When the detective heroine gets a necklace for her birthday, she doesn't know that it, and the perfectly timed natural alignment of the earth energies, will plunge her back in time. There's she's rescued by the hero. She refuses to believe that anything is off other than she being surrounded by actors. But when she arrives in London she realizes that she's very much lost.

The hero, portrayed as a caring and passionate man on board his ship instantly turns into a cold authorize asshole. It was really was a severe 360 in character between the hero as the caption and the hero as the duke. On the journey to London he came to grips with the fact that the woman he pulled from the water was crazy but he felt such attraction to her as well as the overwhelming urge to protect her.

So, he brings her back to his estate. But there, I think he realizes just how much of a liability she is. He fights to keep her from the asylum but he also fights to keep his family name above scandal. He orders her secluded inside the house. She basically becomes a prisoner until she vaults the garden wall and escapes to his grandmother house. (The vaulting scene was amazing by the way). The heroine has a sharp tongue and less than stellar impulse control, which aren't really great traits for law enforcement but hey.

As a result, she is very quick to jump into action or start an argument, which forces the hero to bring her back into his estate to avoid the scandal she'll cost his family. That being said, he's enraptured by her and misses her after all that time they spent on board his ship. He's also planning to marry another woman and is honestly pursuing her which is something different than your typical story line in romance. He really is cold and harsh towards the heroine most of the time but she's also quick to misjudge him and say things that made me cringe. They sleep together one night when the hero is told from a friend that the heroine loves him but it really didn't change a thing between them. They still were at odds because of the hero's refusal to acknowledge his feelings.

The story is very oddly paced, with huge time gaps and skipped details. Also, by the end I grew to hate the two characters equally. She's sent back to her own time right, and the hero chases after her. End of the story? Nope, instead he leaves back to his own time when she refuses to go with him. But she ends up following him anyway, so what was the point of that? There was also a bizarre murder mystery going on but I didn't pay much attention to it. This book was alright but I felt it was poorly written. It they just wrapped it up when he comes to the present to fetch her, I would have been marginally more pleased but even so, it was very basic and without much...poetry, I guess is the word? No real magic in the writing.

I must say this genre of books is not really "my cup of tea," but the time travel & murder mystery scanning generations, kept my interest. Very entertaining read, it might have been fun to read about the changes in history but perhaps a sequel concerning her friend will be entertained.

When Midnight Comes by Robin Burcell

I liked this story.

The description of the book I am listing below is from the back jacket of the book. I'm adding it because I believe the one on the Goodreads page does not depict this story.

CHIVALRY, ROMANCE, AND A TOUCH OF MURDER

Miami detective Kendra Browning definitely lives for today. But as she investigates a baffling series of homicides, she suffers a freak accident that sends her back to the middle of nineteenth-century London—and into the arms of Captain Brice Montgomery.

The imposing Brice is a man to stir any woman's heart, and Kendra is no exception. He is also her only protection in this confusing place, where her tales of the future defy belief. Soon Kendra learns that although time cannot keep danger away, timeless love can provide safe passage for all.
