...It was on the Friday afternoon that, as she stood gazing wistfully out the window overlooking the front drive and trying to swallow a lump that would keep rising treacherously in her throat, that a gay voice "Come and play tennis?", and she turned in almost guilty haste to encounter a pair of vividly blue eyes. She recognised the girl as Elsie Cleverly, one of her form-mates, of whom she had so far taken but little account. She was gazing at her now in the friendliest fashion, and Dallas found herself smiling in response.
"Pixie, Renie and I are going to play tennis," Elsie repeated. "Will you come and make up the four?"
"I'd love to," exclaimed Dallas with enthusiasm, and hurried off to get her racquet.
