A five-star hotel. Two dead bodies. One mysterious concierge. Something doesn't add up, and Southwest Florida's Finest are stumped. But Detective Dan Logan and Sergeant Veronica Menendez have a trickier problem to solve - namely, where to have their wedding reception. When the murder investigation takes them behind the scenes of a luxury hotel designed to serve the particular needs of the superrich, Dan and Roni risk their lives - and their romance - to solve the crime. They uncover a world where the line between privilege and bad behavior is so blurred it can be hard to see who the real victims are. Fans of Carl Hiassen and Randy Wayne White will recognize the darker side of the Sunshine State.
A wonderful freshman novel from Marty. I have the pleasure of knowing this gentle author so I may be more biased in my assessment.
I found the characters a little flat initially but as the story picked up speed, they started to round out nicely. Marty did an admirable job starting and maintaining different storylines merging them together at the end. Though the general plot is predictable and Marty reveals a lot of what seem like critical details early in the plot...he still manages to engage the reader with his sweet characters and keeps you engaged to see if it will turn out like you suspect.
I will say that the book ended in a way that was different than I imagined and I wound up rooting for the unlikely "hero" who is neither heroic nor terribly likeable.
I can't wait to see how Marty's writing matures with his next book...I'm thinking sequel? :)
My one comment is...he needs a better editor and proofreader. I found some grammatical and formatting inconsistencies distracting and I think a bit more attention to detail on the production end would have alleviated this.
