Venys Needs Men

To Love a Dragon

Rate this book
Her scent lured a dragon, yet it is her heart he wants to claim.

In a single night of terror, everything Leyloni knows and loves is destroyed—her home left in flames, her friends and family dead, her way of life erased. She flees with the only other survivor, a baby named Serek. In a world where males are rarely born, Serek is precious beyond measure, and Leyloni must put aside her grief and pain to take him somewhere safe.

The only sanctuary she knows of is a friendly village on the far side of the Endless Forest.

It is a harrowing journey for a huntress to make on her own, more so with a babe. But Leyloni soon realizes she is not alone—she is being stalked by something far more dangerous than any raiders.

The beast is massive with a scaled hide, wicked claws, and sharp teeth. His eyes are like violet lightning, his roar like thunder.

He is a dragon.

And he intends to make her his.

I liked this, but found the pacing to be too slow at times. The h is human and the H is a dragon and both were sympathetic and likable main characters. There’s also a baby who the h is traveling with (the son of her best friend who is killed) following an attack on their tribe by an enemy tribe. They’re attempting to find a formerly friendly tribe to seek refuge when the h and the baby meet the H in his dragon form. Written in third person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and I think they were both virgins, definitely the h and the H was implied.

This is a world where human males are less common and more protected, so there’s a very different dynamic the h is used to when it comes to men. I loved how immediately protective and caring the H was of “his” humans. The h was also strong and resourceful, even through her recent grief. Also, lots of cute baby moments. The mythology around how dragons could be altered by the touch of a non-dragon mate was also very cool. I do think some of the daily details of them living and traveling in the forest became tedious. I also was a bit weirded out by the H’s equipment hanging out at times. But overall this was a sweet love story with a hopeful tone and some sadder and darker themes interspersed. The darker themes are tied into a couple of dangers and suspenseful moments. The H also had a tragic backstory and had been lonely for many years.

There is a HEA with an epilogue several months in the future. I did want an epilogue a bit further out because I was curious about any children they had. Still, it was a very sweet ending and wrapped up the story nicely.

My heart eyes are strong with this one. Arysteon and Leyloni (and baby Serek) are just...sweet together. Where the other dragons fought against being claimed by a human, Arysteon was all "Hey, you seem kinda cool, let's do this." (Totally not how it happened. He was much more earnest and into her. It wasn't at all a casual undertaking. I swear.)

Let's face it, being on the run from the Bone Wraiths who slaughtered her village (hate 'em!), Leyloni is focused on keeping herself and Serek safe. Two things she's 100% not looking for are (a) a dragon and (b) her forever guy (who happened to be said dragon). She's shell-shocked and a mess and Arysteon offers her safety and a moment to pull herself together and THINGS HAPPEN. As they should.

I've really liked this entire series and I completely understand why the dragons in general fought against being claimed by a human and losing their immortality, but I really dug Arysteon deciding he was tired of being alone and Leyloni was the one he wanted to dedicate himself to. He was sweetly gentle with her and the baby, but he still had the teeth and claws to go after those who hurt her. Bone Wraiths, man. Hate 'em.

A little heartache, a family by choice, and some bloody retribution when it was needed. Like I said, I like these dragons and all the crazy that comes with them.

OF ALL THE BOOKS IN THE SERIES, I LOVED THIS ONE BEST.
WHY?
BECAUSE, FINALLY THERE WAS SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

All the previous books had a similar plot pattern which I didn't mind, but this one was solid gold because FOR ONCE, the dragon who gets turned into a human is actually seeking for it, and he's okay with having a short lifespan for the female he loves.

ARYSTEON made my heart all tingly and warm with his gruff but protective ways. Unlike the other dragons we've met who have a superiority complex against humans, Arysteon used to mingle with humans once upon a time, which explains why he can speak the human language and is also comfortable to be around them, not to mention he's not prejudiced or lofty. When the lonely Arysteon catches a whiff of a wonderful scent, he hunts it down leading him to Leyloni and baby Serek who needed shelter from the harsh elements of the cold, rain and lurking beasts. For his selfish reason, Arysteon offers her a safe haven in his cave and WE ALL KNOW HOW TOUCHY and POSSESSIVE DRAGONS ARE ABOUT THEIR LAIRS!! For him to share it? Speaks volumes about his character. I adored the way Arysteon took care of Leyloni and Serek. I adored him both as a dragon and as a human. Amongst all the males we've met in the series, I honestly can tell you that Arysteon was the better male leading character. He was sweet, caring and accepting and it made me sad to know this book will be the last installation to the series.

