The feeling I got with this one is, nothing happened. Obviously the story happened, but it was one of those level placid ones. You see the story is close to the end and still no peak. I liked Ivy. She got on with it and had no problem facing down the counterparts. It felt Kade heavy, which I liked. He and Obi were fun and he was always popping up like a jack in a box from the shadows. I didn't like Elias. There was the initial historic rejection and the forgetting pretense. The way he was on Kade's case all the time was a little annoying. Even after Kade's abrupt revelation, he was just there. The plot was predictable but easy going. I felt sorry for Loam. He was the main casualty in it all. Would've been nice to have the Flesh architect and Obi together for once.

So, I feel like the romance was a little weak and I really wanted more from the story, but I also absolutely didn't want to put this book down. Seriously. I was up 2 hours past my bedtime, then actually got up before my alarm to keep reading.
I just honestly wish I knew more. I have so many questions!

Had SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!

This would’ve been a FABULOUS series or a trilogy, as it was it was too short, too hurried, too rushed at the end, and unapologetically “unfinished.”

I adored Ivy, Kade and Elias! Ivy is a sweet, survivor with a heart of gold and a spine made of steel! Her mother died in a horrific car “accident,” leaving Ivy responsible for her brother’s care (he went “insane” after the accident) and herself…putting herself through medical school to become an “archaic medic,” as opposed to a healer because she’s a “lacking,” a being that does not have the splintered remains of dead Gods within her, therefore she was born, and could not receive power when the “Gods splintered,” changing humans into Light and Dark beings with magical affinities.

The world and characters that Haze builds are both intriguing, and really cool conceptually, even written…the problem is that the ideas and world and characters that Haze write deserve AND need much more “time” to build, grow and develop! The book is much too short to accommodate the “huge” conceptually built universe that Haze has introduced us to, and also too short to give her cool characters enough “time on page” to develop and grow as individuals AND as a ménage. Kade and Elias’s relationship and sexual encounter occurs when the book is nearly OVER, and although you know that they are/were together as a couple from the short synopsis with “trigger warnings,” you would have NO IDEA THAT THEY WERE BI, if not for the fact that Ivy spots them together in a sexual encounter one evening toward the end of the book. Up until that point they were rivals and seemed JEALOUS of each other OVER Ivy, not interested in one another sexually or as a past couple who wish to be one a threesome and are mates to Ivy.

Apart from the very short acknowledgement of Kade’s and Elias’s past and future relationship (being tossed into the book like a stray thought) neither gets enough page time with IVY!! The characters were fantastic, and introduced in a way that I could absolutely see them being in a relationship with Ivy, and even perhaps someday with one another…having given enough TIME! Unfortunately the reader isn’t given enough time. The book hurls to the ending at breakneck speed, wrapping up all those amazing concepts and ideas that Haze introduced in her Counterpart Universe! You’re literally dropped nuggets of “gold,” only to end up in a “famine.”

I wish that this had been book one in a series or a trilogy. The counterpart “universe” was so interesting and cool, and Ivy was JUST starting to become aware that she was “more” than a mere lacking human. You, as the reader become aware pretty quickly that there is something special about Ivy despite her believing herself to be a “lacking.” But the explanation and description of her “abilities and power” are thrown into the book in the last five pages!!! You’re literally TOLD (not shown) who Ivy is, where she came from, what her ability really is, and how she is going to move forward with her two guys. It’s so incredibly unsatisfying, and so sadly neglectful doing a disservice to these amazing characters and story that Haze introduced us to!! I wanted, NO I needed more! More time to understand and READ ABOUT Ivy’s power and her true origins. I needed more time to read about her relationship with both men, alone, and as a threesome! The heat level on this book is like on a level 2. And though I do not mind non-steamy books, the reader is given the false impression that this book is going to be a lot spicier than it actually is. When we get the spice it’s great. But it’s literally thrown in AT THE VERY END OF THE BOOK! It’s way too rushed, feels forced, and doesn’t naturally evolve the depth of Ivy, Elias and Kade’s relationships.

