In 2002 K'wan hit the scene with his debut novel Gangsta, under Triple Crown Publications. It was the first novel released by the budding house and would eventually become the building block for what is now a multimillion dollar company. What started as a therapeutic release went on to become a part of urban-lit history and an Essence bestseller, as well as drawing rave reviews overseas. After penning his second novel, Road Dawgz (2003), K'wan drew the attention of St. Martins press. The literary powerhouse quickly signed K'wan to a multi-book deal, the first of which being Street Dreams (2004). In 2008 he received the Black Author of the year award from Black Press Radio for the novella Blow. Since his insertion into the publishing world K'wan has been featured in Vibe, Pages, King, Felon, Big News, The Library Journal, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Press, Clutch and most notably Time Magazine, to name a few. He was also interviewed by MTV News for a feature on Hip-Hop fiction, and a guest on Power 105s morning show as well as NPR (national public radio). In addition to being an accomplished author, K'wan is also a motivational speaker, mentor to at risk children and the C.E.O of Black Dawn, Inc. K'wan currently resides in New Jersey where he is working on his next novel.
I have been a fan of K'wan for years however, I've strayed away from this book! I am not sure why though! I really loved the story however, I can say that this book has soooo many characters to keep up with it took me awhile to figure out who's who and how everyone intertwined. I noticed towards the end that most of the characters paths crossed though. Animal is a very disturbed individual. I am looking forward to reading his backstory to see how he ended up being so gruesome. I am going to go on to finish the series because it was very entertaining for it to have been so much going on.
The book was okay. The book spent a lot of time talking about other people and their random situations rather than talking about ANIMAL. Hello, I wanna know him lol. I was expecting a "feel bad for this killer" type of story and we got a few glimpses but there wasn't much. All this over his girl but we aint see none of them together (it felt like I jumped in reading book 2 lol) and a few paragraphs about how he got in this position. Like, I finished this book still wanting to know more about Tayshawn. There were alot of hints about interesting things but nothing in depth. The ending was cheap. Shai left him with that man after finally getting his hands on him?????????? He top dog and aint even see the job thru?? Okay lol. And that cliffhanger wasn't it for me. BUT I did like the scene of him and Ashanti out back of that club lol. That was cool. Will I continue this series? No lol.
I really like this author but this book was a hard read. It was just too many characters for my liking. I started it over twice because it was so many different moving parts. I do plan to finish the series but it’s definitely not my favorite.
I am now a huge K’wan fan! This book was great and was able to hold my attention even when I didn’t read daily. However, the book did have many characters that all got several chapters for each. I was able to follow the storyline easily. Eager to read Animal II!
THIS BOOK is everything that an Urban Lit Street book should be this is the Blue Print. THE MMC personality was so layered. The plot had so much depth and it very enjoyable to read.
