"Swab the decks, pump the bilges, climb the mast, and shiver me timbers!"

Captain No Beard and Hallie (his first mate + cousin) run a tight ship with their pirate crew.

They're about to leave their island and sail off into the great big ocean...only things don't exactly go to plan.

"Mongo," he called back, "there is no ship yonder. A storm is brewing."

Together with their crew, which consists of a monkey, a frog an a lion, they are about to go on an unforgettable adventure.

"Sound the alarm! Fribbit yelled to Linus"

What a cute story! I adored this one!

The dynamic between the characters was so fun and adventuresome - absolutely awesome!

The animals were bright and cheerful, and their journey had just the right amount of tension.

I especially enjoyed the twist at the end - I always loved books like that as a kid and I still do as an adult!

Definitely one to read!

This was the first book of the author's (not the only one) I'd read to my son several months back. The way the imaginary world is written is done really well (and draws you in immediately) from the child's point of view, to the extent you don't even realize it at first that it is a child's imagination narrating the storyline, not until the very end, which is tied up very neatly. The illustrations are done very well with beautiful colors. The language and dialogue is very down to earth, staying at a child's level but also interwoven is a message expressed in the interactions between the characters, in a clear and concise manner for kids to learn from and enjoy all at the same time. What an awesome adventure for parents and kids!

I just got done reading Captain No Beard An Imaginary Tale of a Pirates Life. This is definitely a new favorite for my 6 and 9 year old pirates. They just loved all of the animals (mongo the monkey my daughters favorite and Fribbit the floppy frog my sons favorite). Of course they loved hearing "shiver me timbers" as that is their favorite line when they play pirates together. This books spawns so much creativity and imagination from the young and old. It was so much fun to each act out the characters and really felt like we were in the book. My son's has also found a new favorite line to go along with his "shiver me timbers" and that is "Being a captain is hard work". The illustrations that are in this book go great with the story line and were done in such great detail and my daughter now wants to try her hand at making pirate pictures. If you have little pirate lovers in your home this book is a must.

I received this book for free to give an honest review. All words I wrote are honest and are the opinions of my children and I.

My son and I read and reviewed this book for Mother Daughter Book Reviews. Here are our thoughts:

SON SAYS:

This story is about a pirate who wants to get treasure. He sails on his boat with Mongo the Monkey, Linus the Lion, Fribbit the Frog, and Hallie the first mate looking for adventure. The cover and the pictures in the book were good – I liked them. My favorite picture is the first one in the book when it has all of the crew together. In that picture though, the monkey has a really big head and a tiny body. They should change it. My favorite part of the book is when Hallie almost falls overboard and Fribbit kept saying all the wrong things and changing what he was saying, like “Man – I mean – girl overboard” and at the end when he says “…overboard! I mean almost overboard!” That was a funny part. I liked the surprise of who the mermaid was at the end. I liked this book and I think boys and girls 10 and under would like this book.

MOM SAYS:

Captain No Beard and his motley crew of sailors head off on an adventure on the high seas aboard his mighty frigate, The Flying Dragon. But as the crew is wondering what it is sailors do aboard ships, and as they encounter stormy weather and a mysterious mermaid, he soon discovers that “Being a captain is hard work.”

Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life is an amusing picture book that puts the reader in the minds of a young boy and girl who pretend they are sailing the seas aboard a pirate ship. The story is filled with fun pirate quips such as “shiver me timbers!”, “batten down the hatches”, “sail ho”, “Davy Jones’s locker” and more. There are plenty of opportunities to adopt different accents and voices for each of the characters. It was a fun book to read aloud!

The story itself is whimsical and is full of unexpected surprises. The tale is spun literally as you would expect it to unfold when two children are playing a game involving an imaginary setting with an imaginary cast of characters. It really seemed delightfully unscripted. We all laughed when the poor overworked Captain sporadically declared “Being a Captain is hard work.” He should try being a Mom! We all particularly enjoyed the ending with the mermaid who makes a special appearance. That’s exactly the kind of mermaid I imagine myself to be.

