(3). This is not a classic, but it certainly is classic Lupica. I was surprised to find out this was his first novel. I had been a big fan of his sportswriting abilities and his TV commentary, and his verbiage and styleis just nothing but fun. Lucia is a quintessential New Yorker, so the setting here is very comfortable, and Peter Finley is as entertaining a protagonist as you can hope for. A silly whodunit, with twists and turns galore, and a fun cast of characters that make this a time capsule of the 80's that we can still relate to today. Great to see the first chapter of what has become a fairly illustrious career. Good stuff.
Mike Lupica's writing is clear and sharp. His prose turns Peter Finley is a fascinating protagonist. Though there are a couple of other interesting characters in this novel, Finley's personality carries this book. Finley and his mates are wonderfully witty and at times that wit seems to slow down the plot. However, the humor is so well done, that the reader cannot be too harsh.
There are several murders in this relatively short mystery-thriller so if there are slow spots, they are very short. I couldn't quite give it 5 stars, but wouldn't argue with anyone who did. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of this series and I look forward to reading the final two books.
