"Amanda" by Elena Carter

🫶🏼If you're looking for a brilliant, deep and wise short story, "Amanda" is what you need.

🐱The Plot: We follow a touching story from a cat's perspective. Cat Max lives happily with his charming owner Amanda. The little feline adores his owner and feels every single vibe of her human soul perfectly. Their life together is cloudless. None of them expects that a devastating storm is coming. Unfortunately, it comes unexpectedly, crushing into pieces the happy bubble they live in.

🐱The Writing Style: This short story is one of those that will leave a deep trace in my bookish soul. This short story is one of those that is much deeper than it might seem at first sight. This short story is a one-sitting read, but it is also one of those stories that I will talk about with my kids and friends. I would probably compare "Amanda" to one of those memorable, wise, illuminating, and heart-squeezing stories by O. Henry. It is written at a fast pace, so I read it quickly, then I was sitting and thinking of it over and over again pretty long. It is short but as deep as a great wise story can be deep. A few chapters from the cat's life were depicted so vividly that I watched it glued to the imaginable screen until it went dark. Then I closed my eyes, sobbed, and felt the cat's heart beating in unison with the raindrops drumming nearby. "Amanda" is one of those short stories that I call a literary masterpiece.

🐱The Characters: Here come deafening applauses to the incredibly talented Elena Carter. In my humble opinion, creating such characters that became real for me from the first lines requires a true gift. Both humans and the cat are portrayed formidably and masterfully. I know what and how it feels to write from a perspective of a cat, and I'm more than sure that only a writer, who is not only an animal lover, but has a piece of a cat's soul in his/her own, can create such a character. Because this piece installs a sort of bridge between a writer's soul and an animal one, this invisible bridge helps to understand the deepest tortures and sacred feelings of our four-legged friends.

💙Would I read other books by this author: Sure!

🤩My humble rating is: 5.5/5

🫶🏼P.S. I gave my highest humble rating to this story just because it felt perfect for me in all aspects – plot, characters, writing style, and morals. It is very short, but at the same time, an image of the main character – cat Max – is inscribed in my memory. Cats can leave pretty deep and painful scratches on human skin, but people can leave no less deep scratches in a cat's soul that will keep bleeding till the last breath of a poor animal.

🥹I hope you'll enjoy reading this touching, harrowing, and wise story as much as I did!

"Amanda" is a beautiful short story that explores the depths of friendship, love, and sacrifice. Even though the story is brief, the message is powerful and readers will find themselves connecting deeply with narrator, Max.

At the same time, there is a definite element of intrigue (Who is Max, really? What is the relationship between Max and Amanda?) that will keep readers guessing until the end.

I didn't want this story to end. Then, I wanted a different ending for the characters. However, the heartbreak I felt at the end of the story speaks volumes about what author Elena Carter was able to accomplish in this simple short story. Brilliantly done!

This story carries such an important message and explores themes such as friendship and love. While it's short, it definitely packs a punch. Which makes this a perfect read in between bigger books or when you don't feel like commiting a bigger story for now. Definitely recommend.

This story packs a punch in such few words. Worth every minute of my time just for that ending. If you need a fast little read in-between larger books and love a good twist, pick this baby up!
