Emma is the only child of Harry Forrest, a widower who is running the local mill in the 1910's which was built by his own father. Harry has never overcome his disappointment that he has no sons, and he takes this out on Emma on a regular basis.
This is Emma's life story, beginning when she is a young woman, helping her father at the mill and trying to earn his approval and love. The story takes us through her life with all of its joys and heartbreaks, always with the mill a prominent "character" in the story. Emma's life is not only impacted by the family and friends surrounding her, but also by the important events of the time, such as a world war and the rapid progress in industry.
The novel was a bit slow at times, but overall, I enjoyed the story.
