Recovering alcoholic. Hockey player. Unforeseen heartbreak. Welcome to the mess that is Keegan Braatan’s life.
Marketing consultant. Newly single. Canceled wedding. Nour Price’s life isn’t anything to be envious of.
After yet another mishap, Keegan is forced to cozy up to a sober companion or enter rehab. It makes perfect sense to allow the beautiful Nour to keep him level headed since he personally can’t seem to hold his life together.
The catch? How can Nour help Keegan stay on the straight and narrow when she can’t seem to get her own life together.
Guarded hearts, past still filtering into the present and an undeniable attraction make for a disastrous combination and a beautiful surprise.
4.5 ⭐️ - I really liked this story a lot! A black male hockey player, who has a history of alcoholism, and a quick temper is in need of a sober companion. Who better to help than Nour, who is a caring person at heart. She is even tempered and genuinely cared about Keegan's wellbeing. Both characters had their past traumas in relationships and didn't expect to fall for each other. I loved their chemistry and the way they protected each other. The author did a good job showing their triumphs and hardships on page. I loved how vulnerable both characters were. I would recommend.
The start of this book had me hooked. It was exciting and refreshing and dull of life. And then the rug was pulled out from under Nour, and the reader(me) as well. Meeting and getting to know Keegan was different for me. I liked him. I felt for him and then I despised him. I didn't get warm and fuzzies from him because to me, he felt very manipulative. It felt like he felt owed grace and understanding because of his grief. But as I continued on the journey, I realized he deserved the grace and understanding and he really was a good man and he cared for Nour more than I thought.
This was nice. Pacing wise it got a little slow at times, especially once they became official. Stories heavy on grief aren’t a theme I enjoy reading for a lot of reasons so this was an ok read but not an enjoyable one. It also felt like the story was way more about Keegan, we never really got to see any part of Nour’s healing, even her closure was through Keegan. But I this is any author I’m starting to like and I wanted to explore her catalog more.
This was my first time reading this author and now I want to binge read her whole catalog. Nour and Keegan needed each other for different reasons. I would recommend this book.
Now I really loved how from the start Nour and Keegan had a connection, the way their friendship blossomed was great! They we're each others peace. Once they made things more official I was all in but somewhere along the line I started to feel like Nour deserved better. I can't lie rip to her but I was tired of hearing about Zola!! 🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️ That stunt he pulled in the backseat was exactly what Nour said it was, he used her! The way he kept trying to apologize to zolas brother for being with Nour was annoying me. The way he made sure to take it upon himself to help Nour rid herself of all of funky ol Marcels things but was still holding on to some damn trinkets 🙄🙄 Honestly he needed to move on from Zola because that was what was making him drink! Nour wasn't just his sober companion, she was his grief companion as well.
I really enjoyed this book. Keegan used alcohol to cope with the loss of a loved one and after another drunken incident his team decided he was in need of a sober companion which he offered to Nour and she took the job. The two of them developed a friendship that blossomed into a relationship. I was excited for them and their future but slightly disappointed that Keegan couldn’t let Zola go. Even down to the end of the book he was still feeling away about her. The rehabilitation center was named after her and I didn’t get that because she wasn’t a recovering addict and alcoholism is not what took her life so why name the center after her!?! Why not name it after himself he was the one struggling with his sobriety. I get that she was his first love but what about your new love, the woman you proposed marriage to!? I would feel slighted if I was Nour. It is okay to mourn the loss of the one you loved but at some point you have to let go so you can be free to love who’s right in front of you. No woman wants to nor should they have to compete with the memory of a deceased first love.
Marcel was trying his best to hold on to Nour. Keegan wasn't going for that though. I don't care what no one thinks Keegan is in need of some therapy to handle his grief and his drinking. Nour friends were pushing her to take the job and Nicky was pushing her to get with him because she saw the chemistry between them. Raden kept it real with Keegan. He didn't pacify him like Dexter.
Keegan and Nour were such an expected couple. I was first introduced to this author under her pen name ML Bash. All the stories under that name have been hella spicy.
So, imagine my surprise when I switch over to her Kizzie Kollins persona and find that it's a shit ton softer, tame, and vanilla. At least in this book. BUT and it's a big BUT, the level of emotion and complexity that was put into these characters and their story was next level.
Nour is incredibly self-aware, emotionally mature, kind, and stands on business. After recognizing herself sabotaging behavior and seeking counseling she had made the decision to remain celibate. THIS decision while discussed is NOT a major factor in this story. It's not something she or the other party goes back and forth on.
There is no should we, shouldn't we, bullshit. It's a choice she made, a boundary that was set, and it's respected. What I really liked is due to this decision of no sex, we get a slow burn that shows us intimacy and physical touch outside of the actual act of sex which I really enjoyed.
Keegan's backstory caught me off guard. I was not expecting his heartbreak to be as heavy as it was. I hurt for him, and it gave me so much introspective as to why he turned to alcohol and struggled.
I devoured this story in one sitting and look forward to reading the rest of the books under this pen name.
This was a cute story. Keegan was having a hard time coping with a past trauma and turned to alcohol to help numb the pain. Nour fresh out of a relationship work with Keegan to help curb his drinking. It was a little slow in developing a relationship between the two. 70 % in the story is the is where it starts to bloom. Although, they shared intimate moments I didn’t feel the passion/desire for one another. I see the love they shared with each other. This is 3.5⭐️