The book features large colourful illustrations of this motley crew of pirates. Both pages (left and right) are illustrated with the text overlaid on top of the illustrations. Usually, one side of the page depicts the crew while the other side with the text has some waves lapping at the words. The pictures in the book definitely help transport the reader on the pirate adventure and were really well done.

My Bottom Line:

Carole P. Roman’s whimsical tale will be sure to delight children and parents alike. I really enjoyed reading this book aloud to my children – I make a mean pirate! I would recommend this book to boys and girls alike who love imaginary play and who are fans of pirates and big adventures. Ages 3+.

Education:
This book was such a good read. It’s perfect for beginner level readers or children who just love pirates. There are a few words that your children might not be familiar with but with an adults help they’ll be able learn those words easily.
Also I love how the characters in the books really talk like pirates. They don’t just dress up as one but they talk like a pirate through out the entire book, which leads to my next educational factor which I like about this book.
If you and your little ones are going to be playing pirates for a day then this book would be great for story time and it might give your little’s ones ideas for their next adventure scene as a pirate or a play to put on. You could actually just read the book, then make puppets so your children could play the book out for anyone wishing to watch.

Pictures:
The pictures were very colorful which pleased me. They were interesting to look at and there was so much going on in the pictures that the kids just kept looking at them, taking it all in. Even my nephew who's two spent a good hour just looking though the pictures. I also love the characters themselves. You have a brother and sister and all sorts of animals that children just love. So this book is great for boys and girls.

Storyline:
The story was cute and the ending was adorable. I really didn’t know where the plot line was going but everyone was happy with the ending. I don't want to give the ending away so I'll stop there. You just have to know that you’ll go awe when you done reading this book with your children.

Binding:
The binding is pretty good. It is a lot sturdier then it looks and the book did survive through a lot of little hands. So hopefully this book will last for a while. Plus the book is thin which makes for easy storage. You get a great book for a good price without having to use to much space to store it which we all know that we need space especially when there are so many little ones around constantly making something or bringing something home.

So all and all my review for this book is that it's perfect for children. It has a lot of color and it has great characters that kids can relate to. Plus the storyline makes you laugh and giggle. So all and all I give this book a 5/5 review. Be sure to keep an eye out for my next childrens review which should be sometime next week.

Her first series, Captain No Beard has been lauded by the Kirkus Review and read by children around the world. Her next project is the book series I Want To Do Yoga, Too. She is currently working on a new educational series that explores different cultures from a child's point of view.

My Review:

Captain No Beard is a very fun, sweet picture book that is full of imagination and heart. Carole P. Roman did an excellent job of drawing us all in to Alexander's active imagination. I thought I was on his ship, the Flying Dragon, myself. It is a very well written book that gets to the heart of an active child's play. It was a fun book to read to my boys. Hallie, Alexander's first mate which also happens to be his cousin is just as spunky as Alexander.

Everything is fun and games with this duo and their three sidekicks until a mermaid begins to surface A.K.A. Mom, and very nicely says they need to pick up their mess and of course have a snack. You don't have to be a fan of pirates to enjoy this book. It is just a fun, down to earth book anyone would enjoy.

My Review:

Captain No Beard is a spirited tale of imagination. Alexander and his cousin Hallie are really sweet, delightful children that have a very vivid imagination. In the beginning of the book you can't even tell that this is a story based on a little boys imagination. The Author has done an excellent job of tricking us and getting us to believe in what the main characters are doing and seeing.

Captain No Beard is a fascinating tale were a little boy, Alexander and his first mate, Hallie, have a wild pirate adventure all in the comforts of Alexander's bedroom. Complete with a climbing mast monkey and a loud mouth lion.

This is a very colorful active book full of a child's thoughts and playfulness.

I loved how the book was so adventurous. The words were easy to read, and easy for my five-year-old to follow. I will definitely be keeping this book, not only to read again to my daughter, but for our baby boy to enjoy once he arrives. Plus, who wouldn't want to read about pirates!?

