listen. ogawa. my gal. my pal. my mangaka bud. i'm gonna need you to work on making tramps like us a rape free zone. no more of rapist threats okay? that is not what i want to see in my fun josei manga. you can have sumire pet momo's hair instead! or have her hang out with yuri! or look off dazedly in the distance as she contemplates hasumi! literally anything else would be better. 3 stars

Edit: (Somewhat more of a cohesive review, don't bother reading because it's just rambling lol)

All right, so I'll have to do an entire review of the series later (maybe when I've actually finished it), but as of right now I have to get SOMETHING down because it feels like I'm gonna explode.

I finished Volume 11 (there are only 14 volumes total) on Saturday. Up until then, I think since Wednesday or Tuesday, I'd been devouring these books faster than a crackhead could sniff cocaine, because they are that good and that addictive. I've barely slept, I barely remember to eat, I sometimes remember to bathe because the whole time, in between rushing to do half-assed schoolwork and crying about AP Chemistry, I've been reading this series. My neck has been hurting more than ever because I'm so lost in the story I forget to look up properly. I got my friends on Friday to read the series and they've been hooked since the first chapter. It is THAT good.

As good as they are, though, and as cute as they are, it also comes as a double-edged sword: these books are so good as to be painful.

These books are damn cute. Too damn cute. How the hell am I not supposed to be punched in the gut and in the chest time after time again with pure, raw, emotion?

Ogawa Yayoi is a great writer. She really is. She's developed these characters so well that I feel like I know them, and I want what's best for each and every one of them (minus one character, but we'll get to her in a second). The main trio (consisting of Sumire, Hasumi, and Momo/Takeshi) are my absolute favorite protagonists of anything I've ever read, manga or not.

Sumire is our main heroine, a 28-year old woman who's dating Hasumi, an old love from her college days. She's loved him for eight years and has finally been able to act on it. Hasumi, in turn, loves her with such a heartfelt and deep intensity that I want to cry.

Hasumi is damn cheesy and (used to) say the most cliche things ("All my heart thinks of is you," "We'll meet in our dreams"), but the thing is, he sincerely means all of them. He is the most steadfast, loyal, faithful guy I have ever read about. His devotion and his love for Sumire is so sweet and so beautiful that it kills me--he has NEVER faltered in his love for her, even when she's faltered with hers for him.

Plus, he's damn gorgeous:

Momo is adorable and it wasn't until now that I don't really have that much else to say about him besides that. There's a lot to him--he's a mixture between an adorable little puppy dog and the worst little sh*t ever. But I guess when it comes to a relationship with Sumire, I have more to say about Hasumi's than Momo's (although I really like the illustrations featuring the both of them together):

Anyway, these three are my ABSOLUTE favorite protagonists, and ALL I want is for all of them to be happy and to be together--seriously, why can't they be?! It agonizes and tears me up that they can't be--Sumire has to choose either between Hasumi or Momo, and let's be honest, it's clear from the get-go who she's going to pick.

So, again, it kills me, because this volume feels like the turning point for the story. I've never seen the end of a book left off so beautifully, so perfectly--it promises to build up to an amazing climax and then change the whole story around, and honestly?

I'm scared to read it.

I've been avoiding Chapter 65/Volume 12 like the plague because I don't want to see how this story plays out. I know how it'll end, but how it'll get there? It's going to kill me. It'll be like extracting a giant barb wire fence out of the inside of my heart, with a pair of oversized garden pliers.

I've been floating along mostly happily for the entirety of this series, but I'm scared of having my faith in this author tested. Seriously, how can you just put your heart out like that and expect it not to be crushed--how do you trust someone's skill, someone's compassion like that?

I just want all of them to be happy, and I know that won't be possible, that they're not the type of people to get involved in a three-way relationship and anyway, (poor, poor) Hasumi doesn't even know about it yet.

I can see the general direction that this is going to go in, and I actually hate it. being together I can handle. with a broken heart--I'm sure I'll be able to imagine a way for them to be happy, in the future, because honestly doesn't really deserve to be with them anyway.

But who ends up with? No. Just, NO!!!!!

Warning, long rant ahead:

Why. Just WHY???

