Are you obsessed? We can all feel that way at times--when all our thoughts, time, and energy are poured into something all-consuming. But for too many teen girls, obsession becomes a way of life.
In Obsessed , bestselling author Hayley DiMarco helps those girls leave behind the thoughts, actions, and stuff that so easily get between them and God. She challenges them to look at three key areas where it all tends to
obsession with losing (fear, worry, stress, busyness) obsession with gaining (love, stuff, success) obsession with numbing (addiction, cutting, eating, purging, controlling, comfort)
Obsessed helps girls to identify the unhealthy affections in their lives and points them to God to be set free from them. Life's pursuits aren't inherently bad, DiMarco reminds girls, but the level of devotion you give to them can make them bad for you. When you put God in his proper place, the other stuff goes to its proper place as well. And the result is a life rightly obsessed with God.
Hayley DiMarco is the best-selling author of over 30 books, including God Girl, Mean Girls, and Die Young. She and her husband, Michael, run Hungry Planet, a company focused on producing books that combine hard-hitting biblical truth with cutting-edge design in Nashville, Tennessee.
Hayley DiMarco, the author of Obsessed, emphasizes on breaking free from the things that consume you. Anyone can relate this book to our daily lives and the hassles we go through each day. The author dives deeper and allows us to explore the following topics presented in this novel: the obsessed soul, obsessed with loss, obsessed with gain, obsessed with relief, and obsessed with God. The author explores different stops along the journey of obsession.
DiMarco focuses on the topic that earthly things, in which we can be consumed, aren't as important as being obsessed with God. She discusses breaking free from actions and thoughts that can easily distract and come between our relationship with God. When God is our number one focus and everything else in our life is under Him, DiMarco explained, then and only then, can we be truly devoted to God and surrender our life fully to Him. My favorite quote from this book is when the author says in bold letters, "You can serve your own pleasure or you can serve God, but you can't serve both."
In order to worship something, you have to be willing to sacrifice for it. If you are reading this review and know in your heart that you are sacrificing your body to someone or something other than God, such as sacrificing your nourishment to fit the ideals of being thin, your skin for cutting, your health for overeating or drugs, or your heart for finally getting love, then I am afraid, you are worshipping and dedicating your life to something or someone other than God. DiMarco states that this is a real issue. If you love something that brings harsh treatment to your heart, mind or body to the point of sin, then you are destroying the temple of God in order to serve yourself.
This book has forced me to self-evaluate and question who I really serve. Am I devoted and love God unconditionally? Do I put Him first before everything else that I do? I highly recommend this book, to spend time searching within yourself and allow your values to be tested. DiMarco has touched on a topic which most Christians today completely disregard and overlook.
I needed this book. Hayley DiMarco puts her finger on many things that I struggle with, and helped me see the way out, through Christ. If only we could all be obsessed with only Him. I would definitely recommend this book!
