Courts of the Star Fae Realms #1

King of Storms and Feathers

Rate this book
I wake in a cage at the gilt market with no memory of my name.

When the fae King of Storms and Feathers purchases me, I vow to escape his palace of dust and gold, reclaim my memories, and return to the home that haunts my visions—a city of ruins in the decaying forests of the human realm.

In the meantime, I’ll pretend to be what King Arrowyn wants—an obedient green-eyed bird, chained and powerless, his for the taunting and taking.

But when I escape and fall into viler clutches, Arrow hunts me down, determined to retrieve his disobedient, most valued possession.

The King of Storms and Feathers is the first book in the sizzling adult fantasy romance series, Courts of the Star Fae Realms. Readers who enjoy angsty enemies-to-lovers tension, a strong human heroine, and a morally gray fae king who yearns to control her but, instead, falls helplessly under her spell will love this book!

I don’t know how to feel. In terms of fantasy world building, I think there are a lot of good plot lines that could be discovered, and some of it was entertaining to read.

In terms of Leaf and Arrow…how THE FUCK am I supposed to like them as a couple when he literally only views her as his slave and his possession. And it’s not in a dark romance “oh you’re mine you belong to me” kinda way, it’s a sick in the head way. Slaves cannot give consent, which just made all of the sex they had feel icky. Leaf even said how much she hated him when she ran away at the end, but oh…he saves her from her crazy brother and she’s fine with the slavery???? Be for real. He apologized like once and you can tell he barely meant it.

Not to mention the ending. Arrow having her arrested??? For what?? Everything she did to him as a slave??? Running away??? It makes no sense and idk how the author is going to write a second book about them. Nothing Arrow did can be justified. He’s not a good person, and he’s not even a good King. Everything about him screams whiny, arrogant, toxic asshole who, let’s not forget, BOUGHT HER AS A SLAVE.

There’s not a small part of me that likes Arrow or wants him to be with Leaf. Leaf deserves to be a bad bitch queen and never be imprisoned again. Fuck Arrow.

This book isn’t a bully romance. This is a slave x slave owner romance and I honestly can’t even believe I read the whole thing.

After more than 400 pages, we're almost back to square one... 🥲 And now I'm supposed to wait until June to find out that the Sun Realm is ruining everything? I can't keep going like this 😮‍💨

This was hilariously bad. Like, a funny-bad, not angry-bad. Everything was so overt that i was at the same time laughing at how it didn’t even try, while deluding myself saying "you know what? Maybe it IS intentionally playing into litterally all the stereotypes at once, maybe it's gonna end up different by subverting your expectations, yeah, it's a bit too stupid but it could be fun to have a cautionary tale about the dangers of allmigthy fae royals whisking away fair maidens, or something" and to be honest all the set ups were there. Arrow didn’t really give a shit about her as a person, up until the end. And sure, unreliable narrator and all that, BUT he wasn’t an unreliable narrator in anything else so it could have been straight up true. Once the cartoonishly evil brother is introduced it was clear someone actually thought that playing it straight was a good move. Which makes me think landing a spot in a publishing company must be the easiest shit ever

Anyway, the world was almost interesting with all the realms having to rely on each other for something they produced (the main realm needs the gold, which needs to be produced by the gold reavers, who need the raven's feathers, who need the lightning, then you need humans to work on the mines and so on). Calling it convenient would be bad faith, as it's like saying "how convenient it is that bees are attracted to bright colors, and it just so happened that flowers, who need the bees to pollinate, just so happen to have bright colors", it's clearly the work of trial and error spontaneous process of which we only see the outcome. However the story doesn't really give a shit about it and Arrow can pretty much do whatever he wants, so no points there. The gold addiction thingy is creepy for the first few chapters and then is promptly swept under the rug. The ravens are made to seem this huge thing and they never come up.

As far as the Plot goes, there really isn't one up until Leaf/Zali runs away. Up until then it was a random recollection of single instances of "things" happening, with no bearing on the plot or cause and effect, like the random time the "Rust king" was about to SA her and Arrow stepped in to save her, or the random time the blue haired guard was about to murder her and then nothing came of it (sure Arrow threatened her, but that was it, no resolution), curiously Leaf/Zali is shown to be extremely incompetent at all times, getting captured over and over by essentially everyone, it's curious because she's said to be a badass. As the plot "begins" 80% through, everything about the Earth realm is just thrown at the reader's face and then resolved in the fastest fashion possible, with everyone acting out of character for no reason (why didn't Arrow just murder everyone in the throne room the first time he walks in? He's got his magic feathers that can kill everyone right? Just kill the king and the guards there, he's shown many times to not give a single shit about consequences). Anyway the "plan" to kill Quin is stupidly simple and incredibly inefficient, but it somehow works exactly as intended, no twists, no thinking on your feet. Nothing. Of course the population just cheers in the background ane Queen Zali is able to restore the kingdom in three weeks

“Everything is progressing well in Mydorian, is it not?”
“Indeed. Our people’s stomachs are full, and they wear smiles again, instead of grimaces of fear.”

