This book is beautifully layered for early readers. It can be used to teach the foundations of research and non-fiction texts with its table of contents and glossary. For younger kids with shorter attention spans, you can read just the bolded text. For more engaged and older students, you can read the short paragraph on each pair of pages. And, the photographs are wonderful -- close-up, detailed, and carefully related to the corresponding text. This is a GREAT beginning non-fiction text. (I use it with my classroom of 2-5 year olds.)
Nonfiction/Twin Text #2 I liked this book because Nebraska is known for their corn. I think that this would be a great book for young students who want to learn more about food that is harvested in Nebraska, especially corn. This book had a bright cover and made reading interesting with the text in bold. I connected this book to "Strega Nona's Harvest" by Tomie dePaola. I think that these two connect because they are both about harvesting. Students learn a life lesson by reading the fiction book by dePaola but learn a agricultural lesson with the nonfiction book. They can connect these books because they both involve the processes it takes to have a garden/harvest food.
