When an EMP strike plunges the nation into darkness, John Castillo and his wife Tamin, who dedicated their life to disaster preparedness, face their most dangerous crisis. Stranded at their homestead in the hills, they must navigate the treacherous aftermath of the disaster while contending with the chilling realization that trust is the rarest and most valuable currency in this new world. As they confront unexpected threats lurking within their sanctuary, John and Tasha will be pushed to their limits, grappling with the grim reality that only one may survive this harrowing ordeal.
This was a fairly standard plot of an EMP attack with family members scattered and trying to get to safety. Apparently, the only people that were in Florida for this event were the family and associates, nasty mafia-like braggarts and groups of hillbilly-gangs who were incredibly one-dimensionally vile. I get bad people would be trying to capitalize but there would be a lot of normal folks and who wants to build a stronghold in the swamp at the edge of the Everglades? The dialogue with most characters, particularly the hillbillies was cliché for the most part. The main characters who had prepared their homestead etc, kept forgetting to keep their firearm handy and clearly never got the memo that they should wear seatbelts when speeding along in a car. The serendipity that they encountered was just not believable. Cars and trucks that ran after the EMP were just right there and they were able to find missing members just wandering on the road. There is no way to believe that a man could be propelled through a windshield at high-speed, have one eye completely ripped out and the other badly damaged, yet did not sustain catastrophic head, neck or other injuries. After all of this, it ends very quickly and with all being safe and well on the homestead. Nope.
This could have been a very good book. Unfortunately, much of the action was cartoonish, superhero-like material. You’d almost think the protagonists were members of the Justice League. And if you don’t like vulgar language - lots of it - steer clear.
The three simultaneous stories tied together well. Having lived in the Florida Keys, visited Everglades National Park and experienced a hurricane, the geographical and environmental facts made this story amazingly interesting. It would be sheer folly in today's world not to be aware of the possibility of an.EMP. A great read even for a romance enthusiast.
I just bought this book today and read the entire story. It was thrilling and I could not put it down. I hope the author revisits the characters and storyline in the future. I was throughly entertained.
This is a very exciting read. Keeps you on your toes. There are quite a few errors throughout the book. I have noticed this more and more. The books are not being proofed as well as in the past
I truly enjoy this book ,its one that you want to have a sequel. It had lots of action and it kept you turning pages way in the night . very well written. Keep them coming !!!
This was definitely a fast-paced book about three different groups of people from somewhat the same family who had to make their way back to the homestead after an EMF attack that rendered our technology useless.
Absolutely grabs you and doesn't let go from page one till the end. This is the second of Mr. Walker's stories I've read and I can't wait to find another. Thank you!