How? Don’t ask. This is how it's obvious the evil Sun kingdom is doing a silly and of course it won't turn out to be an actual betrayal at the end. It's probably a way to reset the power imbalance dynamic of this book, i guess the author really likes to be the captive princess.

Wait a minute, the author? Come on, that's too harsh, just because one writes a character to be a certain way it doesnt mean the author is inserting themselves into the character. Well....

Leaf/Zali is a textbook definition of self insert Mary Sue character, she checks litterally all the boxes:

Wikipedia search for Mary Sue: A Mary Sue is a character archetype in fiction, usually a young woman, who is often portrayed as inexplicably competent across all domains, gifted with unique talents or powers, liked or respected by most other characters, unrealistically free of weaknesses, extremely attractive, innately virtuous, and generally lacking meaningful character flaws.[1][2][3][4] Usually female and almost always the main character, a Mary Sue is often an author's idealized self-insertion, and may serve as a form of wish fulfillment.

So: inexplicable skills, unique powers, liked by everyone, no flaws or weaknesses and attractive huh?

Well, for her skills, sure she gets beaten quite a lot, BUT that's because she doesn't have her memories, when she gets them back, she's able to kill in single combat her drugged up and fire magic powered brother despite not having fought in months at least (and she was always the more powerful when she was young)

“Perhaps I grew tired of watching you win all the time. And was bored stupid by everyone talking about how special you were. The golden child that was blessed with everything—natural fighting skills, the apple of our parents’ eyes, beloved daughter of our people"

So that's "skills". For "unique powers" we got of course the super secret family magic that only works for women.

For "universally liked" i mean...

"You cared too much about fixing everything that was wrong with our realm—the gold trade, the slaves, and the addicts. You would have fought to make things right with your last breath.

This is supposed to be the bad guy who hates her. Of course Ildri and Ari are willing to sacrifice themselves because they like her and the slave girl that gets killed because we needed to cut ties with the gold addiction thingy likes her because...??? Despite Leaf having achieved a coveted position by no merit of her own.

Wanna talk about flaws and weaknesses?

I cried for what we had once been—brother and sister, twin hearts, rambling through the forest for days on end, so happy that if we had died jumping off those cliffs into the river, we would have been at peace with our lives ending then. Because we were together.

She says this, after savagely stabbing this guy multiple times by the way. But that's beside the point, this was the same guy who was lost to her after ONE discussion

he was nothing but a murderer. A thief. And an unrepentant drug addict who had killed his own parents. A lost cause, who I wouldn’t waste a single tear over.

But of course she goes to him and cries him to his death. Yeah the 'flaw' of being too nice. Some angel type shit. Anyway the most you could call a "flaw" is her being brash, which only makes her more attractive to Arrow and never gets her into trouble (like, trouble with actual consequences) so it doesn't count.

Talking about being attractive, she has a gap in her teeth, so bingo, she's NOT a Mary Sue, checkmate stupid reviewer, she's not attractive. Well....

He rubbed the gap in my front teeth, seemingly fascinated by it. “Fae don’t possess such curious imperfections,” he mused.

He likes it. So once again it doesn't count.

As far as i can count, she scores convincingly in ALL the categories. So I CAN say she is indeed a self insert. I don’t think I need to explain why such a character is bad for a non comedy.

On her being "betrayed" at the end

“It will be fine. I’ll go alone, cloaked, and sneak into Coridon with ease. Don’t look so worried. I know you’ll take good care of everything while I’m gone. I'm bored and need an adventure."

I don’t think i've ever read less responsible words out of any person in any position of authority ever. And no, the story doesn't acknowledge this as a flaw.

Arrow was exactly what everyone thought he would be, to the point i cannot be bothered to summarize all the ways he's the "dark and tormented fae prince" stereotype that you're honestly in bad faith if you argue otherwise (not saying one's not allowed to ENJOY said stereotype, just that he obviously fits) thought he's a bit more a villain than usual, in how he's obsessed with absolute control over Leaf, that said he relents said control quite easily as soon as Leaf opens up to him, so... Could have had so much more bite to him instead of worshipping the goddness like all the others. That said (and this does not excuse his behavior in any way) you gotta feel bad for him, litterally every one of his friends betrays him, with the exception of Raiden's father, who has one scene with dialogue in the whole book. It got to the point it was quite hilarious, since he never did anything beside scaring any of them. There's also THIS said about him

a man who could transform in the blink of an eye from an empathetic and reasonable person to one capable of monstrous deeds.