LEYLONI ran away with baby Serek when her village was attacked by the Bone Wraiths, killing most of the female just to keep the male. If you've followed the series this far, obviously you'll know there's a shortage of men WHICH explains why our heroines are all off hunting for a dragon mate of their own. Why Dragon? Beats me. But it's hot. Anyways, Leyloni herself has too much on her mind to even think about romance but when this gentle yet giant dragon offers her sanctuary and protected their lives, how could she say no? The more she gets to know Arysteon, the more she likes him and at the same time the attraction builds.

OVERALL this was seriously my favourite of the series, and I'm glad that the author chose to write Arysteon in such a different manner than the other male dragons. Trust me, it can get old when every one of them just turns angry as hulk after they were turned, but I liked how Arysteon weighed his owns pros and cons of falling for a human. Lonely and love starved as he was, meeting Leyloni was probably the best thing that could ever happen to him in his millennia alive.

Can be read as a standalone book

Ewen though this book is the second one from this author in a group series, it can be read as a standalone.
Leyloni is on the run from the people/beings that destroyed her village and killed her clan. Her and her best friends' baby boy are the only ones left.
She is almost caught by a beast when a dragon makes his appearance.
Arysteon is also the last of his clan. So he can sympathize with her.
Is the legend true that once a dragon is touched by a human the dragon forever belongs to them?
Read to find out what happens as these two learn that though they may have differences fate has more planned for them to bring them together.

I do so love protective dragons!
This story draws me in quickly, because of the deadly situation Leyloni is in as she flees into the forest with an infant she’s ill equipped to care for.
I love that Arysteon initiates the encounter that changes his life (and Leyloni’s). They have common ground, each having faced so many losses. Their relationship builds beautifully during their journey. Such an exciting story! Full of sweet moments, hot romance and battles with enemies. I love it!

Ok I didn’t really liked the first book I read in this series , was cool and all but that’s it ...so why try to read another ? Well ...I saw that was different authors so maybe I could like this one ...the history looks intriguing enough so ...whatever .

I like that the environment in this books is jungles and all ,well the other one was just a boring cave so this is more interesting so far , the kid Serek that Leyloni has to take care give us a new sense of purpose the other one didn’t had too , I’m just really In the beginning but this one has potential.

“Leyloni brushed Serek’s tears away with her thumbs. The gesture was enough to quiet him, and his cries finally gave way to soft hiccups. “Everything will be okay, Serek. I…I know I am not your mother, but I will take care of you. I promise.” She cupped her hand, dipped it into the stream, and raised it to his lips, helping him drink.”

Uh, I’m liking even more in this one we have another characteristic of the culture , Mother Eurynome the great spirit who watched over the forest , this is getting even more interesting, I like when we are introduced to the culture of the world were the book is , this makes things more interesting and ...real ? Let’s get with less dull hahaha

“The dragon reared back, opened its maw wide, and angled it toward the sky. Runoff from the canopy poured into its mouth. The beast closed its mouth, shook its head from side to side, and turned to spit the water out into the jungle foliage.
“Those creatures have a foul taste,” the dragon said in a voice as low-pitched and rumbling as thunder.”

He can speak with her ? Cool I’m liking even more , I hope they don’t touch and go all heat because this takes a little of the fun , you know where is the romance if they don’t even know each other and is just insta love ?

“Serek grunted. For a few moments, he didn’t breathe, and his face turned a dark shade of red. Then came a vibrating burst of sound that Leyloni felt against her arm, “which had been cradling his bottom.
Arysteon’s scaled brow ridges fell, the spines along his back rose, and he stretched his neck, moving his head closer. His tongue flicked out again. Not a moment after it had slid back into his mouth, he recoiled with a snarl, spines slapping flat. “How can a creature so small produce so foul a stench?”
Serek giggled
The dragon pushed up on his front legs and twisted around, swinging his head toward the entrance of the cave. His sides heaved with several deep breaths”

Hahahahaha OMG I like Arysteon he’s funny without even trying hahahaha .The way the author is described his “human” form is really good too , we can easily visualize him , and in my mind he really looks like the one in the cover , ok this book is absolutely better than the first I read in this series that was To Wake a Dragon , seriously in this book the author give us sooo much more information, like the details of Arysteon cock hahahaha And I’m really loving it , I won’t lie .

