The battle was raging, the air hot with smoke, loud with rifle fire. Then the air turned dim with an eerie mist, and for Jason Tarkenton, captain in the Confederate cavalry, the true nightmare began. Vickie Knox was today's woman dressed like yesterday's, wearing Yankee garb to play a part. But playacting ended when a Reb stepped out of the mist and took her prisoner - for real. They never should have met, never should have battled - never should have loved. But something had gone wrong with time itself, weaving together past and present like torn threads of a tattered tapestry. Something had gone wrong, and in mending such shredded silk, their loves - and their lives - might be the final sacrifice. FictionDB

I have read and loved a lot of time travel romances. I have also read a lot of Heather Graham books and always enjoy them. This rendition of a time travel romance bordered on being downright silly. It must be a very early book by Heather Graham. It doesn't even come close to the caliber of her writing skills or tension as Ms. Graham displays in her Krewe of Hunter Series or any of the many murder or mystery romances she has written. Nor, does it exhibit any of the obvious research she normally painstakingly does in her books. I'm a Civil War nut and have over 200 books on the Battle of Gettysburg alone, along with numerous other Civil War history books. In many other of Ms. Graham's books where she uses the Civil War as a backdrop, her historical research shines. Yep, it has to be a very early book.

If anyone is reading this book, do not base your judgement of Heather Graham on this book. If you do, you are going to miss out on a lot of great books of hers.

What a lovely book! I started this a few hours ago and couldn't put it down. I always love to read a time-travel and the romance is lovely between Vickie and Jason. So I thought the love scene came a bit early on, but I must not be in a picky mood so I won't quibble about it. I really didn't know what the outcome was going to be exactly, except the typical HEA, so that kept me turning the pages. The epilogue left me with a silly grin on my face and I'm so glad the author included that. All in all, it was a wonderful book to pass the time.

I read this one years ago and loved it then. I decided, since it was recently re-released (in the last year) I needed to read it again. So I did. I still love the book even though the pop culture references, as few as they are, sure make it obvious this book was written in the 90s! But it stands the test of time, literally and figuratively, as a wonderful time travel romance. It just reminded me why I've been a long time fan of Heather Graham and why she is an autobuy for me.

Vickie Knox is participating in a Civil War reenactment when a Rebel soldier appears. This guy isn’t play-acting, however. He’s the real deal who has stepped through a portal in time. As she shows him the modern wonders of Virginia, she develops feelings for the stalwart officer who insists upon returning to his era to save his injured brother. Can she help him get back even when she wants him to stay? A quick, escapist read.

Love throughout time

What an amazing story. Can love survive time? Can love defy time and space? Can love last forever? Such is the story of The Last Cavalier. It makes one hope and dream and wish- that love can last forever.

I love time travel and Civil War books, so I was excited to read this. Unfortunately, this book didn't live up to my expectations and I don't want to read anything else by this author.

Heat Factor: There is sex. Details are included.

Character Chemistry: She thinks he is a madman. He thinks she is a spy / prostitute. If this isn’t true love, I don’t know what is!

Plot: They go back and forth through a scary time portal.

Overall: This is some Confederate Apologist Nonsense.

I figured that this book would be ridiculous, because it’s a time travel romance. But I was not prepared for the level of nonsense that these characters spout. Here, for example, is Vickie, a 20th century woman, reassuring Jason, a Confederate Cavalry Officer, that the Civil War was not fought in vain, and that reenactments are awesome:

“No! No, it’s much, much more than a game! Don’t you see that? It’s history. It’s remembering, it’s keeping the heartache and the pain alive. It’s a way of honoring all that happened then. You shouldn’t be angry. You should be grateful. No man who fought died in vain. Not Yanks, not Rebels. You tested our nation. You broke it apart. You fought and died, and in the end, over time, you made it whole, you made it strong. What happened probably had to happen so that we could meet the twentieth century with the strength needed to survive, to arise a world power.”