I don’t know where this is coming from, he never was empathetic to anyone.

Van is an absolute chad, dude has been starved in a cell for months, his sister believed lost and brother turned evil, then she's back but imprisoned, first time he's out in the sunlight he's spitting line after line, charming the entire crowd

I couldnt care less about any other character. Quin was cartoonishly evil. The Sayeeda semed an interesting political schemer at the beginning, but then it turns out she's just doing it for Leaf's sake so... The others are pretty much there to bounce off of the main duo, they make courageous decisions and then cower in fear at their consequences, they make jokes with the mains, then they're scared or antagonize them with no connective tissue. Usually the role Raiden covers would be the character with the most life to him in the whole story, but this one even sapped the fun out of that character. Blue hair guard was the stand-in for the highschool bully.

If I have one praise for this book is that it reached the absolute peak of overt exposition, there litterally is no way to top this absolute gem

It was a weakness, a terrible character flaw.

“Resorting to brute force to get what you want is a character flaw"

Litterally definition of the writing concept, written on page. Akin to a character being introduced midway and saying "Ok, tell me the plot of this story so far"

I adjusted my leathers, willing my body’s urges into a comatose state, which was basically how they’d been since my family’s death three years’ ago, almost non-existent.

Bhahahahah holy shit the transition

Also, the dialogue, the fucking dialogue:

"I didn’t care whether I was a king, a jinn, or even a gold-damned fucking human."

Gold.....damned. I don’t even know what to say

“Love?” I spat the word out like it was bitter poison. “That emotion is for children who’ve never woken from nightmares with no one to wipe their tears. I am a man grown, raised in the shadow of violence and death, who has brought more of the same to the realm that I rule. Love shrinks from my being and will never exist within the bounds of my soul. I love nothing and no one, my little Leaf, least of all the things that belong to me.”

Hey 15 y/o little brother who's not come out of his room the entire weekend, can you write me a cool line to show my character is heartless and badass?

Hey, slides nicely into the Themes:

“Thanks to you, I now know that families aren’t formed by accidents of birth. They’re forged by continual acts of kindness, loyalty, and compassion.”

“If you find someone who’ll hold you when you’re at your worst, who’ll make you laugh so hard that your tears of pain turn to joy, then they’re your family."

“You’ve taught me that caring for someone is worth the pain and risk of possibly losing them. And that to love someone isn’t a weakness but an act of bravery, for which the rewards are endless.”

HEY GUYS, AUTHOR HERE, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU NOTICED BUT THIS STORY HAS A MESSAGE BEHIND IT (beside my barely disguised kinks)

This book definitely became a page turner and quickly. I decided to try and go with a new genre in which I typically do not read. I was quicky wrapped into the story line and loved the strong female mc. I went into reading this not knowing this was a trilogy but with how this book left off I'm excited to read the next one. Out of all the suspenseful endings I've read this one was probably my favorite. I was equally interested in both main characters. The plot being as good as their love story wrapped me in completely. Spice level 3/5.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book sucked me in from the very beginning and I absolutely devoured it!!

"𝙃𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙮, 𝙫𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚?"

This is an enemies-to-lovers, dark fantasy with a true morally grey MMC. The book starts out with Leaf, our FMC, being purchased at a slave market by MMC, King Arrowyn. Leaf has no memory of how she got there or her past, but she vows to escape and return to a home she dreams of.

This book will keep you guessing with all the twists and turns! Tension and banter between the MC's was great and the plot/spice ratio was perfect for me.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one, especially after that CLIFFHANGER!! 😤

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆:
🪶 morally grey fae king
🪶 strong human heroine
🪶 enemies-to-lovers
🪶 forced proximity
🪶 bully/captive romance
🪶 touch her and die
🪶 dual pov