My daughter loved this book, she has already asked to read it again! The pages are so colorful, and the story kept her wanting to turn the page. She now has new saying aboard her vocabulary: "Shiver Me Timbers"

I am such a huge fan of pirates. There is just something breathtaking about walking around saying "Aarrgh!" or "Ahoy Mateys!" that seems like it makes your day just a tad more fun.
You should try it-you might like it. Talk like a pirate with your kids while you go about the chores or pretend you are the captain and they are your first mates. It will bring a smile to your kids' faces, and probably yours too.
So my boys and I were super excited to find this cute little series about a captain and his unlikely crew sailing the imaginary seas. I think the title is adorable~Captain No Beard~ because he literally has no beard. He is a very interesting pirate captain, not to mention his shipmates as well. He has a mix of animal friends that help navigate on his boat, The Flying Dragon. For example, there is Mongo the Monkey, Linus the loudmouthed lion and of course, Fribbet the Floppy Frog.
I love the alliteration that is going on right here. It is so much fun. In fact, I think that was the first thing my son, Mikey, pointed out to me.
This isn't specifically a "learning" book; but I do think it could be if you really wanted it to be. I do, however, think this is a great teaching tool for imagination. I appreciate the fact you have the adventure the crew goes on and then always at the end, the captain and his first mate, Hallie, find themselves back home.
I think this book is great for both sexes as it doesn't really play to either one. It is just fun to read, fun to pretend with, and fun to imagine.
I have to give it five stars *****

I liked this book and thought it was very cute and had a great story line. However, my daughter LOVED this book and thought it was wonderful. She needed some help reading some words (she is only 5), but had a great time reading most of the words on her own. There were several times she asked me a question about the book, we turned the page and the characters in the book asked the same thing my daughter did, then they answered the question. We loved the captain's saying, "Being a captain is hard work." Somehow, although as an adult I could guess the ending, I thought the ending really made this a solid and lovely book. I actually read the ending a second time because I liked it so much! I later found my daughter (after reading it several times initially) had picked this book up (among her hundreds of others) and was reading it again to herself because she liked it so much. I was really impressed with this book and how much it related to my daughter. If you have any question if your little one will like this book, wonder no more they will LOVE it! I cannot wait to read more from this book series and author- it is a complete winner!!

*note- I received this book for free to review, however the opinions stated in it are completely mine and have no bearing on getting the book to review.

I love that Captain No Beard takes his crew on an adventure on the high seas aboard their ship, The Flying Dragon. I also enjoyed that this story was about sailors wondering what they should do aboard the ship. In this tale they learn how to take care of the ship, they encounter stormy weather, and they meet a mysterious mermaid as they hunt for treasure.

This is a great story that emphasizes the importance of using ones imagination. I think that now, in a day and age that focuses so much time and attention on technology that sometimes our children lose sight of such an important part of being young and growing up. The illustrations are colorful, fun, and really brings the story full circle.

I can’t wait to see what Carole will think up next for Captain No Beard and his crew!

This is a great book and one that I highly recommend for children of all ages.

Captain No Beard, his first mate and cousin Hallie, and their zany crew sail the mighty seas on his frigate, the Flying Dragon. Each morning the captain gives out the daily orders to his crew.

During one adventure the captain and his crew sailed into a massive storm where the first mate was almost washed overboard. Then a mermaid appeared with a bounty of treasure and the crew ended the day with a pirate’s feast.

Author Carole P. Roman does a wonderful job taking youngsters through an imaginary day in the life of a pirate. Filled with pirate lingo, CAPTAIN NO BEARD will delight youngsters of all ages on this fanciful journey.

The beautiful and vivid illustrations will hold readers’ attention. The cheerful and bold drawings brings the tale to life.

This charming tale will entertain and inspire youngsters to undertake their own imaginary voyages. A fun read, colorful drawings, and a rich imagination will make this a favorite at story time.

