During Lent we all need to come to terms with our brokenness and selfishness and turn back to God.
Take a chance this Lent to go deeper, ask questions, have more space, take more time.
“‘And yet even now,’ says the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart . . .’” Joel 2:12
Unfortunately, the Lenten season often gets reduced to the question, “What are you giving up for Lent?” The real question of the Lenten season is, “How will I repent and turn back to God with all my heart?” This begs an even deeper “Where in my life have I gotten away from God, and what are the disciplines that will enable me to find my way back?”

Lent is a 40 day chance to try something different. Mirroring the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert, and sometimes known as 'the sad springtime of the church' (Lent is an old English word for Spring), it's a chance to take time out, learn more about praying or read a book, take up something new, or give up something you think distracts you from a deeper appreciation of life's gifts and challenges. There are lots of different ways to keep Lent, the most important thing is that this time becomes a time of drawing closer to God.

Lent is a moment when the inner becomes outer. Lent gives us another opportunity to re-align ourselves with the purposes of God. To be less pre-occupied with our own needs and concerns. To make room in our hearts for others – especially those less fortunate than we are. We remember the poor, the homeless and the vulnerable. Lent is about listening to God. To share the quiet joy of his love, be renewed in our longing to do good and change our community.

Lent is a season that reminds us to repent and get our lives rebalanced, our priorities straight, and our hearts clean.
Lent is a season of hope and with ashes on our foreheads and hope in our hearts, we go forth to serve.
Lent is a time when we are called to repent and turn our hearts toward God. It is a time to push away distractions and focus even more on our relationship with God.
Lent is a time to re-focus and to re-enter a place of truth. It is here where we find our true identity.
Lent is a time of turnings. A time when we turn inwards and examine our lives; a time when we turn from the depth of winter to waiting for Easter. A time when we choose to turn away from sin and towards new life.

This isn’t something we do on our own. Christians all over the world use this time as a line in the sand, a yearly reminder of both our frailty, and God’s grace. The fact we observe Lent together, rather than on our own, reminds us it isn’t just our personal lives that need transforming, but that of our communities, countries, and entire world. During Lent, we lament the brokenness of the whole world, its sin, inequality, and injustice, and we long for God’s intervention to come and teach us what justice, peace and freedom truly look like. Lenten practices to renovate our interior lives.

Lord in your mercy hear me and accept my Lenten discipline, and when I fall by my weakness, raise me up by your unfailing mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