⚠️ TW: attempted (g)rape (not by MC), dub-con (power imbalance & manipulation), discussion of death of MC’s family, amnesia trope, captive/owner romance dynamic, a fantasy realm with slavery, addiction to gold serum, strong language, and violence

king of storms and feathers - 3.5 stars EDITED TO 1 STAR ; july 11th 3:17pm

edit - july 17th 2023
okay , when i first wrote this review , despite having more problems with it i was very grateful towards the author for the arc and i decided to leave a kind review - especially since it was my first ever arc . however , as of recently , i found out that the author blocked me on my booktok account , most likely for leaving a poor review , and decided - fuck it !! this book was a PAIN to get through and if i'm being fully honest i spaced out for a majority of it because it was that bad . not only that , but when i signed up for an arc of this book it's because i was under the impression that this was a grumpy-sunshine , enemies to lovers book with a sprinkle of dark romance . what i did NOT know was that this was slave x slave owner and in no way do i find that okay at all , especially if the author did not experience that nor had family members who experienced that as it is NOT HER STORY TO TELL . the grumpy mmc that you "learn to love" ??? piece of shit who treated the fmc with zero to no respect whatsoever constantly treated her like property and must i remind you that she is quite literally his slave ??? as another review said ,, there is no such thing as consensual sex between a slave and slave owner . i've changed my previous rating of 3 stars to 1 star . using slavery as a romantic trope in your book ?? romanticizing slavery at all ?? it's honestly sick to me . slavery is not something to be taken lightly and should not me misconstrued to seem cute or sweet or romantic , even in a "bully romance" or "dark romance" . this isn't a bully romance , it's taking the voices of those who endured slavery and completely smashing them into pieces in order to create a "romantic" plot and trope for the main character and love interest . those are my 2 cents . you do not have to agree with it , and i wish i spoke out about this sooner instead of leaving a biased review out of gratitude about the arc , but after processing it for a few days and seeing how the author blocked me on my socials for leaving an HONEST review ? i realized that if no one else will speak out about this , then someone has to and i will be that person if necessary . thank you for reading .

ORIGINAL REVIEW FROM JULY 11TH BELOW

i received an arc for this book from the author in return for an honest review . i really appreciate receiving an arc for this book — thank you juno heart and your team for the opportunity !!

now on to the review ,, this wasn’t my typical read and very out of my “comfort zone” when it comes to what i read , so i think that definitely had a hand in my final rating of this book . i did enjoy the book , but i wasn’t really able to *click* with it until the very last chapter — i think i have a thing for cliffhangers !!! i also think that i was expecting for arrow to be ??? different ???? even though this was an ENEMIES to lovers 😭 (i like my cute interactions okay.)

one thing that i thought about a lot was that very early on in the book the main character , leaf , was assaulted and when i first read that part it felt like it was swept under the rug . it was resolved later but for a while that part would not leave my mind and i kept wishing it was resolved earlier . she also proceeded to be assaulted yet AGAIN just a few chapters later , which i know that was in the trigger warnings and it didn’t trigger me , i was mostly just shocked it happened so often (it didn’t happen just twice y’all.)

all in all i think i might just leave it here with this series , though i do wish the best of luck for the author and once again thank you so much for the arc !!

"King of Storms and Feathers is a gripping fantasy that drew me in from the start. With the FMC (Leaf) waking up in a cage with no memory, the story unfolds as she vows to escape the fae King of Storms and Feathers' palace. The tension between Leaf and King Arrow keeps you hooked, and Leaf's resilience adds depth to the narrative.

The plot and characters are well-crafted, delivering an angsty enemies-to-lovers dynamic. Despite the warning of hating King Arrow, I found the characters compelling, and the darker themes added complexity.

This is not a fluffy romance but a compelling exploration of fantasy with a touch of darkness. For those who enjoy steamy adult fantasy with strong heroines and morally ambiguous fae royalty, King of Storms and Feathers is a captivating read that I thoroughly enjoyed."

I was a bit slow making my way through this story, but largely that was because initially I was enjoying it so much and I really wanted to absorb every detail.

While the synopsis claims "you're going to hate him until you don't".. for me, it was wrong. I never hated him. He was a bit of a jerk, yes.. but in all the hot ways I enjoy a book's romantic interest.. that don't work out so well in real life.

From the moment Arrow acquires his "disobedient, most valued possession,' he's almost adorably obnoxious and broody. He easily squashes her escape attempts and literally tosses her about, yet all the while I'm over here making grabby hands at him.

She's a brat too, but in mostly endearing ways. Her snarky responses are relatable and funny. For him, she's annoyingly strong-willed and exactly what peaks his interest. Minus the endearing nature and her penchant for throwing herself into trouble over and over, this is pretty much my dynamic in most relationships.. so I get her in ways I don't normally get MCs.

That being said, a little over halfway into the novel I did get a bit tired of her getting herself into the same situations. At some point, you learn a little and at least adapt your approach to things. That's also where reading it really picked up for me because I was no longer as invested as I had been in each moment.

The 'bones' of the tale are all very intriguing. I liked Arrow's backstory, as well as the result that had on his views and behavior. I enjoyed the dynamic between him and the MC.. the constant conflict of emotion.. and the swings between fighting each other and engaging in other more pleasurable past times.

