Icelandic poetry from a thousand years ago. It feels very far-off and foreign, except for names and terms popping up now and then that are suddenly familiar from Tolkien and Lord of the Rings. Auden's contribution is to render the stress-based alliterative verse forms in a supple modern English vernacular.
