Oxford Bookworms Library: Stage 1: The Coldest Place on Earth: Reader - Stage 1: 400 Headwords (Oxford Bookworms ELT) by Vicary, Tim published by OUP Oxford

Rate this book
In the summer of 1910, a race began. A race to be the first man at the South Pole, in Antarctica. Robert Falcon Scott, an Englishman, left London in his ship, the Terra Nova, and began the long journey south. Five days later, another ship also began to travel south. And on this ship was Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian. But Antarctica is the coldest place on earth, and it is a long, hard journey over the ice to the South Pole. Some of the travellers never returned to their homes again. This is the story of Scott and Amundsen, and of one of the most famous and dangerous races in history.

this book is awesome, strory about the race between Englishman and Norwegians, the Scott captain and Amundsen captain. They had a competition who can first reach the South Pole. They all wanted to become the first flog in the South Pole. They met lots of natural calamities like snowstorm and strong wind. They must endure low temperature and without enough food. Finally Norwegians won the race and first put the black flog in the South Pole. Then they went back their trip. Englishman died when they went to their way for ship.
The Scott captain and Amundsen captain are main characters in the story. They are all tried to be first man to reach South Pole and would leave their motherland’s flag at the South Pole. They were competing for their dream. But the way which could make dream come true was dangerous. Why did they have the different ending? Norwegians worked hard, they were looking forward to getting to the South Pole, and they had many dogs, and sledges, they could use dogs and sledges. The journey to the South Pole was difficult for them. That’s why they could win the match. The British men were losers, because they didn’t get ready for the journey, didn’t work hard.
Whatever the winner and loser, they were all heroes.
I like Captain Amundsen; because he was visionary leadership and always lead the team did the right things. He worked hard with others, so I respect him and his members. Failure is the mother of success, don’t afraid of failure, believe yourself that you can be the best.
I like this book very much. They are all brave and their countries would proud of them. It means the human no afraid of challenging. you must read, recomended from me 😂

• Investing time in preparation in not a waste, it will guarantee you a fast start and comfort journey

This book talks about the race between to teams to the coldest place on Earth which is the south pole. An English man named Robert Falcon Scott went on a shipped called the Terra Nova and went on a long journey to the south pole, while a Norwegian man named Roald Amundsen also wanted to go to the south pole and did so.

Their journeys were not easy, they encountered a lot of difficulties and obstacles on their journey towards reaching the south pole.

This book is based on the fact, but I doubt whether it is the fact. According to this book, the failture of Scott is Scott's a series of wrong decisions. But according to other books, they blame this to bad luck, changeable cold weather. Anyway, walking to the North Pole is really amazing and bravery, no matter he won or not.

Una historia conmovedora sobre las expediciones que descubrieron el polo sur.
El libro está adaptado para que lectores principiantes no ingleses la lean.
Creo que es un libro que se debe leer.

1: Oxford level 1
2: 04/16=10 minutes 04/29=75 minutes
3: Scott, Amundsen, South Pole, Antarctic, cold, dogs, sledges
4:I didn't like " When the dogs were dead, the other dogs are them. The men ate them, too." , because these phrases were so cruel. But I could know all conditions were bad, so there was nothing they could do.
5: I enjoyed reading this book. As Sophie said that so I wanted to read! I was getting confused which is North and South or Atlantic and Antarctic, but I was excited to read it! I'll recommend you.

It is really difficult and hard to go to the south pole. Dogs are better than ponies. Dogs are very strong on the ice and they are eaten. I was shocked that most English men died.