Not only is this morally, morally wrong in so many ways, not only is it SO problematic, but doesn't the author realize deserves better than this???

From an accidental viewing of the 12th volume's summary...I guess not. Ugh.

I love this series. I love, love, LOVE this series (I ordered the first 11 volumes off eBay last night!! :DD), and I'm scared of having my heart broken. I don't ever want things to end--I started a 13-episode anime last October of 2014, and I'm still on episode 11 because it's SO CUTE. I just can't deal with it.

I don't think I'll be able to handle it, which is why I'm writing this ramble of a review today, as a sort of bookmark in this point in life.

Would I recommend this series? With ALL OF MY HEART.

If it's not your type of thing, don't bother. But if it is--you will never find anything better.

---

Original Reaction:

WHY DID YOU CUT YOUR HAIR, MOMO?!?!?!?!?

WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!?!

Please let this not be permanent!!!!!!

This review is for the series as a whole with 4 out of 5 stars

WARNING: This review contains some spoilers so read at your own risk.

I first heard of this story when I stumbled upon a jdrama which was based on this manga a few years ago. I really find the idea of a person being someone else’s pet amusing. I know what you’re thinking, wahahaha. This one isn’t kinky at all, it was actually pretty wholesome.

Kimi wa pet is a story of Sumire who stumbled upon a box containing a young Takeshi. She fed him and found out that he had nowhere to go. Takeshi wants to stay, but he can only stay if he becomes her pet. Thinking that saying such preposterous things would discourage Takeshi, Sumire was surprised he agreed. Both of their lives after that encounter changed forever. Was it for good or bad?

This story started with introducing Sumire who I would say is a perfect example of a “strong independent woman”. That would have been a great thing right? Unfortunately because of it, her boyfriend of 5 years cheated on her and made her feel that it was all because of her that it had happened. She is also not that well liked in their office because she looks really stiff and strict. But her life took a turn after taking in Takeshi whom she’d named Momo, which was her dead pet’s name.

Kimi wa pet is quite a lengthy read for a josei so it includes a lot of scenes not only focusing about the relationship between the main characters but also about some of the side characters as well. And speaking of characters, this story has a lot of them so I find it hard to keep track of them sometimes. Just like most manga that I’ve read, Kimi wa pet has a lot of very funny scenes that left me laughing my heart out. Maannn! I still can’t stop myself from laughing just thinking about those scenes, lol.

Aside from the happy ones, Kimi wa pet had a lot of scenes that I really hated. Unfortunately this story contains one of the things I hate in romance, which is the third party. I just keep on hating the other girl that I also ended up hating the other love interest of Sumire as well. He was actually a pretty ideal guy and I love how he reacts to Sumire. You can really see how he adores her, plus they really look good together. He can be pretty funny too lol, just too bad he wasn’t able to keep that image for me until the end. Although I kind of pity him a little in the end.

As for the main character Sumire, I really liked my first impression of her. She’s a really tough chick and she doesn’t accept b*llsh*t. She can be really harsh at times but I guess that’s just how she is. Little by little, I’ve got to really see the real her and why she’s like that. She looks really tough but she can be fragile too. I really like her character, but I just hated how she can’t always voice out her real feelings and how she always delays informing her boyfriend about her pet, that in the end, I don’t think he ever found out. I also liked Momo’s influence on her, ever since they were living together as master and pet, Sumire was finally able to create connections with other people and express herself. I just find it really interesting getting to know her character in each chapter.

Momo on the other hand is very fun to read. I usually don’t like childish characters, but his childishness is not in an annoying way. He is also very outgoing so it’s hard to imagine those hardships he experienced in the past and in the present too. When he’s with Sumire, he’s very childish and playful which makes him look like a real pet dog, lol. He ran away from home. That’s why he doesn’t have a place of his own, so despite his age you could say that he knows a lot about life. I guess he also has this promiscuous side to him, but I think it was only seen around 2 times while I was reading this story. He’s years younger than Sumire but he taught her a lot of things. I also LOVE how he loves Sumire so much, I just can’t imagine how he’s been feeling all those times while Sumire is still in a relationship with her boyfriend, who is also her first love.

