Boooooh! I died in the final battle :( But I will definitely reread (replay) it and hope for a better outcome!
The writing is a bit worse than in the second book, and there are some confusing parts here and there. But all is good, because that just means that they learnt from their mistakes. Which means that book 3 that it's around the corner will be AWESOME!!
Even with all those little flaws, I enjoyed the murder mystery and setting more than the story in book 2, which will push me to do that reread pretty soon!
I had an absolute blast reading through this adventure while recovering from an illness today. I was nervous that the book would feel too much like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book which, while fun, always left me feeling like the quality of the book was sacrificed for the gimmick. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised with an engaging, fun, and interactive book that scratched my itch for D&D (or at least, part of it).
The narrative itself is a fun murder mystery, with memorable characters, reasonable suspicions all around, and a few red herrings. The resolution is perhaps a little obvious, but maybe just because of my sensational detective skills, (ha!). The magic items are interesting, and the locations are all fairly laid out. I really enjoy the tactical elements of combat, so I printed and used the maps that are available for free, and was able to spice things up a little bit. Even still, combat was very simple and left me wanting a little more. However, it would be perfect for a new player just beginning to learn the rules, and so I'm not necessarily the target audience. I understand the limitations of writing a book for solo players of any type, anywhere between 1st and 4th level (it's definitely better for level 1, by the way).
Overall, a really great way to spend an afternoon and certainly worth the money. I'm looking forward to other content produced by Obvious Mimic and will be reading their next publication soon. I would recommend this to my friends Tom and Matt, my Dad, and will be using it as the framework to play a one-shot with my spouse, Abby.
A fun solo D&D 5e adventure for a character of level 1 or 2. (I actually played through it with a "mini-party" of two Level 2 PCs, making the combat encounters slightly less challenging than they would have been for one character, but that was my choice.) The story is a small-town murder mystery, with a small cast of colorful characters to aid and investigate and a profusion of clues (and some red herrings).
I’ve done a few of these Solo D&D books and this was definitely one of the better ones. Really had a great atmosphere and story, kept me engaged and excited to continue the game each day. Absolutely loved the music you could download with it, what amazing tune. Listened to it every time I played.
A very fun adventure! What a blast. There were points where it drug a bit but the mystery and adventure aspect made up for it greatly. I highly recommend and am looking forward to the next installment.
A fun story and a great way to scratch that D&D itch when you don’t have a group. I will definitely play it again if only to try out different characters. Looking forward to the next product from Obvious Mimic!
Absolutely AWESOME solo D&D adventure. I played with a 1st level Loxodon Knowledge Cleric and was challenged. It changes based on the choices you make, so you can replay it with a different outcome. Highly recommended!
Didn’t want to stop playing, thoroughly enjoyed my first experience with dnd. I loved choose you’re own adventures when I was younger, I guess I still do at 45