“I will blast this whole forest to cinder if that is what it takes to keep you and Serek safe. No creature, whether human, dragon, or otherwise, shall do you harm without facing my fury. You are mine, Leyloni.”

Damn...this was hot and romantic hahaha a little murderous but hot anyways hahaha . But I’m serious...what is the problem of this people with caves ? Are theyngoing to pass all the f*cking book in a cave too ? C’mon for gods sake ....

“Besides, though Arysteon himself had not changed Serek’s diaper cloths, he’d seen Leyloni do so many times over the last few days. It couldn’t have been that difficult.
Serek pressed his little lips together. His body tensed, his face turned red, and he grunted.
Arysteon’s smile died, and he clamped his teeth together to keep his tongue inside his mouth”

Hahaha poor Arysteon, and finally they are coming out of that damn cave . Damn now the things are really getting good he can transform in a dragon again !!!

“He snapped his head down and clamped his jaws over the female with the deer skull who had been standing over Leyloni, catching her from the midsection up. Blood ran over his tongue, bitter with a tang of iron. He growled with intensified fury.”

.

Damn poor Arysteon , the guy is in heat because of that weird comet and can even taste his mate because of their son hahahaha

“A battle between two dragons was far too dangerous for humans to be near, especially when those dragons were in the throes of Heat”..

Uhuull !! Action finally again !! I got to the conclusion that ...this book has seriously boring moments , has little funny moments and some really good ones with action and all , this looks like a ok book too but why has some parts that are so boring ? but whatever I’m reading and even if the action moments are rare they are good . And Arysteon doesn’t has wings ? Not a time in this book has he flown or talked about wings , I got another conclusion too , I think he isn’t a alpha , he has thought about meeting another dragon to talk and all , the other book that I read in this series the other guy Drazak he said he was a alpha and was all a arrogant asshole , nothing like Arysteon , who is a cool guy . But I didn’t liked Arysteon killed the dragon called Pavoss like ....f*ck dragons are so rare man .

“The other huntresses remained on the ground. Sigrun whistled, and with a lurch, the platform rose.
Arysteon grunted, tightening his hold on Leyloni’s hand. His toes curled, making his claws scrape the wood beneath him, and his tail swept side to side restlessly. Leyloni couldn’t help but smile. Her dragon was nervous. She eased a little closer to him, nudging his shoulder with hers.
“What a brave dragon you are,” she cooed teasingly into his ear.
He looked down at her, his violet gaze blazing. “I will have vengeance for you treating me like a hatchling, little human.”

Uh the funny parts ...are rare like dragons but good nevertheless. So I finished...nothing REALLY exciting happen at all but that was a good book so ...that’s it ...

SUMMARY
Leyloni with 1yo Serek has been running from her village for 3 days now. Everyone was killed by Bone Wraiths. They're chased by a predator. When she turns to fight, there's a bright flash, and then just a black spot where the beast had been. Then she sees the dragon who has it in his mouth.

He spits the creature out, uses the rain to rinse his mouth of yucky taste. Leyloni screams. Dragons are stories, and no beast talks. He convinces her she's safe with him, then leads her to his lair.

Arysteon likes having a female in his lair, hasn't seen a dragoness in 200+ years. It had been her scent, not the baby's cries, that had drawn him to her in the forest. He keeps thinking Mine. She says she needs a fire. He's eager to provide. You gather the fuel, I'll provide the spark with my lightning. When she comforts the hatchling, he wants to sing songs to it. When she says Thank you for the fire, he wants to sing a song he's never sung, the one for his mate. He debates internally about whether he wants her to touch him or not. They introduce themselves. She asks where his clan are. As far as he knows, he's the only one left. She tells her story. When she snuggles with Serek, he feels protective. She asks if the stories are true, that if she touches him, he'll become human. Then she falls asleep. He thinks it'd be nice to have a clan again.