In the end this book held so much potential, and the storyline and characters were incredibly cool and well thought out. Sadly they weren’t well WRITTEN OUT, not being given the time they needed to develop! Again, this would’ve been a fabulous series or trilogy, but as a standalone it leaves the reader feeling parched!

I liked this book a lot. It was a very interesting and different story. It was a bit slow in the beginning but about halfway through I couldn’t put it down. A little spice toward the end.

An interesting universe with a great mystery and slowest of burn romances!

Trying to get by in a world that seems to constantly want to drag her down she’s doing her best. Drowning in debt taking care of her brother, working all her nights to cover his medical bills, while going to school to become a medic, she’s almost there. One more year and she’ll finally be able to work in her career, but nothing is ever easy, and when an injured guy drops down on her car from the sky she can’t not try to help him knowing there have been numerous attacks on others in the area.

We have quite the resilient FMC as she’s been dealing with so many challenges over the years of her life, she’s a strong character and proves it many times over. It’s the classic had to grow up quickly, but with that she still falls into some naïveté’s, one of which is a throw away “she’s a virgin” that’s never addressed again.

The slow burn of these relationships is truly slow, and the spice is mildest of mild. Things don’t progress with the FMC until almost the end of the book, even the relationship building doesn’t truly start until later. The mystery takes precedence in the story and we don’t delve into building relationships and understanding our MMCs until much later.

In the end we still don’t know much about our MMCs and their pasts. There were some statements made about having lived many years before meeting the FMC and how the MMCs had know each other for so long, but there were no details given. Their relationship and how it progressed over the years was never delved into save for explaining that one incident made a mess of what they had, which once again we don’t really know what they had between them exactly.

This had such great potential to be an incredible book, but there were some things that missed the mark. The universe was expanding well as we got interesting details through the mystery we were uncovering, which provided the context for information dumping. The unfortunate part was that I felt some of the details we were uncovering were cut short at times, and then things were simply inferred with no follow-up. There seemed to statements made and accepted whenever convenient.

It was also a far too quick wrap up for me at the end of this book. The tension built and the action hit, but even with the villain monologues it still felt like answers were missing. I felt like there were a few plot holes that we brushed over and some loose ends still flying about.

Although it was a quick epilogue, with a vague time jump, we were left with a nice spicy scene to end the book!

I enjoyed this book. It was good. My only issue is that it felt so fast paced at the end.

I realize it’s a standalone but as I was reading the story was seamless every event that happened fell into the next very well. But then you get to the end and it’s like all piled together. Like you find out her “father” took her brother, Loam yet Ivy’s father is supposedly this guy that Kade and his counterpart has killed. Only to find out no he’s dead but it’s actually Ivy’s grandfather and her professor Mueller who killed him and took Loam all bc he’s trying to make counterparts and is psychotic. As well as him being the sigil killer to. It was just a lot and felt dumped all into one scene. Plus the fact that the Shade Ivy kept running into was actually meant to be a part of Ivy and didn’t want to harm her.

And then the other thing was that all the relationships felt kinda rushed. Like you think Elias and Kade hate each other then they’re getting it on in Ivy’s kitchen. Next thing yk Ivy and Kade and Ivy and Elias are both together and starting relationships of their own. As well as Ivy’s relationship with Niri her supposed bestfriend yet she’s not really privy to a lot of what it seems Ivy goes thru, idk I just didn’t feel that closeness I think bsf should have.

However despite all that I still enjoyed the book and the fascinating story. It is definitely a different take on why ppl would have power and the ‘supernatural’ if you will and that’s why I’m still giving four stars.

4.5 stars.
I'm not even sure I should be allowed to review Michaela Haze books anymore since I'm just so obsessed with them that it's impossible to not be biased. This read/was formulated exactly like all her other books, and I ATE IT UP. Done in a day.

Reviewing a fast-paced, standalone novel is always a challenge. Yes, there's always going to be a lack of complete world building. Yes, the relationships are going to feel a bit fast. Yes, it's going to conclude without every plot line wrapped up. But the benefit is that when you pick it up you aren't committed to a dang 7-book series!

