A proper gentleman. A stoic soldier. Their passion ignites a defiant love…

Lord Patrick Upshur seemingly hasn’t a care in the world. He’s a younger son of a wealthy lord in the Realm and his only responsibilities include behaving in a manner his father sees fit and possibly getting married someday. No one, not even Patrick’s closest sibling, knows that he’s hiding a painful secret – one that could disgrace him and the Upshur family forever.

Commandant Iseul of the White Riders understands he should concentrate on only three things – commanding his men in the barracks, serving the sovereign, and protecting the Realm. He’s only given in to his deepest desires once and he’s vowed to never do it again.

Both are resigned to their fates as the annual summer Solstice festival arrives.

After a chance encounter in a secluded courtyard in a tavern, it’s love at first sight.

Enamored, the two vow to meet again, despite the edicts of the Realm forbidding any relationship between them.

As their passion blossoms into something deeper, they plot to run away together but are thwarted by tragedy.

Can their love survive in a world that forces them to conceal their feelings?

This high-heat romance with a guaranteed happily-ever-after is part of The Serrulata Saga but can be read as a standalone.

Where do I even begin with this one!? 🥵🥵

I first want to thank the author for allowing me to get an ARC of this novella for an honest review.

I have read all the available books for this series and I absolutely love this series so much! Second Glance was definitely the spiciest of them all. I give it a 4.5 peppers out of 5.

I love that this author writes about diversity and inclusion so much! But she also talks about the hardships they endure, while it might be hard to read, it gives a true representation and hopefully more people can be aware and make a change.

Knowing the rest of the story before reading this one was super helpful in knowing the background. I would actually love to tandem read this with the series to get a full timeline picture.

I actually really enjoy these romance novellas a lot more than I would have if it was written into the book.

I really enjoyed the Gathering of the Four so was excited to learn their would be novellas tied to the universe. Second Glance is a beautiful and spicy story that shows opposites can attract and love does not discriminate. I adored the representation not only of LBGTQAI+ but disability as well.

The writing is engaging and perfect and at some points I was so worried despite being promised a happily ever after in the blurb it wouldn’t happen. If that isn’t a sign of amazing writing I don’t know what is! The characters are amazing and well developed as well as fleshed out. I can say I loved all the main ones.

After reading this one I quickly went and bought the others and can’t wait to get stuck in.

Second Glance is the fourth book in The Serrulata Saga series and a LGBT Fantasy tale. A MM historical romance. Even though it is part of The Serrulata Saga series it can be read as a standalone. It is my favourite in the series.
This is a high heat forbidden romance tale where constructs of time believe that same sex relationships is taboo. To do so is to bring ruin to yourself and family. But falling in love does not discriminate.
The heat is turned way up in this tale as they fall in love at first sight. Can they maintain their relationship and hide who they truly are from societal values in the Realm, or will they be exposed and ruin everything they have.
Strong emotions are evoked and run high in this novella. There are a lot of twists and obstacles to navigate but you find yourself rooting for this couple who just want to love each other.

Here is my review of Second Glance by A E Bennett

This is an interesting story although not a story I would usually read! I have not read the previous book in the series but found it didn’t hamper me reading this one.The characters are mainly likeable, there’s only Lord Garrett Upshur who isn’t, in my opinion and he’s very overbearing and nasty to most people especially his sons. Lord Garrett Upshur has four sons and they are gentlemen. Silas is slightly older than Patrick but they have a very close friendship as brothers and get on well together. Patrick would love to share his secret with Silas but worries that he would disown him once he knows that Patrick fancies men not women. He enjoys going out to town with Silas on Solstice day, dressed up and wearing masks, going tavern to tavern, getting drunk. This particular day, they end up in the Saucy Siren which is a gambling den but where you can get a girl as well. Patrick isn’t keen but follows his brother. His brother goes to a table while Patrick relieves himself then spots a man entering a secret room. He goes to follow him and ends up in a narrow entryway which he follows to a courtyard and welcome fresh air. He spots a bench so sits down. Then the most gorgeous man comes into the courtyard and before he knows it, they are kissing. He is enjoying it. They have a special moment and then it is time to part but when will he see his white knight rider again? The story is well written and very steamy all the way through. It’s a good love story, well thought out and planned by the author.