Leyloni wakes when Serek does. She gets dressed. Arysteon brings fruits for them to eat. He invites them to stay as long as they like. Serek has a messy diaper, Arysteon is shocked such a smell can come from such a small creature. She washes the diaper, then comes in to find them playing. Arysteon lays his spiky tail down, Serek crawls to it. Just before Serek touches it, Arysteon lifts his tail, making Serek laugh which makes Arysteon laugh. Then Arysteon moves and lays his tail down. Their playing lifts her spirits from her loss. He asks where they're going. To the Snow Tree tribe. They used to trade with the Moss tribe. She explains that Serek would've been traded there when he was old enough in order to keep bloodlines clean, that males are few, Serek is first in her 20 years. So young. I am a woman. Yes, indeed. Arysteon tells her only males born to his clan, all left to seek females. He stayed to lead when his father died. They searched for safe place, and when found it, he was only one left. “It is a very long way to the sea, and it is dangerous for you and hatchling to make that journey alone. You may stay here, with me. I will protect you both. There is nothing in this part of the forest that can stand against me.” She wants to say yes, but Serek has to father a new generation to keep humanity alive.

Leyloni wakes from a dream reliving the Bone Wraiths attack. She cries. Arysteon asks if she's ill. Mourning my tribe. He starts humming. She knows he understands. He offers to listen. She tells how the Bone Wraiths attacked. “They are no longer human, they are monsters. They pillage and raid other tribes, stealing and raping males, feasting on human flesh, and wear the bones of their fallen foes like armor. Their blood has been corrupted by greed.” She almost gives him a hug, he doesn't move. Arysteon offers to hunt so she can rest. His voice was a little sad. Did he want her to touch him?

EVALUATION
Leyloni saves her best friend's baby, then meets her sweetheart. They don't have much conflict in their relationship, it's all from outside forces. Serek is a cutie!

RECOMMENDATION
Adults who like paranormal romances and babies

POSSIBLE TRIGGERS (SPOILERS)
Sex: masturbation, multiple scenes
Language: none
Violence: memory of mass murder, animal attack, cannibal killing, dragon killing

CRITIQUE (SPOILERS)
I disagree with Pavoss's fate. He yields, Arysteon should've let him go

It only takes one night to lose everything you love, for it to all come burning down around you.

THE BLURB

For Leyloni that the night that the Bone Wraiths attack her tribe, and she’s left fleeing with an infant child. The sole survivors. Her only hope is to find another tribe and seek shelter and safety there. But in the jungle she’s being hunted…

Arysteon’s loved centuries alone, longing for a clan of his own. He’s haunted by the loss of his dragon-kin. Then he smells the tantalising scent of a female… A human female. Tracking her through the jungle is just too easy.

TONE OF THE BOOK

To Love A Dragon is meant to be a light hearted adventure, but some of the sensitive topics bring it at times into a serious nature since it lightly explores the concept of depression and post-traumatic healing.

SENSITIVE TOPICS

To Love A Dragon is a book for mature readers. There are numerous sex scenes, violence and some mass-murder through war.

SERIES SYNOPSIS

To Love A Dragon is a standalone novel in the multi-author Venys Needs Men series. Other authors to contribute to the series are Amanda Milo, Naomi Lucas and Poppy Rhys. You can see all the books contributed on the series Goodreads page. Tiffany Roberts has contributed two novels towards the series.

Each novel focuses on a different couple. Furthermore, all novels and their romantic stories end with a happily ever after.

To Love A Dragon is 268 pages long, making it nearly as long as a full-featured typical romance novel.

REVIEW

This novel was uniquely fresh in the Venys Needs Men series. Most novels fall within a very stereotypical approach of a dragon being turned to human form mostly against his will. To Love A Dragon was the first to have a dragon very willingly shape-shift to mortal form. Unlike the other novels in the series there was no angsty-anger and confused emotions for the characters to deal with. Instead it focused on a classical and realistic romance where the characters fall in love through mutual compassion, communication and understanding. It was so refreshing!

I would have loved to see more on the world, especially challenges of interacting with other humans. There was such a focus on both characters wanting a clan, and yet the novel showed very little interaction with other characters.

FINAL WORD

A refreshing take on the Venys Needs Men series formula; I loved how the characters chose to be together. A fun adventure book filled with action and passion.

RECOMMENDED BOOKS AND AUTHORS

If you liked To Love A Dragon, then definitely read some of the other books in the Venys Needs Men series. Other authors to contribute to the series are Naomi Lucas, Tiffany Roberts, and Poppy Rhys.

If you are a fan of dragon-shifter stories, Ruby Dixon has also written the Fireblood Dragons series. A fun adventure set in a post apocalyptic world that’s been taken over by mad dragons. Only when the dragons meet their soul mates, a human woman, that their madness clears. The first book in this series is Fire In His Blood.

