Shinjuku at night is not a safe place. Therefore, young college hopeful Tomoe Tatsumi lucks out by bumping into Mitsugu Kurokawa, a white-collar worker with a heart of gold. Charmed by Tatsumi's naïvete, Kurokawa actually finds himself being more generous than usual.

In the course of helping Tomoe-kun find a place to live in Tokyo, Kurokawa offers to rent out his extra room. And thus, the two of them come to live together... but it's not the situation that Kurokawa had hoped it would be!

How long can Kurokawa keep from betraying Tatsumi's trust? Does Tatsumi's paranoid older brother really consider murder a viable option? The answers, and so-much more, come out in this first volume of Hinako Takanaga's boys love comedy!

About the author

Takanaga Hinako (高永ひなこ) is a Japanese author of Boys' Love manga.
She has also provided illustrations for several BL light novels by other authors, including The Guilty by Katsura Izumi. Her first manga story, 合格祈願 (Goukaku kigan, Prayers for a passing grade?), was published by Hanamaru Comics in 1997; it was later reworked as the first chapter of Challengers. Most of her works have been translated into foreign languages. She was a guest at YaoiCon 2007, invited by Juné, the US publishers of her popular series Little Butterfly.
When not making Boys' Love manga, she spends her time collecting Wallace & Gromit merchandise and playing Final Fantasy. Takanaga doesn’t like beer and people who are ignorant.

She comments that her biggest influence on her art and writing-style was KOUGA Yun, a famous shoujo manga artist whose works she read as a teenager.

E’ andata così. Mi trovavo casualmente in una nota fumetteria della mia città e mi è improvvisamente venuta voglia di scoprire questi famosi Manga. Poi, siccome le idee del lettore (specialmente le idee nuove intese come voglie improvvise di sperimentare “quel” libro, “quel genere”) sono come il buon vino, cioè invecchiando migliorano ancora, ecco che mi sono lasciata girare in testa questa voce per qualche ora, fino a essere sicura di quel che volevo. Così, dopo un po’, sono entrata in una libreria e l’ho fatta finalmente e felicemente tacere. Solo che dei Manga non sapevo (e ancora non so) praticamente nulla, se non il fatto che, al contrario di un albo di fumetti cui siamo abituati, si leggono dal fondo all’inizio e dalla pagina di destra a quella di sinistra. Solo quello. Per il resto, ho dato per scontato che fossero, in tematiche e non, un po’ come le Graphic Novels. E così, sono andata completamente alla cieca, e, avvicinatomi allo scaffale dei Manga, ho pescato il primo (contrassegnato con “Vol. 1”) che mi ispirava, attratta dal bel disegno di copertina, raffigurante quelli che pensavo fossero un bellissimo ragazzo e una bellissima ragazza abbracciati. Non è stato proprio così, poiché ho scoperto che i protagonisti sono due maschi, ma non importa. La storia di “Challengers” di Hinako Takanaga è semplice e leggera: il giovane Tatsumi arriva a Tokyo per studiare ingegneria all’Università, e conosce Kurokawa, giovane uomo in carriera, che si invaghisce di lui e lo ospita a casa sua. Peccato che Tastumi, ingenuo e impacciato, fatichi a capire (o forse non vuole capire) i sentimenti di Kurokawa, che a sua volta fatica a rivelare apertamente (e ad accettare) la sua omosessualità. Nel mezzo si mettono poi il fratello maggiore di Tastumi, autoritario e iper-protettivo, e un turista inglese che a sua volta, come Kurokawa, si invaghisce di Tatsumi. Insomma, una simpatica commedia sentimentale tutta al maschile. Non credo di aver beccato qualcosa del mio genere, comunque, mi è piaciuta molto la copertina, mi sono piaciuti molto i disegni (per quanto, a dirla tutta, i personaggi si somiglino tutti un po’), mi è piaciuta la volontà di trattare, tramite disegno, in maniera ironica, quasi buffa, un tema come l’accettazione della diversità. E la sensazione è proprio quella di trovarsi in un cartone animato, con risvolti tragicomici. Da lettrice, nell’insieme, la storia (che tra l’altro, mi pare di capire, non è finita) mi ha detto tutto e nulla. Tuttavia, non sapendo nulla dei Manga e non sapendo cosa effettivamente (tra autrice, genere e serie) sono andata a pescare, questa volta voglio fare una cosa che solitamente, commentando le mie letture sui, non faccio mai: voglio astenermi dall’assegnare stelline. Non ho termini di paragone con nulla fra le mie letture passate, e non voglio né elogiare, né distruggere né assegnare una banale sufficienza a questo mio primo incontro. Di certo c’è che ho soddisfatto questa mia mera curiosità di lettrice avida di tutto. E, sicuramente, se in futuro leggerò altri Manga (e non lo escludo) potrò poi collocare meglio questo “Challengers”: a proposito, ogni consiglio da parte di chi legge queste parole, è ben accettato.