I am not the historian of our bunch, and I am certainly not a Civil War reenactor, but this feels wrong. Yes, the Civil War broke the nation apart, and yes, tons of people continue to argue the details of battles and reenact them, but I don’t know that the Civil War is what made the United States strong and powerful enough to dominate the 20th century. (Or if it did, that was a good thing, but I guess this was written close enough to the end of the Cold War that world domination over Godless Communism was still a net positive.)

And in general, the main contemporary characters – Vickie and her grandfather – show a huge amount of sympathy to the Confederacy and pride in their Southern heritage. Again, this probably tracks, but I don’t really find it sympathetic in a romantic heroine.

Anyways, the basic plot is that a time portal opens that connects some battle during the Civil War with a specific reenactment of that battle in the 1990s – the days of the week and the weather match up perfectly, so there’s some kind of time warp. Jason ends up going through it, and stumbles upon Vickie, conveniently wearing period garb while visiting the reenactor encampment. They have sex literally twelve hours after they meet because it’s true love, even though during those twelve hours he has kidnapped her and is convinced that she’ll rat him out to the dirty Yanks.

Vickie teaches Jason about the 20th century, and have I mentioned that it’s true love! She tries to convince him to stay, but he can’t because he has to save his brother and his honor. There is a completely stupid interlude in a hospital during which Jason calls his African American doctor a “darkie” (ok, probably accurate, but really? Why include this if you’re not actually going to deal with race or slavery in any meaningful way) and is a jerk to a nurse for no reason.

But he has to go back! But then Vickie follows him to say goodbye and they have some more stupid adventures where she’s caught by some Evil Yankees. There is some more back and forth through the Time Portal of DOOM and finally Vickie decides to go back to the past with Jason, where they will live happily ever after in a land of no penicillin. Not to mention that they’ll be living on a plantation in the Reconstruction-era South (granted, Virginia, but still) which seems like a TERRIBLE life choice. But it’s ok, because in the 1990s there is AIDS, which cancels out the no penicillin.

Also, according to this book’s logic, it doesn’t matter when you are, as long as you’re with the Right Person and have Love, which sounds nice on paper, but I don’t think it works like that in practice. (At least Diana Gabaldon is honest about the struggles Claire faces as a 20th century woman who ends up in the 18th century.)

Honestly, I maybe could have overlooked the terrible life choice of living in the past if Vickie and Jason had more believable chemistry. They claim that they’re in love a LOT, and have some steamy sex scenes (Jason is baffled by bras and zippers! Humor!), but they show their chemistry through that fake banter fighting thing that some authors do and I do not dig it. Like, there’s a scene where Jason promises to follow Vickie’s lead so that he won’t get tossed in a loony bin, and then immediately turns on his Southern Gentleman Honor and doesn’t follow her lead at all. And she hisses at him angrily. And this is supposed to be lovable.

It’s all cool though, because he protects her and she likes it. Therefore, after knowing each other for 24 hours, they decide that time and space are irrelevant, and they are Meant To Be. I wonder what their relationship is like when Vickie is knee deep in diapers without a washing machine, and Jason realizes that his wife has never cooked without a microwave, never mind on a stove that needs a fire in it.

A truly heartwarming paranormal romance!

Heather Graham is a phenomenal author! She never disappoints! This was a fantastic and fascinating romantic story. It grabbed me from the beginning and I just couldn't put it down. Lost a lot of sleep with this one. But I know when I start one of her books that's bound to happen. I loved the storyline and the characters. The Civil War is one of my most favorite eras to read about, but I do love history.

They say fiction is about being willing to suspend disbelief, and boy, you sure need to do this for this story! Not only is there the time travel element, but the instant relationship that is worth leaving everything for. I understand instant attraction, but not falling right into bed together, let alone giving up your life to go another time forever.

Awesome read! Graham’s book takes place in the 1990s and in 1862. I enjoyed the book, but there were times I had to force myself to read it (mainly toward the middle).

