[Barrister Parvateesam]

Rate this book
First novel Describes the naive Parvateesam running away from home in Mogaliturru, a small town that he calls a "famous historical city" in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, in order to become a barrister. The novel depicts troubles he faced in dealing with other languages, the naive way he behaves with people from the outside world. It ends with his reaching shores of England. First part is set within the years 1850 to 1900, while India was still under British rule. Struggle for independence barely beginning in south India. Parvateesam decides to leave for England because of the way he is taunted by his teacher and friends, thinking becoming barrister is the only solution to redeem him self.. He runs away from home with what little money he had. He knows no other language other than Telugu (spoken in Andhra Pradesh), believing that once he reaches Madras (Chennai : capital city of Tamil Nadu) he can take a ship to England. He knows nothing of the hard ships of this journey.

I read this book for the first time in 10th grade and absolutely loved it. Later I re-read it again and loved it even more. I have been searching for a english version of this book and hope to find it one fine day. This is an amazing piece of literature and one of the funniest novels I have ever read.

The author is so full of humour, he makes you laugh at the silliest of things. The protagonist is an innocent and sometimes almost stupid teen who sets out to London from a small village in India to pursue law as his career. It portrays, also, snapshots of social and cultural aspects and taboos in India before independence. If you can read Telugu then start immediately and appreciate the rib tickling sarcasm. Hats off to the author!

Barrister parvateesam A timeless gem of Telugu literature and My first-ever Telugu novel pick up,
I really don't know where to start to express my thoughts about this novel even though it has been published nearly 100 years ago the refinement writing skills of author Mokkapati Narasimha Sastry shines throughout the book. Even though most of the narration majorly written in humours way the different scenarios and predicaments will leave their impact on you, especially the period of independence fight had a great impact on me while reading, author has captured excellently the essence of all the human relations and the effects of those bonds on an individual. One of the best books I have ever read in my life.

Prose in Telugu will remain unmatched. The words flow to develop vivid images in your brain.
The combination of real life incidents / people, exaggerated from the narrator while he probably hides some feelings while openly accepting others.

Reading this book for a 2nd time as I find myself in vaguely similar circumstances... A naive guy from rural India goes to a country not often visited....
It's incredibly funny and with time shows a mirror to ideas that have changed (for both good and bad) and others that have dug down deeper...

I suspect this is not the last time I will read it... Given I know characters from the book IRL and have grown up around the culture.

As many others mentioned, I read this book first when I was in my 10th standard in school. That was an awesome experience then. later I bought this book recently again and read it. This time all the three parts were included in this new printed version. I felt mesmerized reading this book all over again after 11 years.
One may get bored in the later parts, but this is the best for the times this book is printed and for the following it has acquired through Radio and Weeklies. The pace of the book might be slow or the descriptions about the people are very different because those days people don't have these many shades as they have today. Then people are ether good or bad, where as now we cannot decide whether one is good or bad. That is why the book has a lot of optimism all over it.

I loved reading it. But do not expect the dumbness of protagonist to continue from part 1 to other two parts. He is well matured and developed and will win your hearts.

Really this book is amazing.I have read this book of 1st part in my tenth standard and recently I had read other 2 parts. The 1st part was humorous and 2nd and 3rd were not that much humorous but not boring and we can read once. The second and third parts contains about his studies in ENGLAND and his practice as a lawyer and freedom movement in our country.

I have read the 1st part of this book in my 10th grade. All I remember about this book was how funny it was.

Now, after reading the 2nd and 3rd parts too, this book is more than a humorous book. I like the transition of naive, young Parveetheesham in to an adult who has to deal with the internal struggle of western ideas he came across in England and the Indian ideology during independence.

Though the characters and day to day life is described in great detail, one thing this book is definitely not is boring. There wasn't a continuous span of 5 minutes where I wasn't laughing while reading this book. Part 3 is less humorous than the first 2 parts, but it also shows how Parveetheesham evolved with age.

Giving it 4 stars as I see how colorism, casteism and class system was so imbibed in Indian culture during the 1920s while reading this. Even though it's probably a true depiction of affairs at that point of time, it still left me with a bad taste to see such discrimination.

Lot more than a funny book!

Reminiscing the fun in studying the abridged version in high school, I picked this book up expecting a humorous narration of Pravateesam's experiences. But it is so much more! Loved the contextual portrayal of social and historic issues: living through World War2, India's independence movement, colorism, child marriage, and caste-based classism.

Parvateesam is a naive, energetic, and obedient young man. His coming of age story is written in a way that makes you deeply care for him. The transition between the parts is smooth and it is endearing to see Parvateesam trying hard to balance between internalising modern ideas and respecting traditions.

The book gets less humorous but remains interesting until the end. I highly recommend reading it.

Heard a lot about this book and it was also a part of the curriculum for the students of higher secondary school. The book enjoys a reputation of being one of the standard book for humor in telugu literature. The book is divided into three parts and the first part and the first half of the second part stands perfect to its reputation. However the third division drags the pace and slowly the story drifts towards the independence movement though contemporary to the time the book was authored.
Even if one shelves the book without reading the third part one can be excused but the first and second part of the book is a real laughing delight.

It wasn't hilarious for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed every part of Parvateesam's beautiful journey. My favorite are definitely the first 2 parts of him traveling to Europe and his experience in the foreign. If it were an English book, it would have got made into a feature film atleast 3-4 times by now. I just recently discovered that the late early 90s or late 80s students had this book as 'Upavaachakam' or 'Non-Detailed'.

Would recommend every telugu guy and everyone who can read telugu properly to read it.

That feel of nostalgia! :) This is hands down one of the best telugu books I happen to read! A pure bliss! I read this so many years back in my 10th grade, but still I remember the impact it had! Time to revisit again I guess and it did bring a smile when I accidentally saw it here and couldn't hold myself rating it 5 stars!

We had this a my 10th class non detailed. But I bought this again and totally dipped into nostalgic feelings.

Hahaha... This made me strong person. Below two points we should learn from this book.
1. Don't afraid to take big steps in life, you will find a way somehow.
2. If you don't know something ask others rather than act like diligent intelligent.

Book gives insights of our culture, different people, practices which we had earlier, some of the stories are good to hear those are real contemporary. Nicely written, given vivid pictures about Fabian society.