I really liked the FMC in this one, and both MMCs grew on me as well. They were a little unserious considering their positions of power in the society, but it's fine, it was endearing. The world was unique, and I almost did wish this was a series because I would have liked to know more about it. There were some standard tropes and I won't say I was completely surprised by some of the twists, but this was a fun read and I'd recommend it to anyone. I almost thought we were going to not get a group scene and I was going to flip a table....the only thing I do wish, even if it meant another couple pages added to the length, was a little more affection between the two MMCs at the end. We got the m/m teaser early on, as well as a lot about how they care for each other, and then not even a kiss at the end.

The World building was so interesting! I loved the characters, Ivy, Kade and Elias were so intriguing! And the alters! Pieces of a dead God, that inhabit their hosts, once they fall alseep! I had never read anything like it!

Ivy is a sweet girl, who survived the horrific car accident that killed her Mother, with lots of scars. She became responsible for her older brother's care, because he became catatonic following the accident.

In their World, some of the inhabitants have an alter, a being made of a piece of a dead God, that gives them magical abilities, from the second Moon that inhabits the sky. But Ivy ia a Lacking, a person without an alter, withut magic.

The World was very cool, as were the alters, and the magic system, but I felt like the book was rushed, and underdeveloped.

It was ok

Honestly the romance angle felt rushed and unnecessary. A large chunk of the world building and mythology was lacking true answers. Over all it was interesting but idk nothing special.

I didn’t really care for any of the characters, they didn’t feel really or developed further than introductory version of them.

There was also a lot of weirdly phrased sentences which made me have to read a sentence a few times to catch the point. Plus there were wrong word choices, as well as mis-spellings which I can forgive because it’s hard to catch everything.

Overall it wasn’t a bad read but it wasn’t overtly compelling and sadly it will be easily forgotten. Had a cool cover though 👏🏻

"I wanted to ask what Kade could possibly see in me.
What did I have that warranted such attention?
People’s emotions weren’t as easy to articulate as the metaphors and similes I liked to throw around when I struggled to describe my feelings.
I wanted so much.
I wanted Kade.
I wanted Elias.
I wanted a world where I wasn’t scarred, scared, and poor. I wanted everything. I didn’t want Kade and Elias to realize how small I truly was. How little I had to offer." - Ivy

Her entire life, Ivy had been "lacking", or so she was told. After a series of revelations, Ivy discovers the earth shattering truth...

It's a great story but..

I really enjoyed the story. My first thought was it's great but eh.. it needs more. It needs more development between the relationships. It felt like I was thrown into their relationships. I loved the original story. It's so hard to find original stories these days. My other complaint was the shift in points of view; I hated the shift from first to third person. Her character development was really good. It showed her grow and become more confident as the story progresses. I'll be glad to read more from this universe.

5 Star Read for me!

I don’t often leave 5 star reviews, if I do it’s because the plot made it impossible for me to put down, the romance was romancing (spice or no spice) and the writing captivated me. This book has all of the above. Beautifully written, pulled me in and would not let me go until I finished it, and left me wanting more (sad to see this is a standalone!!!). One of the best books I’ve read this year!!!

It was interesting, but hard to read for some reason. I'm not good at analyzing books, so I couldn't tell you why that is. I still have some questions. And it had some typos. More than in some of MH's books, but also less than is her other books. It was an interesting read. And though the premise and idea were confusing but cool, I didn't feel that when I was reading it. Something crusial was missing here for me. But I couldn't say what it is, I just don't know.

Entertaining with a great premise but this would’ve probably benefited from being a duet. The first portion of the book sort of drags on then the action was very quick and a bit anti climatic. Also the sex scenes and romance were a bit weak, I didn’t feel much between the characters.

Who would be your Counterpart?

Now this was very different. Unique and entertaining. I mean all Michaela Haze books are that but I’m always surprised every time I find another beauty of her hard work.
Absolutely sensational read, keeps you entertained, addicted and blown away.

One chili pepper🌶

No menage until the very end. An entertaining read but not spicy at all. I would just lable this a PARANORMAL ROMANCE as the MFM was never developed just as an after thought.

What a shame

This book was really good. An originalstoryline and well written. Unfortunately the ending was extremely rushed which was a pity else this would have been a 5 star.
