“Leyloni brushed Serek’s tears away with her thumbs. The gesture was enough to quiet him, and his cries finally gave way to soft hiccups. “Everything will be okay, Serek. I…I know I am not your mother, but I will take care of you. I promise.” She cupped her hand, dipped it into the stream, and raised it to his lips, helping him drink.”
“The dragon reared back, opened its maw wide, and angled it toward the sky. Runoff from the canopy poured into its mouth. The beast closed its mouth, shook its head from side to side, and turned to spit the water out into the jungle foliage.
“Those creatures have a foul taste,” the dragon said in a voice as low-pitched and rumbling as thunder.”
“Serek grunted. For a few moments, he didn’t breathe, and his face turned a dark shade of red. Then came a vibrating burst of sound that Leyloni felt against her arm, “which had been cradling his bottom.
Arysteon’s scaled brow ridges fell, the spines along his back rose, and he stretched his neck, moving his head closer. His tongue flicked out again. Not a moment after it had slid back into his mouth, he recoiled with a snarl, spines slapping flat. “How can a creature so small produce so foul a stench?”
Serek giggled
The dragon pushed up on his front legs and twisted around, swinging his head toward the entrance of the cave. His sides heaved with several deep breaths”
“I will blast this whole forest to cinder if that is what it takes to keep you and Serek safe. No creature, whether human, dragon, or otherwise, shall do you harm without facing my fury. You are mine, Leyloni.”
“Besides, though Arysteon himself had not changed Serek’s diaper cloths, he’d seen Leyloni do so many times over the last few days. It couldn’t have been that difficult.
Serek pressed his little lips together. His body tensed, his face turned red, and he grunted.
Arysteon’s smile died, and he clamped his teeth together to keep his tongue inside his mouth”
“He snapped his head down and clamped his jaws over the female with the deer skull who had been standing over Leyloni, catching her from the midsection up. Blood ran over his tongue, bitter with a tang of iron. He growled with intensified fury.”
“A battle between two dragons was far too dangerous for humans to be near, especially when those dragons were in the throes of Heat”..
“The other huntresses remained on the ground. Sigrun whistled, and with a lurch, the platform rose.
Arysteon grunted, tightening his hold on Leyloni’s hand. His toes curled, making his claws scrape the wood beneath him, and his tail swept side to side restlessly. Leyloni couldn’t help but smile. Her dragon was nervous. She eased a little closer to him, nudging his shoulder with hers.
“What a brave dragon you are,” she cooed teasingly into his ear.
He looked down at her, his violet gaze blazing. “I will have vengeance for you treating me like a hatchling, little human.”