Review posted @ VINTAGE GOTHIC ROMANCE on Tumblr:

THE LAST CAVALIER was the debut book in Silhouette's Shadows series, which ran from 1993 to 1996. The series was billed as stories "from the dark side of love" (e.g., Gothics, paranormal romances). Some of the books were reprinted later in the Dreamscapes series.

THE LAST CAVALIER was an interesting twist on time-travel romances. This one takes place on Blackfield's Mountain in Virginia. In 1862, a Civil War battle is raging on the mountain, and on that same date and location in 1993, a battle reenactment is taking place.

By some twist of fate, a portal opens which brings Jason Tarkenton, a colonel in the Confederate army, into "present day." He assumes the reenactment is the actual battle, and thinks participant Vickie Knox is a spy for the North. Jason kidnaps Vickie to keep her from turning him over to the Yanks.

Of course, Vickie thinks Jason is a madman who's taking the battle reenactment way too seriously. And Jason doesn't believe he's been transported to 1993. As they work to convince each other their own story is true, sparks fly between them.

For the most part, I liked this book. It was interesting to see Jason's reaction to Vickie's modern world. In addition to the developing romance, there was a side story of Jason trying to return to 1862 to save his wounded brother. I thought it was cool how he went about it.

As far as the characters go, I'd say I loved Jason and Vickie's grandfather "Gramps," but unfortunately Vickie herself fell a little flat. She was also a bit annoying at times, but Jason made up for it. They did seem well suited for each other in the end, and I loved how their story concluded.

Years ago I read every Heather Graham book I could find but then the love slowly faded away until it had been years since I've read one of her books. Then when this one came up at either a reduced price or or free, can't remember which I thought I would see if the magic was still there.

It's not.

Not even a drop. This is a time travel and since I've been reading and enjoying them I had hopes this would work. It started off well. Victoria, a young widow, is helping out at a reenactment of a Civil War battle in Virginia. Her dear Gramps is an authority on the war. Jason, a widower is in the midst of the real battle, when his brother is injured and Jason tries to find help. He runs into this really strange storm and when it's over, we, the readers, know he's come forward to the present, but Jason doesn't. He runs into Victoria and, thinking she's a spy. She thinks he's just REALLY getting into this reenactment.. He fiinaly believes her when he sees evidence and they bang like bunnies. They are IN LOVE. Within a day. Give me a freakin' break. They are not in love, at best they are in lust. The prose is very purely and most annoying. She's TSTL and he of course is a manly man. He must go back to save his brother. But no, he can't, he loves Victoria. Bust he must go back. He also saves the life of General Lee. But he's in love. No, he must go back.

So he goes back and of course Vicky follows. Love don't you know. Now she gets captured as a Yankee spy and Jason must come to her rescue.

For me, the book was overwrought mellow drama, exploding with purple. I see others have given this much higher stars than I have, but alas Ms. Graham and I have broken up for good.

This was really a good book! It actually surprised me, even though it's by one of my favorite authors, for some reason I didn't think I was going to like it. This is my first romance I've read about the Civil War, and I really enjoyed it! I'm going to have to check out the other Civil War stories that Heather Graham/Shannon Drake have written!

First of all, I have to start off by saying that the time travel in this book is a bit of a stretch (but hey, when does time travel make sense in a romance novel anyway)? Second of all, while I love and study history as a hobby the Civil War is not one of my favorite periods of time in history. But, Ms. Graham does an excellent job!

The hero, Jason Tarkenton, a Colonel for the Confederate army, stumbles into 1993 to finds our heroine, Vickie Knox, dressed up in an appropriate period-style dress (which she wore for a reenactment). Of course Jason is convinced that Vickie is for the Union. However, they are instantly drawn to each other, and the chemistry between them is electric! The pair have to work hard in this novel to earn their HEA! Brought tears to my eyes at the end! If you are a Heather Graham/Shannon Drake fan then this is for you, whether you like Civil War romance stories or not!