Lord Patrick Upshur has had a challenging life and after the severe fever which ailed him a number of years ago left him with severe mobility issues to the point of him needing a walking stick and tiring easily but when he comes across a man who is the perfect match for him he can't believe it and sets about a relationship with him, the problem, it is forbidden for a man to be with another man in the Realm.
Commandant Iseul of the White Riders is finally finding happiness in his life with Lord Patrick and despite the sneaking around the two must undertake constantly it is very much worthwhile thanks to the amazing physical connection they have and the true love they are developing for each other but being a White Rider means he knows the risks both are taking and so he is always working to try to keep them safe.

Can the two eventually form a relationship which is able to survive the Realm and all those who would see them broken apart or will their positions in life mean there are just too many things against them for it to survive?

This is a well written book that is full of high-heat passion and gives an insight into these characters and how those like them are treated and must live within the Realm which for me adds to the Serrulata Saga as it gives a further depth to the overall story and draws the reader even deeper into the world. A small markdown for a bit of editing but this is still a very strong book which is well worth a read.

This is the 4th book in The The Serrulata Saga. This could be read as a standalone however I think reading the books in order would really enhance my joy of the stories.
The author has an amazing way of writing that really brings the world to life. The characters are so well written that you can't help but be captivated by their story. This has some steamy parts when Patrick and Iseul are together the chemistry was consuming. My heart felt so heavy for them as they struggled to be together in a world that doesn't understand or accept them

This is a forbidden romance. Not only is it forbidden because it is a MM romance but also because of the heireacy at which out lovers find themselves in.

Lord Patrick Upshur has been struggling in his life. From being left with mobility issues after an illness, he is also keeping a secret from the world. And that is his attraction to men. Same sex relationships are against the law in the a Realm so his secret has to remain hidden.

Commandant Iseul of the White Riders fell for Patrick from the instant he saw him. He can't deny his attraction he feels and he will stop at nothing to be happy with Patrick.

But will they even stand a chance? With their love being against the law will they survive to be together or will they have to keep their love secret. And what will happen if their romance is revealed.

Second Glance is the fourth book in The Serrulata Saga by A.E. Bennett. It is an historical fantasy/romantic adventure with sci-fi and dystopian elements- with a MM romance (LGBTQ+) at the heart of the storyline. This opposites attract story is packed full of chemistry, spice, and passion as the characters embark on their forbidden romance, and all the adventure that comes.
The author weaves plenty of action, drama, danger, challenges, threats, mystery, tension, and intrigue into the story to keep things interesting.
A.E. Bennett has a very descriptive and detailed writing style, which really helps to paint a picture of the world, characters, and adventure- but still, I had trouble connecting with the characters, which made it hard to invest in them or the outcome of their story. I can’t really pinpoint why I didn’t connect the way I had hoped, maybe I was just having an ‘off’ reading day. So I might have to revisit this book again in the future to see if I still feel the same way or not. So stay tuned.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, A.E. Bennett!

This was a really good MM historical romance with a surprisingly well-developed plot, wonderful characters, high heat, and a lovely HEA. Patrick is the younger son of a minor lord. His father is very wealthy and is doing everything he can to climb up the social ladder, including marrying off his children one by one for status. Iseul is a mid-level leader in the military who was basically sold by his parents to the military because they were poor. Patrick and Iseul meet, sparks fly, and they can't stop thinking about each other. What follows is a really wonderful story with interesting side characters, plot twists that make sense, great chemistry, and a very satisfying conclusion. I have not read the other stories in the Serrulata Saga but I didn't feel like I needed to read them to enjoy this story, which was really so well done. Highly recommend to anyone who likes historical MM romance!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I enjoyed reading this second chance romance story. This is a newer author for me which I enjoy their attention to details that pull me into the character’s world with ease. Their characters come to life on every page and keep me turning pages to the end. This is a well written story about Lord Patrick and Commandant Iseul. Patrick’s only responsibility is to take over for his father and get married someday. But he has a secret that could destroy everything for him. Iseul has a lot on his plate. He has given in to his passion once and vowed not to do it again. When fate throws them into the same tavern, will their passion reunite? You don’t want to miss this story for sure. These two characters are connectable and make the story easy to read. They have great growth as well as chemistry throughout. This is a fast paced, hard to put down story. I really enjoyed this story and I highly recommend it.