FTC Full Disclosure - This book was sent to me by the author in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

I enjoyed reading about Captain No Beard, Mongo the Monkey, Linus the Lion, Fribbit the Frog, the Captain's First Mate, his cousin Hallie and of course his ship, the famous Flying Dragon.
In this first book of the series, a bad storm is on the way so all the crew have to work hard to survive it, but the adventure doesn't end there - they hear a voice coming from below!
Beautifully presented with great colour drawings.
Recommended for boys AND girls.

If you use your imagination you could set sail on a ship the Flying Dragon. At the helm is Captain No Beard and his First Mate Hallie. They take their very special stuffed animals and turn them into the crew on the ship. They are: Mongo the monkey, Linus the loudmouthed lion, and Fribbet the floppy frog. The Captain could not have chosen a more dedicated crew. The Captain had to make sure everything was in ship shape. After all, being the Captain is hard work.

The author has some imagination herself. She takes the reader on an adventure at sea with a very colorful and funny, I mean fun, crew. The story will teach the children what fun it is to use their imagination to create their own adventures. It is also a great lesson in team work.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

Captain No Beard and his mates, Mongo, Linus, Fribbit and Hallie are off on an adventure. They are all aboard his ship, the Flying Dragon. While Captain No Beard shouts orders to his crew, a bad storm blows in. Prepared as always Captain No Beard takes it all in stride until he sees her. It couldn't be! Could it? They'll have to investigate.

Carole P. Roman has a fantastic start to a series of books children of all ages will love. I especially enjoy the fact these books aren't for either boys or girls, they are for BOTH! Full of fun and adventure, you'll be traveling back to your childhood with these wonderful books. Great stories with a message and writing that is superb.

I found no issues with this one.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it's about time we had some really great pirate adventures again!

Whenever Alexander and his cousin Hallie hop on Alexander's bed to play, they become Captain No Beard and his fearless pirate crew of 'The Flying Dragon'. They set sail for a voyage of imagination as First Mate Hallie, Mongo the Monkey, Linus the loudmouthed lion, and Fribbet the floppy frog - who are in reality, three stuffed animals. Together, Alexander and Hallie sail the seven seas in a magical vessel bound for dangerous and exciting adventures.

I must say that I enjoyed reading these books. They were quick reads for me and overall, I would give the entire series an A+! In my opinion, this series would make a great gift for children. Each book teaches children valuable lessons such as patience and tolerance; sharing; responsibility and cooperation; being a good friend and what to do when meeting strangers.

Captain No Beard, by Carole P. Roman, is a delightful tale of a young boy on an adventure of his life. Alexander, the pirate captain extraordinaire, and his cousin and first mate, Hallie, are joined by a menagerie of a crew: Mongo, the "mast-climbing monkey," Linus, the "loud-mouthed lion," and Fribbit, the "floppy frog." Together they travel on their ship called the Flying Dragon, whose name was chosen for its fear-inducing qualities.

Every morning is greeted with orders of the day with pirate loving phrases such as the swabbing of decks, pumping of bilges, climbing of the mast, and the ever popular chorus of "Shiver Me Timbers!" Alexander expects a lot from his crew, but when Hallie asks a question and points out that she won't know an answer unless she asks, he digs down and pulls out his trusty pirate dictionary to find out. This captain business is hard work.

When a storm rolls in, the crew must work together to save themselves from falling overboard. Avoiding possible catastrophe, the calm after the storm brings a voice from below. Hallie deduces that the voice must be from a mermaid, and the crew proceeds cautiously. Appearing on the deck of the Flying Dragon, the mermaid comes prepared, with a treasure of golden doubloon cookies and a sense of humor that all parents need.

Roman's book is a full color picture book suitable for children of all ages. The pictures are large and bright, bringing a wonderful visual to the engaging story. I read this story with my four children, ages 10, 8, 5, and 2 1/2, and I have to say we were all engaged. Pirate lingo provides plenty of opportunity for audience participation! Captain No Beard has a deeper message to its older audience. As Alexander often exclaims, "Being a captain is hard work!" The book reminds us that our children, engrossed in fantasy and pretend games are also hard at work every day, learning through play.

