Infinite Crisis #1

Infinite Crisis: Part 1

Rate this book
INFINITE CRISIS is the largest and most complicated story in the history of comics. It led to the equally long 52, which segued into the current year-long story, COUNTDOWN. Comic fans are thrilled to read such a complex, all-consuming story, which involves hundreds of characters. So what could be better? This full-cast production of INFINITE CRISIS, featuring dozens of actors performing as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and a host of heroes and villains. Richard Rohan directs and stars in Part One of this audio extravaganza. Perhaps it’s a bit heavy on the audio special effects, which force the actors to compete with the soundtrack. Still the story is compelling—even without the pictures.

Trying to read the Infinite Crisis comics can get a bit confusing, but this feels like it gathers whatever tie-in events might be necessary for the story, as there are bits here that I didn't catch when reading the main comics. This adaptation for sure gets through the first three issues of the Infinite Crisis miniseries, with maybe a bit of change. It really elevates the material not just because you get internal thoughts for the characters, but also because in Graphic Audio you get good voice acting and really epic music. The Superman theme feels inspired by the classic John Williams theme without sounding like a carbon copy. Action sequences and multiverse stuff that can feel like a mess on the page feel more clear in this format.

Having recently reread the 7 issue mini-series, hearing it in full-blown awesomeness is...wow. There's a narrator, multiple heroic voices, and lots of FX sounds...explosions, creepy music, and much more. Twice I've teared up because even though I knew what was coming...just hearing it gives it such another depth.

Superheroes around the world are facing three threats; one from a group of supervillians who have banded together and led by Lex Luther; the second threat is from an advance security system created by Batman to watch other superheroes. The system eventually began thinking on its own coming up with its own agenda, altering human dna and changing them into unthinking cybernetic warriors, whose sole role is to hunt down and destroy super powered beings; the threat comes from an insane supernatural being called the Spectre, his goal is to destroy all magic. On top of all this danger, the three founding members of the Justice League (Superman, Wonder Woman & Batman) have personal grudges against one another and will no longer fight as a team.

With a full cast and super sound effects, the audio production was excellent. I could picture all the action and felt the emotional turmoil of the characters. There was an underwater fight scene where the voices were a little annoying but it wasn't enough to distract from the story telling. I recommend this book.

Once again Graphic Audio impressed me with a great transformation of a graphic novel into an audiobook. Sound effects, a full cast, and high production quality make this a terrific listening experience.

Infinite Crisis is a giant story involving all the superheroes of the DC universe - and also a shakeup/reboot of the DC comics lines. I found the story harder to get into than 52 (which actually comes later in the story arc, but which I listened to first). So much of part 1's six discs are devoted to introducing lesser-known DC heroes and showing brief fight scenes between them and various supervillains that it's hard to tell where the story might be going until almost the end of this audiobook. Still, by the end I was ready to get into part 2.

I really appreciate the narrated backstories for so many of the heroes and villains- it makes it seem a little stilted sometimes, but it's a lot less confusing than reading the comic with no explanations of characters and previous events. The sounds effects are pretty cool, too, if a little loud.

After reading the Crisis series I can see how discombobulated the DC universe is with all the infinite Earths, so much so that it makes reading this mashup story unbearable. I had hopes I would be entertained by this but only found myself frustrated by the entire series.
