My personal reason for buying this textbook was twofold: One was because I was traveling to China, and two, because I believe trying to speak another language is the first step in understanding another's culture. Anyone interested in this approach should be heavily involved in a classroom situation. You cannot do it on your own since the Chinese language is highly tonal-inflection oriented. One misapplied inflection can cause you to call your mother a piece of rope. And we all know, regardless of culture, where that would lead. There are multiple other short books that help the traveler get by. This is meant for serious classroom application.