So gather your family, and prepare to drawl some pirate lingo. A word to the wise, though? Limit your pirate voice and don't attempt to read the entire book as a pirate. It left my throat raw and when the cheers of "Let's read it again!" rang out, I needed a tea break.

Have your children gather 'round. I hear there's a new pirate in town! Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate's Life, written by the talented Carole P. Roman, is a delightful tale that will entertain children of all ages. Captain No Beard isn't your typical pirate. He's a young boy named Alexander. Together with his First Mate Hallie, Mongo the Monkey, Linus the Loudmouthed Lion, and the lovable Fribbit the Floppy Frog, they'll take you on adventure you'll never forget. You'll board the Flying Dragon and set sail as you learn cool pirate lingo! Be prepared to get into character and go ahead and start practicing your "arghs" because this book was made for reading aloud. It's fun for everyone!

My four year old giggled with delight and interacted with the colorful illustrations. It's not a book you'll read once. You'll want to read it over and over because it's so much fun! The repetition was a bonus because my little one would chime in and say (and sing) along with me, "shiver me timbers" and "Being a captain is hard work." It's one of the most engaging and captivating stories I've read to him in quite a while. It's also one of the most memorable! Captain No Beard makes his way though a storm and treacherous seas before he finds
his way back to his room, surrounded by his crew and first mate!

This is a story that teaches children about the amazing power of imaginations. I certainly hope my little one was inspired enough to turn his bed into a ship. He definitely got into character and had a little "sword play" with his brother. I laughed as I heard "walk the plank" and "ahoy mateys" coming from their room. I can't wait to see where Captain No Beard ends up next! I'm happy to know my boys will be along for the ride! Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in order to complete this review. There is just something about a tale of pirates that intrigues children and excites them to the adventure. They love pirate-speak such as “Shiver me timbers,” “Aye Captain….a big blow,” “Aye, me hearties.”

In Captain No Beard young readers encounter purpose and a lesson in how hard work and perseverance or determination can help them.

Captain No Beard is a hearty “lad” capable of being a captain though he finds that it is definitely hard work. Valuable lessons in hard work, friendship, and determination are taught via this colorful story.

Colorfully illustrated, this “imaginary tale of a pirate’s life” will surely capture the interest of the young child and young reader just as surely as though they had been captured by Captain No Beard, the pirate. (rev. VHG)

Author Carole Roman “charms with an imaginative, whimsical picture book that will entertain even the oldest pirates." "Named to Kirkus Reviews' Best of 2012"

Each Captain No Beard story is a tale centered around a young boy, Alexander (aka Captain No Beard), and his imaginary pirate ship, The Flying Dragon. His crew is comprised of three stalwart stuffed animals, Mongo the monkey, Linus the lion, and Fribbet the frog. His cousin, Hallie, is the First Mate and together they sail the ocean searching for adventure.

The delightful tales of Captain No Beard and his First Mate, Hallie, is superb for all ages. The stories are well formulated and the illustrations will keep a young audience intrigued. I speak from experience. I read both books to my three year old son and he was absolutely enchanted.

We received this book to give an honest review.
There is just something about Captain No Beard and his crew that we love. K loves pirates and so reading about the adventures that Captain No Beard has is fun for him. I really enjoyed how some pirate talk was in this book, in the others that we have read there haven't been as much besides the word "Aye". In this one we get Shiver me timbers and we find out what that means. And Swab the Deck! I started telling K to swab the deck and he looked me like I was crazy. The illustrations within the story are just so awesomely done and it fits the story perfectly. K loved the whole book and asked me to read it again. I loved the ending and how they saw a 'mermaid' with treasure. Great story to read, I highly recommend this.

