3/18/2018 ~~ A comprehensive overview of the geography, history, government, environment, people, and lifestyles of Kenya; good for 6th - 8th graders, though accessible and interesting for 5th grade readers as well. However, it would tend to be used more for research than for recreational reading. That said, in this day and age, investing in electronic resources, rather than print books makes more sense.
I reviewed this edition (2014) and the same book from 2004 to see how the authors updated the book. Initially, I was struck that the page numbers in both tables of contents were nearly identical (i.e. each section had the same title, and each started on the same page.) There was updated information and deletion of references to outdated surveys. Likewise, the newer version had more text, accomplished by eliminating photos. Though the layout is attractive, I found the loss of photos to be unfortunate.
* I would like someone from Kenya to read the book and tell me what stereotypes it may convey and what might be left out.
* Collection Development work for my preK-5th grade school library * So many thanks to my local public library system, the Indianapolis Public Library, for investing in their print collection of juvenile nonfiction. I could not do the collection development for my elementary library without the access their collection gives me to actually READ books before ordering them. * I am not putting a date read for this book, because I didn't read it all the way through, and don't want GoodReads to count it for my reading challenge.
I wish it had devoted more than a weak paragraph on circumcision and a scattered sentences here or there on women's issues/gender inequality. However, it covered a lot of topics and I learned a lot.
