I don't know what took me so long to read this book. Let me clarify -- reading the book didn't take me very long--once I started it I was hooked. But getting around to reading it was another story. Originally published in 1924, Forster tells a familiar story of clashing cultures large and small--Indian and English; Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, agnostic, and Muslim;, man and woman;, bureaucrats and servants;, and more. Set in the mythical town of Chandrapore, the novel evokes the land, the people, and the politics of the early 20th century and yet remains relevant to today's world of ethnic and tribal wars. Presented by a remarkably insightful (and unnamed) narrator, Forster depicts a rich yet tattered tapestry woven from history, geography, culture and psychology,