On a side note, when I first read Heart's work about three years ago, I felt like she had a lot of potential and just really needed to get some experience under her belt. She's absolutely done that and her writing has definitely evolved well.

Honestly, though despite my impatience with repeating the damsel-in-distress angle too frequently for my taste, I am now eagerly awaiting book two. If you want a fun, steamy read and enjoy a morally grey love interest, definitely give this one a try.

I received an arc (advanced reader copy) of this book and wow! This book knocked my socks off! Amazing world building. A sexy morally grey fae that you just can’t hate. Bad ass female main character. If you want to be transported into a fabulous adventure where you get to feel all the emotions and enjoy the spice then you need to read this book. I stayed up until 4am to finish reading it because I just simply didn’t want to put it down. I’m already dying for the second book to come out. This book is easily one of my favourite reads. This book has happy, sad, dark, shocking, funny, heartfelt and lustful moments. (Don’t forget to check the trigger warnings) 10/10 would read again!

In the preamble we’re told we’ll hate MMC until we love him. Yeah - I don’t think so. Refusing to call her by her name even until the end? DNF at 94% because those last pages wouldn’t have made a difference. Maybe it’s my bad, this does have bully all over it, but I’d figured we’d eventually like their relationship or he’d be redeemed/grow. Absolutely not the case - a smirking, slimy pervert ‘till the end.

eww

I hate reading this book with a passion. I loved the first few chapters, the main girl lost her memory and found herself in the Fea kingdom as a slave, a man buys her then treats her like dirt. She later finds out he’s the king and she start working at the kitchen, whole time she was planning to escape and find her family, and I was rooting for her 😭.
This disgusting man of main lead is attracted to her due to her talking back at him, he forces her to personally work under him, locks her in his room like a bird. Starves her so she can eat from his mouth 🤮.
The main girl is an idiot, decides to use her body to get him to trust her so she can escape but she’s also into it, (I don’t like their bed scenes because is so disgusting) then the dumbass decided to jump from the window, whole time she could’ve done that, but the dumbass gets caught anyway and he punishes her. (With sex) 🤢. Again not into it because he only sees her as a slave and his possession. And his whole reason of hating humans is so stupid.
I got so triggered in the end because he only saves from her psychotic brother and she goes back to him, he barely apologized 😪

This was such a confused book. Confused/ confusing characters. 1 chapter the MCs liked each other, next chapter they hated each other and had thoughts of killing each other. The world building was made complicated with all the sub-worlds and trying to make them conneccted to the main world. Or realms in the case of the book.

The overall plot and storyline definitely had potential. Personally i feel like if the author had amped down on the enemies part of the enemies to lovers, it would have worked much better.

I started with a 3 star rating but the way the book was going ended up with 1 star.

*** spoilers **
How does this even have 28% 5 stars?
Like are you guys even okay?

I'm 32% done with the book and my only thoughts is wtf did I just read.
The trope of a king buying a slave and falling in love is what drew me in and yet it falls flat.

The first issue :
The writing.
It feels so muddled and disconnected. There's barely any emotion in the writing itself so everything sounds monotone.
You constantly have to go back to the last paragraph and REREAD IT ALL OVER AGAIN to just get a basic idea.
This makes it so hard to create a mental picture of what's going on. There's suppose to be a time line but so much shit happens in 2 days you'd think the FMC has been there for weeks but nope. Just horrible writing.
Rating :3/5.

World building:
Can somebody explain to me how is this suppose to be a fictional world with magic and realms with kings and magical creatures when they basically just like humans ?
Yeah there's tweaks like magical birds and whatnot but what about the buildings ? How the creatures look? The food?
Why were they dressing like normal people today ?
Why were they eating food like humans?
And really what distinguished them from humans besides the fact they can smell that they are humans ?
Rating: 2/5

Characters :
Main:
The fmc , Leaf , maybe one of the most stupidest and irritating female characters I've read in this trope. She's giving Stockholm syndrome. She's tryna escape , clearly hates him but attracted to God knows what because all she talks about is how handsome he is. Is that all it takes to fall in love with someone who literally has you in a chained collar , assaults you and treats you like shit? I don't think so. Her plans are so dumb like why is she taking this long to actually do something ? All she does is "map things out" but what if she's ganna do with all that mapping if you're in a cage!?
Why hasn't she tried to use one of the feathers on him?
Drug him with the gold serum . He literally told her too much could kill him. She even had the chance to escape but decided to stay .Like please , I want to root for you but even Ari had to tell her what to do. Actually multiple people had to tell her what to do. None of her decisions so far has been smart unless somebody gave her the step by step. She's suppose to be trained as a warrior . It's literally in the 3 things we know about her besides what she looks like
1. She's immune to gold serum
2. She's good with weapons and was trained and it's like muscle memory for her
3. She has memories of the forest and her brother who might be her twin
Why isn't this knowledge utilized?
She gets assaulted like every 2 chapters and there's no even emotion or thoughts behind it.
Guys just be randomly putting their fingers into her and she's just like okay. Why is it different to when they putting their dicks into her and not this?? ITS STILL RAPE. I don't even mind this being here but why isn't there any consequences? Why is it happening so often? Why is there no emotion to this? Why did she fight back against the sun guy ( I forgot the name) but not to the literal drug addict in her cell???
What about the guy on the dance floor ??
What about to goddamn Arrow????
She just assumes things and sulk about it. Complain and throw tantrums to show how "fierce and disobedient " she is but she does everything they tell her to anyways?? How is any of this a strong fmc. Rating 2/5