Here is a m/m romance within the Serrulata Saga and it is full of heart felt romantic scenes between Lord Patrick Upshur, third son of one of the lesser lords in the Realm and White Rider Commandant, Iseul. Their yearning for each other is forbidden yet neither can help but think of the other. As they find a way to secretly meet, they discuss the dream of running away. Yet with Patrick’s family expectations of him, even with his inability to use his legs at times, plus the military requirements for Iseul, they struggle to conjure up a foolproof plan. When they go forward with deriving a plan, an unexpected tragedy occurs and things quickly start in motion.

There is drama, secret relationships, royal family politics, mass hysterics and gossip, as well as a lot of twists and turns that makes this book an intense and suspenseful romance.

I enjoyed reading the endeavor between two people from opposite sides of society wanting the same thing, love.

This was such an amazing book relating to The Serrulata Saga! I have enjoyed this series very much and love that it gets even better as it progresses. I was pulled in by the cover and once I saw the dedication page, it gripped my heart and never let go. I dove right in and lost myself in this amazing romantic sci-fi world. This author has a unique way of crafting a story that is subtle at first, making you believe you can read a few pages really quickly. Hours later, I realized that what was meant to be a few minutes of reading turned into devouring the entire book. Patrick is relatable to me as I have a chronic illness with ‘bad days’ so I immediately bonded with him. The chemistry between him and Iseul is delightfully steamy and very well written. If you enjoy MM historical romance with spicy scenes and amazing characters, please give this book a chance! You can definitely read this as a standalone as well.

I have been so looking forward to SECOND GLANCE by AE Bennett, an MM romance novella set in the Serrulata Saga universe. Lord Patrick Upshur is the son of a nobleman and has a disability that at times requires him to use a cane and at others a wheelchair. I liked the way his disability was depicted in the book. Commandant Iseul is one of the White Riders. I really liked his backstory, and always enjoy the complicated backstories when boys are taken from families to join the White Riders—and Iseul was no exception. AE Bennett writes HOT romances and this one was scorching—from Iseul’s and Patrick’s first encounter where Iseul dubs Patrick his “lordling.” They have many obstacles to overcome in a kingdom that does not allow their love to exist in peace and I loved the forbidden element and how passionate they were for each other. 5/5 stars.

Second Glance: A Serrulata Saga Romance Novel (The Serrulata Saga) by A.E. Bennett. This is a great historical erotic romance with a m/m couple. Its the story of Patrick the son of a Lord and his goal in life is to stay out of trouble and marry and have a family. Which is fine but he's hiding a very troublesome secret. Iseul is a mid leader in the military who has a very sad past. He was sold by his parents to the military because his parents were so poor. When Iseul and Patrick meet sparks fly and Patrick knows he can not stay away from Iseul no matter the cost. Trying to keep their relationship a secret but knowing they both can't live without it puts them both in a very perilous situation. Will they be able to make hide it long enough for Patrick to make his father happy? Such a passionate novella that has so many wonderful characters.

Loved this! I love m/m romance and the world this book painted is so different and interesting. Patrick and Iseul are everything together. I love their love for each other, and their steamy scenes are hot! It is devastating to see how his dad treats Patrick, all because he is slightly crippled from a past fever, but his younger and one older brother treat him as equals, and that made my heart swell. I love his brothers Silas and Eion and was devastated and what befalls the whole Upshur family. My heart was torn and did not mend until Patrick and Iseul are reunited again. Lady Ambrosia is a fun addition to the story and I like her character and station in Patrick and Iseul’s lives. The ending was beautiful if not missing a few people that I was hoping would be there but I was happy with it all the same.

This is the second book that I've read by this author and is a follow on from a book I read back in March - Gathering Of The Four, which is part of the Serrulata Saga.
This could easily be read as a standalone in the series, but I actually found it much easier to fall straight back into this world having read the other first - even though the characters are different.
So not essential, but will definitely help you get into this much quicker.

If you didn't see or don't remember from my first review, I struggled with the size of the first book, so I was really pleased to see that this was a much nicer size (for me) at only just over 200 pages. I also think I see some novella sized books to follow too.
The first book introduced us to the setting and does all the world building for us - but this book was much more character driven.
I think this also suited the genre mix of this book much better being more of a spicy romance.

