Excellent beginner book! It was filled with a lot of new vocabulary for me but did great teaching me what it all meant without feeling overwhelmed and it inspired me to learn more about gems which was not a big interest before reading this book.

A good overview of gemstones, from their historical significance to mining procedures to acquisition and cutting. While it does go into some scientific detail regarding the geology of gemstones, the reader won't need much of a scientific background to understand it. The book is filled with incredible pictures, and it's completely understandable if you want to check it out just to ooh and aah over all the pretty shiny things.