As for the romance, I guess it’s already pretty obvious who’s going to be the main couple right? There were a lot of annoying characters who really irritated me but I guess that just helps Sumire realize whom she really wants to be with. The hint is actually there in its early chapters, but I like how the mangaka transitioned her feelings until she finally realized that she’s in love. Their official relationship started in a long distance romance, but I love how the two of them made it work. I particularly like their virtual date, it was really cute. I also love the fact that the two of them didn’t sacrifice anything in their life just to make their relationship work, even though it could mean that they’ll be in a long distance relationship.

I also love the fact that this manga didn’t just end after the two of them were finally in a relationship but we’ve got to read more! It didn’t just focus on the relationship between the two but also the friendship between Sumire and her best friend. Actually, this manga didn’t just show me romance, but it also gave me life lessons and realizations that we could apply in our daily life. We’ve also got to read about friendships between the characters and work life (especially about relationships between coworkers). Isn’t that nice?

Kimi wa pet is highly recommended for every romance lover. I am certain that this will really entertain you, *wink.

This is a weird stretch. Characters act weird throughout in this volume. I can't bring myself to give any volume in this series less than a 4, but like volume 9, this one gets close.

In this volume, Momo confronts Shiori in Hong Kong. It is an odd interlude that doesn't exactly show him in the best light yet that is kind of why I like this series. No one is exactly good or exactly bad. Shiori too has cracks. She really does love Hasumi but what she is doing isn't good for herself or for him. Hasumi loves Sumire but does he love the Sumire in his head or the real one. Momo loves Sumire but is it holding him back from growing? Finally, Sumire's weaknesses are exacerbated by her involvement with Hasumi and she has a tendency to take it out on others.

That all said, the 3rd to last panel of the volume that shows Takeshi taking charge of himself as Takeshi is worth all the weird of the previous pages.

A good volume - Sumire is unhappy - unsure of why Hasumi is withdrawing from her, Momo knows that Fukushima is living with Hasumi, and is conflicted about telling Sumire and revealing his feelings, and Hasumi and Fukushima end their cohabitation by Fukushima revealing that she never slept with him (of which the whole situation is pretty fucked up).

Lost stars for the pointless chapter about the beach-side hypnotist rapist that serves no point for the plot, and for how quickly the issue of Fukushima living with Hasumi is wrapped up - it should have been a slower reveal/decision since the levels she went to manipulate Hasumi were excessive and awful.

I love love love this series! I wasn't sure what to expect as I began reading but I was soon very pleasantly surprised with the depth of the characters, sweetness of the story, and the originality of this manga. Yes, the premise of the story is unusual and seems a bit weird at first but it's actually very sweet and full of heart. Read this manga series! 5 stars

Do be aware that this series is Josei and is kind of open door. It contains some language and generalizations that are wrong. But. . . overall this is a very sweet, emotionally deep, and cute story that I really enjoyed.

Dragged on way too much at this point and too many filler chapters...

I find hard to review each volume separately now because... I already read all of them and kinda lost track of what happened in each volume. But overall I really enjoy this series, it's different, I love the art style and the care for each episodic character is impressive too. I love how complex the characters are and I love to see them grow with each volume.

Awww we learn so much about Momo's inner thoughts in this volume. I just feel like either way, someone will get hurt and I don't want that. I just want her to get her happy ending no matter what that looks like but I feel like they both need to be honest about their "pets".

I found this volume lacking as well. I feel so little is made to seem like a lot. I know it’s all the little threads and stuff to get to the big reveal but still it’s super boring.

Whom will Sumire choose - Momo or Hasumi? Is Momo going to decide to get on with his life without her once and for all? We still don't know the answers to those questions, but Volume 11 is another set of compelling romantic misadventures in this fantastic manga series.

The question I most want answered is "When is someone going to publish more of Yayoi Ogawa's manga in English?!?" Ogawa's art is gorgeous and her writing in Tramps Like Us is spot-on. It's quite a feat to make a story about a young man who's kept as a "pet" by a career woman neither kinky nor cheesy. Ogawa does a marvelous job of conveying the different tempos and moods of the rather unusual relationships between Sumire and her men, and adds depth to the story with a wide cast of well-developed (and sometimes completely wacky!) secondary characters.
