Butchi Babu was the pen name of an eminent Telugu short story writer, novelist and painter. His real name was Sivaraju Venkata Subbarao.
There are fiction and non-fiction books. This belongs to third category, mix of both kinds.Author explained how great is humanity and it can tie all humans together when it is beyond socio, economic and historical factors . Author (Bucchibabu) portrayed hero Dayanidhi (Shortly nidhi)in this story. Nidhi tries to lead a life irrespective of what society is thinking about him. In this process, he tires to understand about himself . story goes through various characters which are in tune(affecting nidhi's life) with Nidhi.By the end Nidhi understands that "at the end, we will be remained with memories and nothing else".Story is gripping not because of it is suspenseful or so, but because I am curious to know philosophical statements he is going to write about. one statement I loved and was repeated twice is " society needs visible indications".How absolutely true it was. I will read it again and again and again... Some of Author thoughts: 1. you will get bored if you know everything about others.you will be able to love only if you dont know fully about other people. 2. we cannot remove dirt (that comes with tradition) by fighting with people. we have to fight with ideals and ethics. 3. A person hates most , if he doesnt know what he wants. 4. Everything is new for women. It seems like they think one and talk something else. 5. if you get money, you could get fame and love.
Chivaraku Migiledi ?…… The answer to this question can be found in the last 2 lines of the book. But to fully understand the value of that answer, you need to travel with Dayanidhi through his life.
The most relevant and the most relatable thing in this book is how strong the society has a hold on the protagonist and how harsh it treats him wherever he goes. And the best thing to learn from him is how kind he was, even to that wicked society to the end.
Feels great to come across such books in Telugu Literature!!!
Didn't quite understand this book. There are lot of musings on varied topics like god, politics, love etc. but I couldn't understand these entirely and their importance in moving the narrative. There is hardly any story and majority of the characters have hurried closures, again with no impact to the story. The protagonist has no real character arc as even in the end he still keeps saying the same random things from the beginning without being proven right. To make things more difficult the copywriter seem to have messed up the punctuations; double quotes are everywhere making it difficult to understand if the sentence is a dialogue or description.
I have read chivaraku migiledi novel penned by Buchibabu in holidays. The novel is really extraordinary. The author portrayed the lead role Dayanidhi's internal struggle very well. He conyed exactly what he wanted to do. All the other roles also penned very well. Definitely this is one of the Masterpieces of Telugu literature. I will read it again when I found time.
many thoughts...oscillating thoughts...the characters doings do not reflect the thoughts mentioned in the beginning of the novel...one time read book...
Like many popular literary classics, this book is highly overrated. Touted to be a magnum opus, this novel is supposed to be an insight into the human psyche, portraying the struggle of a young man - Nidhi, who is haunted by his mother's past. In reality, this is the disappointing story of a deeply flawed, self-absorbed, judgmental, spiteful coward who wallows in self-pity, takes no responsibility for his actions and stumbles through life from one poor decision to another. He doesn't value the people in his life, forms no real bonds or attachments with anyone, displays narcissistic tendencies and victim's complex, and constantly breaks society's norms but yearns to win its approval.
Nidhi's attitude towards women is especially despicable. He has no compunction in disrespecting, punishing and exploiting the women in his life. He judges Komali for her 'lowly' birth, her supposed relations with other men, while he openly lusts for her. He constantly disrespects and disparages her. He sleeps with his married cousin Amrutham, then proceeds to promptly steal from her and absconds. He never consummates his marriage with Indira, punishing her because of ideological differences with his father-in-law. And he does all these deeds with an air of superiority and self-righteousness.
The portrayal of the female characters in the book is weak. None of the women show any conviction or have any self-respect and seem to exist only to serve the protagonist. Komali is shown to be an imbecile, throwing herself at Nidhi at every opportunity. Susheela is portrayed as arrogant, headstrong and entitled, because she is educated. Naturally, Nidhi is repulsed by her and is attracted to the docile and 'homely' Amrutham. We are never shown if and how she handles the consequences of her indiscretion with Nidhi. Characters like Indira and Katyayani have no depth and serve no purpose whatsoever. The male characters are not much better either. Characters like 'Raja' and Jagannatham are plain annoying and cringing.
The final nail in the coffin is the obvious misogyny that runs through out the narrative. The entire book is liberally doused with statements that are deeply prejudiced and derogatory to women. 'Women do not seek love, they seek attention, especially in the presence of other women'. 'A woman's ultimate aim in life is motherhood, she uses a man to achieve this and discards him thereafter'. 'A woman is constantly on the lookout to rob a man of his peace and joy'. The book abounds in such outrageous statements.
To be fair, this book has a lot of philosophical discourse on several subjects, ranging from politics to religion, freedom, nationalism, etc. which could be considered revolutionary for its time. However, these are not woven well into the narrative and hence end up as more of a distraction rather than an invitation to introspect.
All in all, this is a very challenging read, more punishing than enlightening.
I am always surprised by the audacity and bravery of our writers and regret that I have read only in English for so long! This transgressive novel was written at the onset of the Second World War and it seems extraordinary how subversive it is!
It explores how stifling the social expectations can be on a person. Most Indians can relate to this intense questioning of our personal lives by society....
No words to explain how good it felt after reading a book I have been longing to read for quite some time. Though this is the only book written by the less known Telugu writer, his thought process is marvel by itself. Envisioning characters, capturing the subtle sensiblities among the human relations suppressed by the societal pressures is the whole point of the story. Anything more I say would be a spoiler, so enjoy, and cherish the moments.
I was in the process of identifying good books in telugu which are original in nature. I got few and one is this. We all fly in fantasies and social life forgetting our own life interests. The author Butchi Babu was bold enough to pick up the girl from a prostitution house and glorify male and female relationship irrespective of the profession or back ground. Story ends where it starts with several storms and hardships in between.
Story about a free spirited person named 'Nidhi'. He doesn't live by society norms usually leads his life in his own way. Book talks about various levels of social, economical, political aspects of the society. By the end of it, Nidhi questions himself about the world's existence and he realizes it's just living in the moment and drinking those experiences. Important read!!
Book deals with so many aspects of life including love,lust, society, caste, adultery, family etc etc even with demographical division between 2 regions with social commentary ,must read !!
Though this book was written 50 years ago. We still have the same mentality that we do things for society but not for self. I was personally connected to lot situations the protagonist faced in this story. The author perfectly penned human emotions and the reactions.
Currently going through the last chapter and i'm worried that a wonderful journey came to end. Let me tell you this is groundbreaking literature in many ways the impact it leaves on your mind is unforgettable and still relevant to modern society.
I have no words to explain. But, by reading this book, I am glad to have Telugu as my mother tongue without which I would not have been able to read this great book is available at chirukaanuka .com
This book cannot be seen just as a novel …The philosophy of author and the questions he imposes on us left me awestruck. The answer for what will stay with us at the end of life is found in the last 2 lines of this book.