The mmc ,Arrowyn.
The most sleazebag king of all sleazebags out there in this book so far. We're suppose to hate him until we love him but when is that happening because how on earth are we suppose to excuse any of his actions. He assaults her 3 times already and it's not even halfway through the book. Literally rapes her . Starves her so she can eat from his mouth . Locks her in a cage , cell. Makes her a custom collar for her chain . Makes her wear basically transparent clothes , gives him a lap dance , feed him , massage him , help his nightmares and that's just the things I can remember. He sees her as a slave and nothing more. He's just enticed by the fact she hates him , "disobedient " and is a human. She's just a pawn for him to take out his parent issues out on because humans blew up his family.
I get it. Traumatic past = prick character , but tell me why is everyone saying he's a good guy?????? He's 27 and a king and yet so far it doesn't look like he's doing a good job.
He acts like a child who was given the crown but he's almost in his 30s so wtf????
All the story so far has shown he just really hate the humans and does everything to kill off the gold raiders. They the strongest but compared to who??? This book is dual pov and we see him do nothing besides talk about how much he hates Leaf and humans and killing slaves and hating the gold raiders. Boy has daddy issues and apparently that justifies why he treats Leaf like crap.
Rating :0/5

Both:
They suppose to be these complex fleshed out characters (that's how it seems they were suppose to be like) but they just petulant horny teenagers who acts like they've been on some concerning websites and never clicked out. I've never rooted for two main characters to not be together so much in a book before.

Ari :
By far my favorite character.
She's a sayeeda who's not from the same realm but is stuck fulfilling her duties to the king. She's smart , has a dry sense of humor , caring and overall the most complex character here. I don't really have much to complain about her , she's actually the reason I got this far. I wanted to see if there was more about her and her life before. (Also is the reason I gave this book a 1 star) Rating :5/5

There's not much about any of the other characters like grendal or Raiden and his father so I'm not ganna rate them or add them here. Supporting characters are tenfold better than the main anyways.

Plot :
I love the trope of girl being bought and taken as a slave , plans to kill him but then fall in love . Not to mention enemies to lovers???? Who wouldn't be intrigued. The author had great ideas . Different realms , the birds and lighting , magical creatures , a girl amnesia and a king who didn't want the throne. The execution was horrible and the characters sucked. Worldbuilding and timing wise also did too. Where was the politics??? He's a king! More about their different creatures, how is each realm different , culture , food , traditions , laws. Anything at all???
The book focused too much on the sex and not enough on literally anything else.
I've read better books with this exact plot line on wattpad written by 16 year olds. Dark Romance is a staple genre in my reading list and this made me want to quit reading forever and find a new hobby.
I hope this does get better , I've read more less than 5 stars reviews and I saw some spoilers about her escaping but then comes back and her brother is another prick too but this book isn't for me. I don't think I can continue this with all of these issues but if I do I'll come back to edit or maybe change my view on this.

Thank you for reading my rant :)

DNF @50%

It wouldn't be fair to rate this when I couldn't make up my mind if I liked it at all. In this case, I'd say it definitely wasn't EPIC. I'm not a fan of amnesia stories, unless it's really, really good (as in the chemistry between the MCs has got to blow my mind away). I'm also not a fan of the heroine's half-shaved head LOL. I'm sorry if you think that's shallow or superficial. I'm only stating a personal beauty preference. Not to mention, the plot, apart from the concept, sounded like every other type of average Fantasy Romance where the female lead gets bought as a slave, she fights her attraction to the male lead, they have words and then they end up falling in love. It's a similar formula some authors are desperately trying to replicate of popular stories with the same genre.

