Tim Duncan is a dominant player. He can score against the best opponents with a flurry of strong moves near the basket, or he can step outside and bury his classic bank shot. On defense, he controls the paint. He blocks shots and corrals rebounds. Tim Duncan can do it all on the court. And all he does is win. Since joining the San Antonio Spurs in 1997, Duncan has led the team to four NBA championships and twelve straight fifty-win seasons. Author Stew Thornley explores the spectacular career of this all-time great champion.
Tim Duncan is a very talented player that started off like most of basketball fans then became one of the best in the NBA and plays against some of the biggest teams. He grew up in St. Croix, which was an island in the Caribbean sea next to Puerto Rico. However, his first sport was not basketball, it was swimming because he lived in an island where most kids practiced that sport. He hd very supporting parents who both worked to help him live and have an education. In 1989, he found out his mother had cancer, it was a hard moment for his whole family, but his mom supported him anyways, and came to his swimming races. “ She was my biggest fan” said Tim while his mom had cancer. After his mom died, Hurricane Hugo hit the island where Tim lived in and it destroyed a lot of things including the swimming pool where he practiced, but it did not destroy the hoop that he had in his backyard because his dad did a good job putting the hoop up. In addition the team started practicing in the ocean with the fear of sharks attacking which made Tim hate going to practice. So it made him change to basketball. After playing basketball for a while, he liked it so he played with his older sister’s husband and later on he played for St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School. A big game came up for the team and Tim was playing against Mourning and one of the players was played for Wake Forest University, so when he went back Chris King told his coach how Tim was good. Then the coach offered him a transfer to Wake Forest University, which made him begin a basketball career. While he studied psychology, he helped the team so much during the season and rocked the court. He won a lot of prizes and awards in the university and he was named best player. Then he went to the NBA to a team called the San Antonio Spurs. He played there and got to the finals against the New York Knicks. Then he won the championship and was named MVP.
The book is a biography because it explains specifically Tim Duncan's life. The books tells the reader all there is to know about Duncan from his childhood to him being named MVP in the NBA finals. I think this person is a hero because his childhood was very tough because his mom died when he was young and he lived in poverty. He is a hero also because he changed his dreams because of a hurricane that destroyed his main dream, but he didn't give up. Tim Duncan became famous because he was such a talented player. He was very young and he would play so well that other coaches and fans loved him. In addition, Tim Duncan’s career was inspired by several people such as his mom, dad, and his oldest sister. A lesson learned from Tim’s life is that whatever happens that destroys your dreams never give up and try other things because some other opportunities might come up.
My favorite part of the book was when Tim Duncan was chosen by the other coach to go play in the university team, which made him start a very new career. It was my favorite part because it made the reader excited about what was going to happen next and what his career would be like. My second favorite part was when he won the NBA championship and was named MVP. In addition, my least favorite part and probably the least favorite part of most readers was when his mother died because of cancer. This was the least favorite part because it was heartbreaking that his mother that supported him throughout his life died. Finally, this book would be recommended to all the people that love sports and even more to the people that love basketball specifically. This book would be a 6th to 8th grade book because it if fun to read and has interesting facts.