Mmh ich habe den Manga mit 16 das letzte Mal gelesen und hatte ihn irgendwie besser in Erinnerung..
Aus erwachsenen Augen finde ich einige Stellen ja schon etwas problematisch (Stichwort Homophobie, Klischees etc.).
Man muss natürlich im Hinterkopf behalten, dass die Reihe aus den 2000ern stammt und damit nicht ganz aktuell ist.
Trotz allem war der erste Band Küss mich, Student recht unterhaltsam. Ich mag den Humor von Hinako Takanaga und auch ihre Art zu zeichnen. Ihre Art Geschichten zu erzählen ist jedoch etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, da das Pacing doch sehr rasant ist, was die Geschichte weniger greifbar macht. Aber wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, gibt es da in den folgenden Bänden auch eine gute Steigerung.
Alles in allem würde ich gerne 3, 5 Sterne geben. Da das aber nicht geht, gibt es leider nur 3

Prima serie manga dell'anno,forse rimarrà anche l'unica,escludendo quelle in corso;piuttosto insolitamente si tratta di uno yaoi,letto solo perchè da gran tempo desideravo vedere gli esordi della conoscenza tra Morinaga e il suo senpai Soichi Tatsumi,solo per avere l'ulteriore conferma che Il tiranno rappresenta una felice eccezione alla mia di regola sostanziale indifferenza al genere,anche se non ho ancora ben individuato la ragione di tale anomalia.
Questo Challengers al contrario rientra perfettamente nella norma;l'ho trovato abbastanza simpatico e gradevole,con personaggi e situazioni ben tratteggiati almeno rispetto alla media del genere che mi è passata per le mani,però tutto sommato piuttosto insipido,tranne ancora una volta per le incursioni di Soichi e successivamente di Morinaga ed Hiroto,sempre divertenti,anche se in effetti devo dire che il cast a me è sembrato la componente più riuscita di questa serie,escludendo Tomoe,la cui caratterizzazione mi è parsa un po' debole e stereotipata.

I could have sworn I already marked this as read but I guess not. I collected this series and still have it, its a hard to find and coveted one but its not as popular as the other series by this mangaka: The Tyrant Falls in Love. I was introduced to the characters from that yaoi in this one and was excited to learn that the older brother with the long hair got his own series. This book was ok for me but not as good as the other (which eventually became repetitive and PWP).

This is the prequel to The Tryant Falls in Love, or I guess you can argue the other way around. Anywho- it's a nice story, the artwork is lovely, but it's not much beyond that. It was set up for humor, but I didn't chuckle, not even once. Love scenes were practically nonexistant, which is the exact opposite of it's sequel. I felt that Takanaga's focus shifts to Morigana and Soichi by the end in preporation for the next series (seen by the increased appearance of them and their relationship). That's not to say it's bad, or not totally unrelated. It seemed as though it was used to bring up the drama level as Tomoe and Mitsugu just aren't that dramatic.

Anyway-
If you are looking for a nice and somewhat short love story, this one is a good read.

This is the manga that started it all, introducing us to Tomoe Tatsumi and Kurokawa, but most notably to Souchi Tatsumi, Tomoe's older, bad-tempered, violent older brother who will become the star of his own series "The Tyrant Falls in Love" or "Koiuru Bokun" in Japanese. The romance between Tomoe and Kurokawa is cute, but to me the supporting characters like Souchi, Morigana (seen first in vol 2) and Isogai are more interesting.

This first edition is expensive and rare, I have the rest of this series but this title is too elusive and expensive for me at this time so I read it online.

Well, it's the prequel to The Tryant Who Falls in Love, and you can clearly see from the art that it was made before that. It's kind of nice, although I prefer Souichi's story. ^__^;

I did like this manga series, it is sweet and kinda funny. The characters were all honest with their feelings and it was easy to read. However, it really wasn't anything special.