Normally, I wouldn't mind this math/troupe but, it didn't work here. I didn't feel much genuine attraction between the MCs, at least not the kind that fizzled my bones or curled my toes. When they kissed, I'm like 'Oh, okay, what's next?'. Their chemistry failed to pull me in, and let's not get started by how we rarely see ARROW or what he does. It's mostly confined to the heroine and her thoughts, and 50% in we still don't know who the fuck she is. There were not bread crumbs, and she just spends her time idly being 'bullied' by Arrow.

I'm not squeamish like other readers who rated this poorly just because they can't stand the idea of slavery or dub-con stuff. It's a kink. Don't get your knickers in a twist because THIS WAS CLEARLY A DARK ROMANCE, and obviously if you disagree with a story that pushes your moral boundaries, then don't bash the author for writing something that isn't your cuppa tea. It's just unfair to the effort they put into their work.

Other than that, this story is either A HIT OR MISS for some readers. For me, I decided not to waste my time on a story I'm not invested in.

This book is actually so badly written. The characters are so splintered and make no sense. One minute they want to kill each other and then next they’re having spicy times and it’s just so disjointed. The pacing is really terrible as well, using the tactic of: “well it’s been three days since you’ve been here” etc. I really don’t understand why and how it’s gotten so many good reviews because honestly it’s not great at all

Oof

I know the whole enemies to lovers thing requires a bit of hand waving over the crimes that the "bad guy" commits, but just forgetting about murdering untold numbers of slaves is... Interesting.

Recommendation: VERY GOOD. 🥈 WORTH A READ, BUT HAS A FEW FLAWS.
Will I read the next book: YES 🔮

✔️Captor/Captive✔️Enemies to Lovers✔️Forced Proximity ✔️Magic✔️Fae✔️Morally Grey MMC✔️Strong FMC

I enjoyed this book, but it was a little low on plotting/scheming and had more on the romance/spice side. The FMC was a strong lead and I liked her. She fell for Arrowyn a little too easily (I like a bit more fight/slow burn), but still felt she was a strong character. I'm eager to see how she evolves. I also liked several of the supporting characters and am eager to see more about the magic system. I'm 50/50 on Arrowyn as a MMC. I both loved and hated him (seemingly every other chapter) - but perhaps that was the author's intent. I am eager to see his evolution in the next book as well. Will he go darker or turn into King nice guy?

There was a lot of spice throughout the book - this was not slow burn at all, and they get to it pretty quickly. Most of it was quite good, but inevitably there were a few icks for me.

After that ending - I'm excited for book 2. Quite a little twist, but I'm feeling like all is not what it seems. I doubt Arrowyn is the culprit.

First off, I received an ALC of this book and it is phenomenal. Overall the story is amazing and the characters and world building are great. Arrow is all dark and broody and morally grey. Did I mention he’s Winged? lol oh yes, and his ‘touch her and die’ vibes are everything. Leaf is adorable. She’s fiery and spunky and her sass is honestly comical. She’s a girls girl and her relationship with Ari makes me miss my bestie. While listening to this book I really felt like I was apart of this story and watching it unfold right before my eyes. Normally I’m not a fan of cliffhangers but this one is executed so well (well done Juno!) and it just makes me that much more excited for book 2!

Now for the listening experience…. The narrator was amazing and the pace was great. Again, the storyline is awesome, the performance was great and I would listen to this all over again. Not sure if I should name the Narrator (for spoilers sake lol) but I think I have a new fave. Very beautifully done!

"Has anyone told you what a greedy, violent little thing, you are?"

This book had a grip on me big time! I was reading every spare second I had! It immediately sucks you in and keeps you going wondering what's going to happen next. I'm already wishing I could immediately start the next book, but alas, this one just released! This book will keep you guessing with the twists, turns and mystery. Leaf is a complete sassy badass which I LOVE. I could not get enough of it! And Arrow, oh Arrow. 😍

"Who?" His fingers dug deeper. "Tell me who did this."

"No one touches what is mine without permission."

That pretty much sums up Arrow, and what's not to love about that! 😏

Huge thank you to the author for such a gripping read, and the opportunity to arc read for you! ❤️ This was a really great book, I LOVED it!

I finished King of Storms and Feathers by Juno Heart last night and friends, you really need to read this one. If you at all enjoy an enemies to lovers spicy romance, morally grey / really a cinnamon roll fae king, a badass female warrior, and an incredibly unique magic system— this is your next read! The only thing I don't absolutely love is that it is over.
You can find this book on Kindle Unlimited! If you end up loving it like I did, please consider buying the paperback copy to help support the amazing author
[review ] 5 stars, no question- I am obsessed with King Arrowyn! Please do read the trigger warnings before you pick this one up though, it is a dark romance.

I think I'm definitely going to be putting this narrator as one of my favorites so far! Something I love about listening to audiobooks is how the narrator is able to bring life to the descriptions and voices better than my internal voice.

