Life is hard--for everyone. No matter how blessed or fortunate you might be, there is a level of difficulty to your hard classes, jobs, relationships, and losses. But by following seven basic life disciplines, anyone can experience accomplishment, freedom, and ease in navigating through life's daily challenges. In this positive, insightful book, veteran pastor Bob Merritt describes a set of universal principles that can work for everyone in every stage of life, showing that what you do today determines who you become tomorrow.
"The life disciplines in this book will lead readers away from failure and regret to accomplishment and ease--not easy, but ease in getting 'out of the boat' and on with navigating through life's daily challenges."--John Ortberg, author, The Me I Want to Be
"Here's your breakthrough--insightful, practical, biblical wisdom that can turn your life around!"--Lee Strobel, author, The Case for the Real Jesus
I was gifted one of his other books this year and I have to say that Bob Merritt is now one of my favorite people..he’s so honest, so funny, so humble, so real, and deeply inspiring. His books somehow always come to me at just the exact moment I need them and speak to my bruised body and soul. 7 simple choices is a truly wonderful honest book about life’s difficulties that we all stumble upon and how to not only survive them but ways to become better as a person, better in your relationship with God and other people, and how to make life not such a struggle. “..but I do know that sometimes all you can do is get through one more day, then another, and another after that, believing that God is teaching you, strengthening you, and doing something in you that will make you more complete. Often the only difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is flat out perseverance and giving it just one more day.”
I always enjoy reading and learning about others daily rituals. The author shares from his heart about insights he's discovered from daily life experiences, his failures and success. He touches upon living for today, writing down your priorities, being able to say "no" graciously and understanding sowing and reaping principles. I'm a huge fan of smiling and having a positive outlook. I especially like the Rhythm section in the book because it clearly defines a person's character in his choices and predictable outcomes, like being dependable and punctual. It's a very practical book and what he says makes sense. I found the writings to be encouraging, inspiring and rewarding; living a new life.
This book from a mega-church pastor is well organized and accessible. His guidance is not rocket science and gives readers plenty to ponder. I do think this is geared toward men mainly and unfortunately I am not sure I would like Mr. Merritt very much personally. He clearly loves hunting, likes having his wife at home, and likes to share how much he has traveled the world. Perhaps a bit old-fashioned and egotistical? He also seems a wee bit high strung.
What is good to me are the clear directives he provides and they are not saturated with scripture references as some books do. It does have an empowering message that we all have choices to make and there is no need to stay stuck.
This is one of those unique works of non-fiction writing that speaks such a clear message, sentence by deliberate sentence, that the reader thinks over and over to him or herself, "Dear wonderful, engaging book, how did I not know about you until now?"
I gave this book a 5 star rating because I wish absolutely everyone could read it.
Very insightful and a super easy read. I love how the author uses a real life story then relates it to the bible and then shows how it relates to life. Bob Merritt gave me something to think about with every page. I recommend this book to anyone who is not perfect.
It gave me a lot to think about. It makes you really look at what you’re doing and encourages you to make spiritual disciplines a part of your life. He encourages you to evaluate. I like Merritt’s style. He’s down to earth and has a lot of true life stories to illustrate his points.
Absolutely a great book to read. Made quite a few highlights for future references. Easy to read and even had me laughing at parts. Very down to earth person with a way with words. Made me look at myself in the mirror and reflect on how I can change to be that better person.
Beneficial, especially in the areas of discipline in the personal life. As a conservative Christian, I would have preferred a King James Bible approach without author paraphrase of scripture and a stronger stand against personal sins. Good read though.