Okay—I could not put this book down!! I was riveted by the premise, the way the story played out, and the suspense. Not that the book was perfect—there were a few things that irritated me, but I was addicted to the story anyway and eager to see how it would all play out.

The romance in the book was extremely insta, but I could see why it needed to be that way, given the urgent nature of the plot. And, I did really like the characters and thought they had some great chemistry and seemed to have a lot in common, despite the time period differences, so I tried to overlook the super-speed of the relationship.

I liked the grandfather, too, and the setting of the story, with the Civil War actual and reenactment as the backdrop. I also loved that I had NO idea how this story would end! And the twists and turns at the end had me on the edge of my seat. It was a really entertaining read!!

Be warned that this book does have quite a few sex scenes—detailed, but not extremely explicit. There’s also some attempted assault, some mild swearing (none of the language is really strong or vulgar), and some bloody war/battle violence.

This is actually a several year old re-read for me. I remember loving it when I was younger, and this re-read was still an enjoyable read, though not as good as I remembered. It seemed shorter than I remember, but that could also be that I read faster than I used to!

The time traveling phenomenon is never fully explained and I found it mildly confusing, especially with all of the time jumping that happened in the book. The characters were very realistic, though in my opinion, they jumped to the sexual aspect of a relationship too quickly. I found the character of Gramps to be quite entertaining!

While this was a short read, we do get a full story, and even find out what happened in the Happily Ever After for the two main characters. I would recommend it for anyone that enjoys a Civil War era set story, or enjoys a time travel story, though I would also include a recommendation for Flashback if I was recommending it for a time travel story.

This is the first book in Harlequin's 1990's Shadows series, which is the reason read it. I don't know if it is just the sexual politics, but for me it was infuriating. The heroine doesn't seem to have a job (if any was mentioned at the beginning, it was so irrelevant that I forgot it in the three days it took me to read the book). Apparently two days with a man are sufficient for her to throw away her life in the 20th Century to move to the middle of the Civil War knowing there won't be a way back. And her grandfather pushes her to do it! He is also very happy when he find out that she ended up having five kids without disposable diapers, as we are reminded several times. Other than that, the situations are predictable and typical adventure/romance stock. nothing to compare to the 21st Century paranormal I enjoy. I guess it was interesting as a historical piece.

This is a reread for me. I really enjoyed it the first and second time reading it. Heather Graham is a long time favorite author of mine. I have been reading her books for decades. (Egads!) Although I really enjoyed the story, it was not quite up to par what I have grown use to from Heather Graham. Though there were a few sexy times in the book, there were just as many eye roll worthy euphemisms.
Which gave it a bit of a overly dramatic flare. That and maybe to many adjectives? I don't know. I liked it but again it seemed a maybe like it might be one of Ms. Graham's earlier work, though I am not sure.

This gets 3.3 stars because the plot wasn't bad. But I swear by the end of the book I was ready to strangle Vickie myself. Make a decision and stand by it already, geez. I did like the characters of Gramps and Jason, and honestly Vickie wasn't a back character. Her indecisiveness was a HUGE turn off for me....it almost seemed she had a touch of "I'm the only one who can take care of Gramps" itus. But I read it very quickly and the love scenes were very nice.

Very nice Time Travel Romance. And its not about Highlanders :). Not that I mind them by any means. But it is nice to have a different locale for a change. Civil War colonel in the middle of a battle, time travels to the battle in an reenactment in present time. Well, 1990's that is. :)

Short and fast read, sweet love story. Made me smile and sigh. A mighty fine hero that Jason.

And now I'd like to find some more romances based in the civil war era.

Why has it taken me SO LONG to read a Heather Graham novel? I love the time travel setting combined with the Civil War history. Add a sexy, noble hero and a heroine that I never got tired of (a rarity, in my book) and this one was a win all around. Definitely for the keeper shelf!

Fantastic time travel reading

I love history and especially the Civil War. Heather Graham did a fantastic job in capturing the facts and the nuances of the time period and the re-enactments. She wrote the characters richly and with feelings that were very real. Thank you!!
