Nell's Elf

Rate this book
Jane Cowen-Fletcher’s cheerful tale about the delights of the imagination reminds us it doesn’t take much to keep boredom at bay.

It’s raining, it’s pouring, and Nell is bored, bored, bored. She has no one to play with and nothing to do! But with the help of some crayons - and a vivid imagination - Nell conjures up the perfect friend to spice up a dull day.

In this fanciful tale full of old-fashioned storybook charm, Nell and her very own elf beat the rainy-day blues by throwing an elf party, complete with fantastic magical guests, plenty of singing and dancing, and feasting on chocolate chips right out of the bag.

It is something I personally can identify with being an only child. There were some days when it was very boring. I WISH I had thought of doing this. It would have been fun, challenging, and whimsical. That is how I view this story. It seems very believable and like something that a child could come up with. The artwork is fantastic. This would be a great little story to read to a young child as a bedtime story, or for an early reader to read.

Bored and wishing for a playmate, Nell draws a picture of an elf. When the elf comes to life, Nell realizes a little imaginzation can keep boredom away. Both future and beginning readers--especially those without siblings--will appreciate this gentle, playful story’s simple vocabulary and colored penci lullustrations that echo the tone. Share this story with younger elementary classes, then have them draw their own elf friends for a colorful classroom display.
