In his letters, John expresses delight at believers who are "walking in the truth": behaving with that integrity which reflects the gospel. This involves not just correct doctrine and proper outward behavior, but also love for God and fellow believers. It's this love, John writes, that shows that the truth of the gospel has really been grasped, not as an abstract idea but as what it is, the very life of God himself at work in his people. These nine studies from Tom Wright help us become believers who are "walking in the truth" in our own day--people in whom the very life of God is at work for all to see.
N. T. Wright is the former Bishop of Durham in the Church of England (2003-2010) and one of the world's leading Bible scholars. He is now serving as the chair of New Testament and Early Christianity at the School of Divinity at the University of St. Andrews. He has been featured on ABC News, Dateline NBC, The Colbert Report, and Fresh Air, and he has taught New Testament studies at Cambridge, McGill, and Oxford universities. Wright is the award-winning author of Surprised by Hope, Simply Christian, The Last Word, The Challenge of Jesus, The Meaning of Jesus (coauthored with Marcus Borg), as well as the much heralded series Christian Origins and the Question of God.
I really enjoyed this study! I thought it was the perfect blend of information and reflection. I think 1, 2, and 3 John can sometimes get overlooked (I know I certainly have), but I feel like I learned a lot. I’m so glad I got to go through this study with our Wednesday night women’s class!
While this study was posed to me as “for-all” I think some level of Biblical knowledge/understanding is helpful. Abstract and/or dense questions intimidated me but also encouraged me to humbly ask questions and our group to make space for multiple perspectives/perceptions…
Like the other books in this series, this one is quite helpful in leading a small-group Bible study. It's nothing revolutionary, and there's nothing in the material that doesn't come from N. T. Wright's For Everyone commentary, but having the discussion questions written out here saves me probably an hour of work for each group session. That makes the price of this book worthwhile for me. Our group went through each of these studies and enjoyed it very much.
I was a little intimidated by this book at first because it was written by Wright. Whenever I think of him, I imagine heady theological scholarship. For some context, I was reading this book with a small group. We read it together in less than 10 weeks. What was helpful was this book seemed to be written in such a way that it lends itself VERY well for small group discussions. There was not much prep work needed either. Every chapter breaks down the scripture (verses) to read and weaves in additional (helpful) commentary as questions are listed.
This was a really nice book to read along with the letters of John. I thought it had some excellent questions and points, and I'll be sure to read more of these study guides in the future. 4/5 stars from me.