For the book itself, there is a list of trigger warnings as this is a dark romance. They should be acknowledged before proceeding. And if you can make it through, it'll be worth the ride!

Arrow is the perfect mesh of morally grey and heartthrob. Leaf proves to be a strong FMC that I can't help but root for. Even though everything possible could go wrong for Leaf, not once does she actually give up. Her determination is commendable and beautiful.

I cannot wait to see where this series leads. Especially after that cliffhanger 😅😭

This book had potential, it just turned out to be all wasted. There were interesting plot points but in the end all of them were boiled down to smut.

"Well, at least there's smut, right?" Yeah, no. The female MC is a slave to a man who has no redeeming qualities. He's a bad man. None of the smut was consensual. And at one point there was a whole scene of incest??

And on top of that the FMC was also just a dumb little girl who got the right idea of killing her enslaver and escaping, but gave it all up for some mediocre dicking down.

This book was a wild ride I wish I never read 'cause I will never get the braincells I lost reading this back. It was rushed and felt unfinished. It simply is not worth your read

Summoning all of booktok 📚

This book was the perfect balance between spice and plot. I was equally intrigued by both the romance and plot, which doesn't happen often!

Arrow and Leaf are... well, just damn. They are incredible characters, and I loved how sassy Leaf was, and I was thrilled that Arrow didn't lose his "possessiveness" as the book progressed. He stayed a true morally grey character, and I absolutely loved that about this book.

It's probably some of the best spice scenes I've read in the fantasy genre this year! If you're wondering if you should read it, definitely give it go!!

I would rather shit in my hands and clap then re-read this book.

How I finished it is beyond me.

The characters lack depth, the world building is shallow and the relationship between the main character and her love interest (if you can call him that) is a shit show.

How we are supposed to like Arrow after all the terrible things he does to Leaf is a true mystery to me. I had hoped for a good grovelling arc but it was no where to be seen. This man is trash and has no redeemable qualities. Justice for Leaf

That ending tho?? WILD. How did he switch up that fast. Fake ass bitch. Also leaf?? As a name 😭 Fr?? That’s so funny. What’s even funnier was that It was green at first but he choose a more stupid one. Anyway, yeah It was good. Good story and plot twists. This is a bit on the darker side, not that bad but like if u like Normal romance, this isn’t for you. Cause it really took “ur mine,” to a WHOLE new level. Overall it was nice tho.

I loved the storyline because it was a little different. The MMC was kind of an ass in the beginning, which really helped to establish the enemies to lovers baseline. And even in the end he wasnt perfect, which makes so much sense with his background. Loooved loved loved the FMC and that she didn't change her mind and stood by her principles.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🌩️ I just finished King of Storms and Feathers and honestly I was not prepared for how much I would fall into this world. It feels like a dark fairytale and I was completely hooked. We start with the girl waking up in a cage with no memory at all and the panic is written so well that I felt it in my stomach. Then Arrowyn the King of Storms and Feathers buys her and he is every flavour of broody complicated morally grey fae king energy that I cannot resist.

✨ leaf 🍃

She won me over so quickly. She is scared confused and trying to hold herself together but she has this quiet strength that builds slowly and beautifully. I kept rooting for her because she never stops trying to figure out who she is and what happened to her.

Arrowyn is a whole storm of trauma and attitude. He walks around like a cold glittery wall of resentment and then suddenly I am feeling sorry for him because you can tell he is carrying way too much. Their chemistry is slow intense and full of tension in the best unreadable way.

🌙 World Building

The world is honestly gorgeous. The palace feels glittery and dangerous. The magic tied to storms and feathers feels soft and powerful all at once. I kept stopping to reread descriptions because they were so pretty.

📖 Plot

The story surprised me. It starts with captivity and confusion then moves into secrets palace tension and the slow return of her memories. Everything grows piece by piece which kept me completely hooked. Her escape had me holding my breath and the ending has a twist that made me whisper oh no out loud. It sets up the next book perfectly.

What I Loved

🌸 The slow emotional burn that kept building in tiny moments
🌸 The dreamy writing that felt soft and rich
🌸 The atmosphere that was magical haunting and beautiful

What I Did Not Love

⏳ Some scenes dragged and I wanted the pacing to pick up
⏳ Arrowyn held back a bit too much at the start and I wanted more insight
⏳ A few court scenes felt a little long

🌟 Final Thoughts

This book gave me everything I love in a fantasy romance. A moody fae king with emotional damage secret memories slow tension and a world that feels alive and beautiful. A very solid four star read and I am absolutely grabbing the next book after that twist.
