Born into poverty and orphaned by five, he is thrown into the wicked Edwardian Workhouse system. Terrified by cruelty, he is helped to escape by an older boy into the calmness of the Northumbrian countryside. After being taken prisoner in World War One, he witnesses the hideous murder of a loved one but cannot do anything about it. At war’s end, he seeks justice but comes up against a corrupt, heretical system that has no intention of helping a lowly soldier when the peace has just been won. Falsely informed justice has been served, he spends the interwar years building up the farm when a chance encounter shocks him to the core, and he must search for the truth.
