John Constantine was missing for years-and in that time, England needed a mystical protector, a guardian at the gates. Heroically, the young man known as Tommy Willowtree stepped into the breach! This cosmically attuned mage has held evil at bay with the force of his positive white magic, unlocking a new era of peace for the citizens of London. He is a gentleman, a scholar, a clean-living, vegan acolyte of love. So naturally, John Constantine hates his effing guts. And now they have to team up. Great.
Although I’m kinda (read: majorly) concerned neither the ass or the nice guy went out of their way to help the little girl who got hexed, this was a strong issue. I’m glad Constantine got taken down a peg or two trying to one-up Willowtree as well.
Another great Constantine story begins (continues?) this issue. Spurrier keeps proving he knows this character and his world so well. Great to see a return to the old costume, and John getting annoyed by his opposite is great stuff. This would have been another 5 star issue for me, but the interior art really put me off. It just doesn't suit gritty and dirty Hellblazer horror style. It's too cartoony, giving more of a Real Ghostbusters vibe.
Tommy Willowtree is super annoying. Well done. Can’t wait to see what the Magelord of all England gets up to next... The vibe in this book reminded me of the recent Ms Marvel series, in a weird, but maybe cool way. We’ll see.