Erin Tate (also writing as Celia Kyle) has also written The Dragons of Preor series. The first book is Jarek(read our review). Shape-shifting dragons have landed on Earth, seeking women as mates. However not everyone are happy at the new alliance between Earth and Preor…

A great addition to this world !!

I loved it !!! Wondered why several of the VENYS Needs Men Authors wrote two books , and not this dynamic duo !!

In this book Arysteon is a Dragon, that is awoken by a peculiar aroma.
Once moving , he followed this smell to two bedraggled , drenched, humans , a girl and a youngling . They were fleeing from a horrible scene , running for their lives.
He felt the nerd to help.....

Arysteon and Layloni has a beautiful , lovely story ahead of them . I felt that this book, is a welcome addition to this series, and it was a very easy read.
So glad I got it !!

I love Arysteon and Leyloni's story. As Leyloni and Serek are fleeing the tragedy in her village, they are tracked down by a dragon. Initially Leyloni is afraid until Arysteon talks to her which is something she did not know was possible. But she heard of the stories about touching a dragon. It takes her awhile but finally she touches him and he becomes her dragon man and mate. Arysteon is happy with his new clan and does everything in his power to love and protect Leyloni and Serek. Lots of action, romance and sexy times are in store for these two and she will not share once they reach their destination.

From great tragedy comes an everlasting love.

Leyloni is on the run with baby Serek after her tribe is attacked and killed by another clan. Arysteon also lost his clan and has been alone for decades. Fate steps in and leads them to each other and a great love is born. I really loved that in this book the Dragon wants a mate and to be touched. In many of the other Venys books the Dragons are REALLY unhappy about becoming mortal. Those are awesome books, too, this was just a wonderfully hot and sexy love story. I hope the authors decide to write more Venys books.

Another great one!

Some spoilers..

Although the first one was really good, I found I liked this one more. There wasn’t any forced mate and then falling for each other. They found each other and the attraction grew. I like that another dragon was introduced to the story. Only thing I wish I could’ve read was an entwined story between the first book dragon and this one. Other than that, great story.

It does have a pregnancy trope, he falls first, touch her and die… always great.

Interesting world

Fabulous story. Lots of danger packed into this story. The authors have a perfect blend of action, adventure, compassion, and steam. I like the innocence of the characters not knowing what to expect when they touch. A wingless but powerful dragon was a nice spin. Ary was kind and gentle except when he wasn't. The world you have created for the story seemed as beautiful as it was dangerous. Great read. Reviewed by Who She Reads.

I just loved Arysteon and Leyloni’s story. The world building continues to be fascinating and exciting. I would love to read more about this world and any new couples. I have now read every book in this series and I have loved each one. I would highly recommend this book and this series.

To Love a Dragon had some good suspense, but I wasn’t as engaged with it as I was with To Tame a Dragon. I think I needed more world building or conflict to be really invested. I usually find this author quite strong in those departments. Oh well.

Side note: I actually started reading it a while ago but only added it to my “currently reading” shelf today.

During the first 1/2 of the book, I was bored. Both of the main characters and the story just seemed blah. I almost did not finish a couple of times but kept going. The hero, Arysteon, eventually won me over. He gave up everything and was so kind and sweet. Some action kicked in and the story did get better. Overall, an ok read

Aerysteon's reactions to Serek's mess is priceless. Nothing says love from a baby like the overwhelming smell of a full diaper, the mushy kisses and the babble that comes from a playful moment. For a dragon who has been alone for centuries, and missing family for even longer, this new intrusion into his life quickly becomes one he doesn't want to lose.

I DNF'd at 35%. Honestly I just got bord. There is nothing here that is different from the other books in the series. Except the kid, which surprisingly was the only character I kind of liked. There is not enough to convince me to continue beyond this point in the book. I mean, I stopped before the sexy stuff would really get going. WTF?

Another hit from Tiffany Roberts!

I’ve enjoyed all of the Venys Needs Men books, but he two by Tiffany Roberts are my favourite. Falthyris is dominating, reluctant and angry, Arysteon throws himself into the bond with happy abandon.

Excellent stories, well worth the read.

My favorite of the bunch!

I love this one! I love the fact that he was stalking her, and it was mutual attraction and desire. It just warmed the cockles of my heart. Also, it was super steamy and hot, too!

Great read

Another Great wild dragon read. Arysteon is my favorite this far. He was thoughtful, caring, kind, and just as sweet and protective as can be. He's the type of mate that every girl craves.
