I very much enjoyed this. Much of this is well before my life, but I’m very familiar with Julia Child, and some famous books like Fannie Farmer and Joy of Cooking. I wish the book did a better job with detailing how Americans ate before this period to contrast with changes that took place. The numerous stories about meals were great. Lots of recipes. My main disappointment with the book is the endless introductions of people who popped into and out of his life. I found it too dense to keep track of.

James Beard is my all time favorite chef. As Julia Child - and others - have said, "In the beginning there was James Beard" When I found this book at the used book store and could not put is down. This book tells his life store, born to a mother how was a gifted hotelier and cook in Portland, Oregen. On to his living in France and becoming a world renowned chef. You will also find some outstanding recipes. This book started my collection of James Beard cook books.

A man who was larger than life in every way - a bit of a bully, used to getting his own way - forgiven for his many culinary contributions. A sad way to end his life, in poor health and starving for friendship.
