There's a very fine line between a mainstream book that's very well researched and informative and an academic text that turns readers away because it's full of information but lacks an engaging prose. Bushido: Legacies of the Japanese Tattoo is a beautifully illustrated tome that manages to walk that line. The Kitamuras researched the history of tattooing in the country that has become synonymous with superb skin art, but the way they present it to readers is more akin to an entertaining magazine article than a history book.

A nice deep dive into Japanese Tattoos, most specifically the bonds between tattoos and Bushido as well as ties within Tattoo families in Japan. Of course Horiyoshi 3 is a focus and yet the information is fresh and served to give me an even deeper respect for the man. There is a great collection of full bodysuit images which serve as great reference for composition and colour choices. At the back of the book is also an excellent set of diagrams depicting different styles of bodysuit.

Impressive book. For the most part the quality of the pictures is good, excepting a couple blurry frames. The text is maybe a little too referential towards Horiyoshi III, but I guess if you were writing a book on what is ostentensibly your boss it may get a bit heavy handed as well.
But, if you love technique, history, and traditional japanese tattoos the above listed faults are merely quibbles. Plus the book is nice and big, paperback, so it feels good in your hand while you're examining the images.

Great discussion of Japanese style tattooing by someone who is part of the world and is not just looking in on it for a book.

Beautiful pages, although I hoped the book would provide more information about the history of that specific art, with more focus on the meaning of the elements and colors of the tattoos, or even the legends that are associated with them.
Of course, I am glad to have bought the work, but honestly expected more of it.