I loved our main characters who have their own separate issues in life, but on meeting, just know they are meant to be together.
Their chemistry is undeniable but there are problems (not too unlike present day society!) and the fact they are both men, makes this relationship impossible in The Realm.
It was pretty emotional watching them develop as a couple but also having to hide from the pressures of others.

This was again, really well written with a great storyline than so many will relate to.
A good addition to this series and I'm looking forward to reading more soon.

Second Glance is a Serrulata Saga Romance Novel. It’s part of The Serrulata Saga but can be read as a standalone, as I did. On its own, it is an enjoyable M/M romance with a disabled main character, and it certainly got me interested in reading more of the series with occasional hints to the events covered in other books.

Patrick and Iseul’s relationship is certainly something they cannot pursue in public, so they have to find ways to meet and communicate in secret. Events beyond their control sometimes bring them together, and sometimes push them apart as they try to make their dream of a life together a reality.

This book is set over a fairly long period of time, with lots of time jumps. At times it felt a bit rushed and lacked flow, but I do like that their relationship had time to develop.

I’d recommend this book to fans of LGBTQ+ fantasy. It gets four stars from me!

This was a quick and spicy read focused on a gay couple. Could be read as a stand alone as part of the series.

I liked seeing how Patrick and Iseul's relationship developed. And especially how it allowed them each to grow into themselves as well as into their partnership.

I was really interested in Iseul's White Rider powers, and in general how they work. I feel like having him be in a more hyper masculine profession made his gentle personality all that more note worthy (and that's on men written by women!).

I feel like I had a bit of a hard time at some points because the word choice kind or pulled me out of the story or some scenes weren't necessarily my taste but that is totally a me preference thing over a poorly written/executed thing. So for me this was a 3 star but if romance/smutty reads are your go to fantasy reads then this might be more for you!

I really enjoyed this book, the characters the world vividly described really tug at the heart strings and envelop you .
Patrick disabled 3rd son of a lower lord has a place amongst the gentry and certain things are expected (marrying for status, continuing the family name, knowing one's place) and others like being backwards (or homosexual, bisexual or against the regime) certainly punishable by death or ostracization.
Isuel son of a lower class sold to the White Riders, magically enhanced warriors, those to protect the realm and stay strong against any struggle, finds himself enchanted by the lordling, his lordling.
Patrick finds himself expected to marry but has other feelings and finds his secret life with Iseul.
Family feuds, political turmoil, death, struggle and secrets all link together to pull you along the story of secret love.

I was drawn to this book well before I realised that it was a novella, in part of a series, and not the first book. I decided to go ahead and dive in, and just read the others after. I have to say, it will make the journey even more exciting and fun, if you have read in order, but can absolutely read this as a standalone and completely enjoy it. I know I definitely did.
It is a short read that packs a big, spicy punch. The two fall for one another almost the instant they set eye on each other and from that moment the intensity of their feelings, and by connection to that the amount of hate and reprocussions they experience, intensity greatly. They have to journey through this together, and it only works to bring them together even more and truly make an unforgettable love.
It was a brilliant adventure and one that will really get you feeling all the heat.

I was very interested in this book as soon as I read the blurb. The way in which this the book was written it was very interesting and very well written. I did enjoy the authors writing style as it allowed the story to flow nicely. Lord Patrick Upshur was a very interesting character from the start. You could see the challenges in which he had to face prior and during the book. With these challenges in which they had to face throughout the book, it made it very fascinating and help him develop as a character. Alongside Commandant Iseul, they were very interesting and intriguing. The story of this book was very interesting, and the way the story developed and moved throughout the book was very gripping. I found that the ending of this book has a very positive ending that seemed to give a nicely complete final.

Worth the Fight . . .

Lord Patrick Upshur has not had an easy life. Weakened from a fever, he has challenges to deal with, such as mobility issues and tiring easily. He meets Commandant Iseul of the White Riders and the two are perfect together… except in the eyes of others since this behavior is not permitted. Will they give up on each other? Or will they endure the difficulties faced by anyone who goes against society’s dictates? Can they battle the Realm and win each other’s hearts?

This is a thought-provoking story line with characters who will draw the reader in and allow you to feel the strong emotions. Will their love keep them together?

