My least favorite Lethem thus far, and I still gave it four stars. I'm a sucker for his style and vocabulary, even at its most pretentious. Dissident Gardens is objectively so beautifully and elegantly written, but it's far higher on its own supply than his other works. Each of the characters is a bit of a try-hard, and all are cemented in too believable a reality to truly enjoy and get lost in. I prefer Lethem when he's weird and timeless. And when he comes up with an actual plot.
