Lent for Everyone: Luke, Year C provides readers with an inspirational guide through the Lenten season, from Ash Wednesday through the week after Easter. Popular biblical scholar and author N. T. Wright provides his own Scripture translation, brief reflection, and a prayer for each of the days of the season, helping readers ponder how the text is relevant to their own lives today. By the end of the book readers will have been through the entirety of Luke, along with Psalm readings for each Sunday. Suitable for both individual and group study and reflection, Wright's Lenten devotional will help you make Luke's gospel your own, thoughtfully and prayerfully, and your journey through Lent a period of rich discovery and growth.
This is easily a 4-5 star book. Daily readings from the Gospel of Luke for the Lenten season along with Wright's usual insightful comment. I read this for the second time and liked it again! For what it is as a seasonal devotional, I can't see how it could be any better.
Lent for Everyone is a compilation of meditations/commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew. N.T. Wright, who is a well respected theologian and scholar of Paul's writings, has stepped out of his strictly scholarly role to produce a very accessible guide to scriptural readings for the season of Lent. Readings from the Gospel of Matthew are followed by short commentaries on the selection. Each of the commentaries is thematically linked to Jesus' passion, death, and resurrection. Wright provides cultural and historical background to the biblical events and feasts referenced in the readings to enhance the reader's understanding and appreciation of the passage being considered.
Sundays, which have traditionally not been counted as days of Lent, are celebrated with a commentary on one of the Psalms. The psalms provide an emotional and psychological break from the increased foreboding that builds within the structure of the readings.
Wright designed the book so that a reader, studying one meditation every day of Lent and each day of Easter week, will have read the whole Gospel of Matthew by the end of the Lenten/Easter season. Experiencing Lent for Everyone as N.T. Wright designed it, provides the reader with a guide to entering into the Lenten season deliberately and appreciatively. Lent for Everyone is enthusiastically recommended for the "everyone" mentioned in the title.
I am posting on this even in the midst of Lent so that some might benefit from this great resource. I find most devotionals pretty schmaltzy. Not so this work by noted New Testament scholar N.T. Wright. The book follows readings in Luke and Wright's commentaries a brief exposition of the text that really does comment on the text rather than use it as a springboard for some "inspiring thoughts". He concludes each day with a "Today" section that gives relevant and sometimes pointed direction for reflection, prayer and action based on the text of the day.
Was recommended this book for Lent by a friend and I have really enjoyed the journey! It’s been great each day to simply spend 10 minutes reading, thinking and praying through the Gospel of Luke. Wright’s style of writing in this book is very engaging, and it puts you right in the middle of the stories as they happen - it really grips your imagination and lets you see what’s going on from a different perspective. Definitely would recommend to everyone for Lent 2020, and I’m excited to do it again... only this time with Wright’s Lent Year A book that goes through Matthew!
Wright transports the reader into the journeys of Jesus and His followers in the events leading up to the Passion, and gives us eyes to see and ears to hear what God was doing in our shared history through a group of misfits and failures who knew Jesus was their only hope. I thoroughly enjoy Wright’s writings and being able to translate culture and history for anyone today to understand the importance of Biblical narratives.
As always appreciate NT Wright devotionals. Accessible yet profound. Enjoyed that the readings extended a week into Eastertide. Helped me to more fully think about what happens on Monday and following.
This is the second time I used this book for Lenten meditation. I did enjoy, again, the study in Luke’s gospel into the beginning of Acts. May continue and do a study of Acts
Another excellent Wright devotional. This one was simpler in some ways than some of the other "For everyone" series, but still found a way to get me thinking every time. I often learned new things, and the translation was very fresh. There were several times where I realized how distinct Luke's account is compared to John (which I read through carefully last year) or Mark's (which is so direct; Jesus is always doing everything "immediately" for Mark). We plan to read Jesus through Middle Eastern Eyes next, which I believe draws a lot from Luke, so that should be a good follow up to this one.
I would highly recommend this one to everyone, all of his Lenten devotionals, and all of his "For Everyone" series.
Wonderful Lent devotional; I'll be returning to the series for next Lent. I love Wright's work - always have - and this book is no exception. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a devotional for Lent season that challenges you to rethink your approach to Christianity and others.
Not the 'end all be all' of one's reflection time/devotional life, but a fantastic appetizer for it. Wright has an uncanny ability to take the words we are so familiar with, and bring a fresh perspective to it.
This was my first NT Wright book. This simple daily devotional takes you through Luke and into Acts the week after Easter. Every day there's a reading, a section where you try to insert yourself into the text, and a short prayer. Wholeheartedly recommended.
One of the best Lenten readings I've gone through during the season. N.T. Wright is a brilliant writer, and the Spirit is shown so well through his compassionate text.
As in all his works, N.T. Wright knows the text and has deep insight into practical, daily application. No syrup here; good substance. Very helpful on my Lenten journey this year.
A wonderfully thought-provoking and Biblical devotional covering the Gospel of Luke and the first few chapters of Acts, written in N.T. Wright's down-to-earth conversational style.
Good Lenten devotional, but I prefer devotionals that are encourage a profound spirituality. This is good for younger families or for giving someone exploring the Christian faith.
