastered his zanpakutō and he easily defeats Ichigo.
At that time, Ichigo is brought into his inner world by Zangetsu to face another opponent: A hollow personification of Ichigo's that manifested from his training under Kisuke Urahara. As Ichigo realizes that he knows nothing about Zangetsu and promises to learn more about him, the fight is stopped and Ichigo returns to fight Kenpachi again. This time, he is able to use all the power from Zangetsu, and as a result Ichigo is able to successfully battle Kenpachi to a draw.
Kenpachi's lieutenant, Yachiru Kusajishi, takes him to another place and Kenpachi confesses that he lost because he has never been able to truly know his zanpakutō. Meanwhile, Ganju Shiba and Hanatarō Yamada find Rukia Kuchiki. It is then that Ganju becomes infuriated when he recognizes Rukia as the Soul Reaper who killed his brother Kaien Shiba.
This tankobon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. The incursion into the Seireitei to save Rukia Kuchiki continues as Yasutora "Chad" Sado loses his battle against Shunsui Kyōraku and placed in prison. Ichigo Kurosaki manages to fight Kenpachi Zaraki rather impressively. Things get further complicated when Ganju Shiba recognizes Rukia Kuchiki as the Soul Reaper that killed his brother, which threatens the rescue mission.
All in all, Bleach, Vol. 13 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
Okay, so the story is getting very strange. Again we see the advancement of the other characters, as they fight their way into the citadel to help with the rescue, but Ichigo's fight with the enemy captain is kind of crazy, until the reader remembers that this is taking place in a spiritual world, rather than the physical one, so the rules may be a tad different. Chad's opponent, on the other hand, is officially very weird.
" Every time we set aside our pride, we take a step closer to the Beast. Every time we kill an emotion, we take a step away from the beast."
This volume was one of the best I've read so far in this series. So many revelations, so much action and we get to see Ichigo really become one with his Zanpakutō. I'm really curious about the Other Ichigo 👀👀👀 and we're one step closer to saving Rukia. Can't wait for the next volume!
I am reading this volume for the 2nd time just now. I read these long ago in a time before I knew about Goodreads.
So, Ichigo gets another power up after he is murdered by Captain Kenny who seems to enjoy his job of killing those weaker than him way to much. The power up fight montage is a lot quicker than in the anime. This is some good quality old time manga.
Ending was great, the twist of rukia knowing one of the rescuers and him hating her, ichigo working to learn more about his sword to work better together, it was very good. Chad is definitely my favorite character.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I HAVE SPOKEN TOO SOON AND THEY BETTER NOT KILL OFF SWEET BABY CHAD!!! I was okay with them killing off that captain bc he really didn’t matter. BUT NOT CHAD