Second Glance: A Serrulata Saga Romance Novel (The Serrulata Saga) by A.E. Bennett

Second Glance: A Serrulata Saga Romance Novel ( The Serrulata Saga) is a MM Romance that I really wasn’t sure what to expect going in. I had a really hard time getting into the story and I couldn’t make myself connect with the characters. I wanted to but just couldn’t. I’m going to to put this on the list of rereads and hopefully the second time around will be better. If you like this genre then I’d recommend reading it to find out what happens next. This is a fairly new author to me and I’m going to check what other books they have.

Having read the other two books of the Serrulata Saga, I was glad to pick up this one. It's a shorter read compared to the other ones. This author has a way of writing that skillfully weaves together elements of fantasy and romance, keeping you engrossed from start to finish. A.E Bennett also brings the story's setting to life, immersing you into this brilliantly built universe. It's a m/m forbidden romance filled with adventure and passion that progresses naturally, allowing you to witness the evolution of relationships amidst the ups and downs. I can't wait for the future installments of this series

Though I am a huge Romance reader of all types, I believe this is the first Regency Historical Romance I have read. I can not say that Second Glance sold me on the genre. I very much enjoyed the idea of a Proper Gentleman having a secret affair with a Stoic Soldier, and eventually finding their happily ever after. Unfortunately I felt the plot relied to heavily on the open door spicy scenes, causing the story to fall somewhat flat. I would have loved more in depth development of the characters.

Such a great historical MM story about two forbidden lovers and the political ideologies and policies that they have to conquer.

I haven't read the main story yet but after reading this sort novella I am defintely going to pick up the series.

Lord Patrick Upshur and Commandant Iseul of the White Riders are complete opposite persons but they fit so well together. Patrick is a important lord. After a terrible fever his health deteriorated . He doesn't fit in his family and has to do everything his father says. Iseul has a difficult upbringing after being sold to become a soldier. They both are amazing and well written characters.

I thought this would be just a cute read of forbidden love but I was so wrong. The storyline is intriguing. From the first page to the end you get to read about the difficulties that this two men have to overcome individual and together.
I really love their dynamic and I am glad that I got the chance to read about this amazing men.

This book forms part of the Serrulata series, although it can be read as a standalone. However, I would definitely recommend reading all of them to get the most enjoyment! This book is a tale of forbidden love and the perils the main characters face when they navigate this. The overall story is exciting to read. It spans over a number of years which allows the story to really build, even though it is only a novella.
This whole series is a great read and one I would definitely recommend. Each book just adds to it and I enjoyed this particular addition.

The fourth book in The Serrulata Saga by A.E. Bennett, this novella deepens the story of Patrick and Iseul. This story can be read as a stand-alone however you will not get all of the backstory and build-up. The characters are well developed, and the story progresses rapidly. This historical, fantasy/romantic adventure has sci-fi and dystopian elements with a MM romance as the main focus of the story.
There is just enough action and drama to keep the story alive from beginning to end. I do recommend reading this series in order though so as to get the backstory and the build-up

I loved this book so much, read it so quick and was sucked into the story of these two characters. This is one of the follow up books to Gathering The Four and I am so glad that I read that before this as it gave me the background knowledge that I needed. This was the Male to Male Spicy romance that I need but that I didn't know that I needed. The love story between these two characters and the trials that they go through to be together are mounting but love prevails. Read this if you need a feel good quick read.

Second Glance: A Serrulata Saga Romance Novel by A.E. Bennett is a forbidden MM romance with an HEA. This book really has it all. The disability representation the LQBTQ rep. This book is apart of a series but can be read as a standalone. You will fall into this world effortlessly and when you resurface into reality you will quickly realize that you have been reading much longer than you expected. You get sucked in, in the best possible way. I highly recommend giving this story a read if you enjoy a story that will give you all the feels and still has plenty of spice. 4 out of 5 stars.

I don’t typically read MM books however I was really intrigued by this one. And I’m really glad I chose to read it! It is the fourth book in the series however, I read it as a standalone. The author did really well at balancing out the spice, with the action and tension. It kept my hooked throughout the story. However, I did struggle to connect with the characters. Aside from that, I enjoyed the story and I was pleased with the ending. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Historical romances with a HEA.
