Unrecognised states remain subject to many myths and simplifications. Drawing on a number of contemporary and historical cases, this timely new book examines their origins, the factors that enable them to survive and explores their likely future trajectories.
In 2017 I started this and with Nagorno Karabackh in the news in 2020, I decided to finish the last 40 pages. And there is enough in the book to help understand why these are complicated settings in the international context, and also how these unrecognised states can struggle to survive. Interesting to read but also a little long winded at times.
This book is awesome. It provides a different perspective to examine the issue in the 21st century. In particular, it offers some insights into few countries that are unrecognized in the past and still struggling up to date.
