UNDER CURRENT CONDITIONS is based on actual events and not only illustrates the benefits of a keen instinct, but also underscores the dire consequences of its failure. Beginning in Boston in 1999, the story chronicles a lucrative business opportunity, but an innocuous change in circumstances leads to kidnapping, FBI stings and a precedent setting international murder trial in 2009.
Born and educated in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Kyle Darcy has called Boston, Massachusetts home for over three decades. Darcy’s debut bestseller, UNDER CURRENT CONDITIONS, was published in 2010 and its prequel UNDER THE IMPRESSION was released in 2020. Thanks to the skill and expertise of the staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Darcy successfully beat an aggressive cancer.
After meeting Kyle and his wife, I was totally revved to read the book and was not disappointed at all. I really enjoyed the book and it was a quick read. I finished the book over the span of two days and when I found the free time I couldn't put the book down. Maybe it's because it takes place in Boston which is near and dear to my heart and maybe because the story is fiction and non-fiction all rolled into one. I really loved the book and can't wait for Kyle's next book to come out.
I live in Boston and I am familiar with the locations where some of the events in the book take place which made it a more interesting read for me. There are several parallel stories running at the same time that all involve the main character, but by the end they are all resolved and tie together nicely. There are some pretty unexpected plot twists which make the book fast paced and a pretty quick read. I thought it was very well written and kept me entertained throughout - a definite recommended read.
I met Kyle last spring at an author's night in Milford MA. After hearing him speak I purchased his book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and knowing that it was based on truths made the business dealings and the players all the more interesting. If you read the book you must invest yourself in the first few chapters as you get to know the characters, but once invested you'll enjoy the book completely.
...I just didn't get this book... The story about the business dealings that went on was interesting, and kept me reading, but there was too little detail in the parallel stories, and I hated the ending, and...nope, not the book for me.
I admit, I had a hard time at first. The chapters are really small, & I found it kind of choppy. Because the chapters are brief, it was a perfect "at work" read & I embraced the format & once I did, really enjoyed it! This book has it all: murder, mystery, sleazy business people, madness & intrigue. The fact that it is set in a familiar locale made it just that much better! Great first novel, Kyle Darcy. Looking forward to the second one!