"Being a captain is hard work" is the motiff of this brightly illustrated adventure that takes children on a unique journey on the frigate the "Flying Dragon." Captain No Beard takes his friends and neighbors with him: Mongo the monkey, Linus the lion, Fribbit the frog, and first mate and cousin Hallie. A little reader will understand what real responsibility is following the Captain as he gives the orders every day, answers questions that need to be looked up in a pirate dictionary, climbs the mainmast to provide direction, copes with a storm, saves and comforts Hallie, and hosts a cookie-bearing mermaid. This is a perfect bedtime story sure to bring adventurous dreams!

I love pirates, probably even more than my kids do! So we were really excited to read this book. Captain No Beard (I absolutely adore that name) and his crew sail the seas and go on some amazing adventures. This book will really get your kid's imagination going! The illustrations in the book are wonderful. They are bold and colorful.

This is a very fun and imaginative read that I think will appeal to both boys and girls. Definitely check it out, your kids will love it! (I'm sure you will too!)

Shiver Me Timbers! What a fun and delightful book! Fantastic story line, wonderful characters, and morals to boot! I am a intermediate school teacher and I read this out loud to my 4th graders. They were enchanted! Although the target audience is for a much younger crowd, my 9 and 10 year old students enjoyed the book and borrowed it to read to themselves and in groups. The interactions between Captain No Beard and his crew are fun, respectful, and delightful! Can't wait to read more Captain No Beard books!

CAPTAIN NO BEARD: AN IMAGINARY TALE OF A PIRATE'S LIFE by Carole P. Roman is a wonderful Children's Book. First in the "A Captain No Beard story". "Based on Alexander and his cousins playtime". Has beautiful illustrations. What an imaginative way to help teach children, than with a whimsical and magical Captain No Beard, his pirate ship, and the crew of the Flying Dragon. Sail the seven seas with the crew, find a magical and exciting adventure aboard the Flying Dragon. Sure to delight young and old pirates alike. A wonderful way to show children how to play with others, the importance of getting along, and how to have a wondrous adventure. A fun and charming read for young and old alike. As usual I received this book in exchange for an honest review and I will proceed to do that below.

At this point I consider myself pretty well versed with Roman's work. This is the 10th book from her that I've looked at and as usual the book has the vibrancy one has come to expect. Her characters are unique, playful and relatable to young readers.

The only real problem with this book is that it doesn't seem to go anywhere of consequence. Yes, it has a surprise ending but the plot rather fails to do much when considered from beginning to end. The narrative is rather flat by the standards of children's literature.

I suspect that may be, at least in part, because this is the first in the series and primarily presented as introduction. Later books in the series may have more of a point; I think we get the theme pretty firmly from this first offering.

My Thoughts:

My son likes this one. The illustrations really grabbed his attention right away. He loves pirates. He wants to be a good Captain Hook every time him and his friends play what they call Peter Pan and Hook's Voyage.

There is a decent collection of books starring Captain No Beard and his gang. They all help convey to children the importance of friendship, imagination, sharing, and more. I will warn you that this may not work well as a bedtime story, my kid got rather absorbed in the story and was soon acting out the scenes for me on his ship (a bid tote I have).

Recommendation:

This is cute book that I think most pirate loving children will love. It will work well for both a boy or a girl. It is about 40 pages in length with colorful illustrations throughout.

This is another cute series that my daughter and I have been lucky enough to read together. The adventures they go on are amazing and you will find some sort of message in each one of them. The story is written simply enough to where your child can read the book to you or by themselves. With a little imagination and your child jumping onto their bed, just like Alexander (Captain No Beard) and his cousin Hallie (First Mate Hallie), they can be taken on a journey along with their "stuffed" friends.

In this story, they go on a trip and the waters get rough. In order to make sure everything goes well, they have to work together to make sure everyone makes it to safety. Captain No Beard learns that being the main person in charge isn't as easy as he thought it would be.

The graphics are just as amazing as the story. They are so cute. You can really feel what the characters are going through because of the expressions on their faces. They are very detailed. The colors are very vibrant, which will keep your children wanting to read the story.

I really like this series and think that you will too. So, go out and purchase it and add it to your collection.
