Illus. in full color. Five fishermen go out in a boat and think that only four come back, until they realize the silly counting mistake they have made.
Five fishermen friends go down to the river to catch fish. They all do rather well at catching fish, but their counting skills could use some work. First graders are able to practice their counting skills while working on their reading skills at the same time.
Here is a funny, very easy read for kids who are just starting to read. The five fishermen who went down to the dock decided to count each other to make sure nobody was missing, but whoever was counting kept forgetting to count themselves.
This book is also a good math/reading book for Kindergarten. It is a fun and simple book for children to read by having them practice couting up and back one through five. It is good practice as the group of five men will lose one, then gain one, then lose two, etc. It makes them think and really try to remember the reading as they are going through so that they can keep up with the number of men. It would also be a good sequencing activity during reading in which you could integrate math (counting) into that lesson.

My Review: This was a great book! Not only is it perfect for beginning readers but also for counting! I think Munchkin will really enjoy this one when he is ready to read. It combines simple words with a silly story that will capture any child's attention.
This is an appropriate book for students in kindergarten or first grade. This book would lead into a counting lesson. We would discuss the importance of accurate counting, because sometimes 1 can make all the difference. The students would better understanding how counting is used in every day environments.
Five Silly Fishermen who love to count, one goes missing and they are afraid he drowned. They met a little girl who is on her way fishing to. She tells them if she finds their friend that she gets all the fish they caught. Such a cute book and a fun read with great pictures.
The book Five Silly Fishermen by Roberta Edwards serves as a good resource for lessons on basic addition. The book can also be used for counting. The book can also be used for lessons on verbs. This book can be used in Pre-K to 2 grade classrooms.
I read this story with some of my first graders, and they loved counting along with me in the story and deciding why there were only four fisherman instead of five. I think this story is a great intro to simple counting!
