Fire and Desire #1

The Flame King's Captive

Rate this book
He snatched me from the jaws of death for one reason—to be his.

I was a dead king’s sacrificial bride, until his murderer claimed me as his. Zabriel invaded my country of Maledin on the back of a monstrous, fire-breathing dragon and took me prisoner.

The lethal Zabriel towers over me in steel plate armor, and he could easily crush the life out of me—but the Flame King isn’t interested in harming me. Instead, he destroys everyone who has hurt me in a storm of fire and vengeance.

There’s malignant rot deep within my country. My family has vanished along with whole villages of people. As I desperately try to find those who are missing, my body and heart awaken under a powerful and alarming force.

Zabriel sets my soul ablaze every time he growls, “Mine.” He calls me Omega. The rarest. The most vulnerable. The one he craves to possess and protect.

When evil forces in Maledin threaten everyone I know and love, there’s only one person who is strong enough to help me defeat them, and the only place where I’m safe from an ancient foe is in the arms of the Flame King.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: The Flame King’s Captive is a slow-burn non-shifter MF omegaverse romance set in a fantasy world of magic and dragonriders. Zabriel is a jealous and possessive Alpha, and Isavelle is a sweet but strong virgin Omega heroine. This is the first book in the Fire and Desire trilogy. It contains steamy content that increases with each subsequent book and ends on a cliffhanger.

This was...not what I expected.

So going into this, we're warned that the MMC is OTT J/P, right? Yeah, sold.

Add in dragon riding, omegaverse, and I'M HERE FOR IT.

What you actually get is a cinnamon roll MMC and a whiny af FMC that annoyed me more often than not.

The former, I don't entirely mind, the latter I most definitely did.

Zabriel has the patience of a thousand suns for sure, I just wanted him to be more aggressive and demanding. Granted he was indeed over the top jealous possessive, I expected more alphahole instead of sweet alpha.

Don't get me freaking started on her. This homegirl had the biggest case of FMC denial I've read, she's the "I don't want to wear these nice dresses, I want to wear a maid's smock" type of chick and all she does is complain. This book could've been a hundred pages shorter if her repetitive thoughts were cut out. Zabriel lauds her stubbornness, but it wasn't a strong FMC stubborn, just a stupid stubborn. And the way she'd ice out Zabriel and refuse help? I JUST WANTED TO SHAKE HER.

Dragons were neat, the plot is meh, some Zabriel's lines were top notch.

Ultimately, I'm intrigued enough to read the sequels, but I wouldn't HIGHLY recommend someone read this.

Rating 2.5 rounded up to 3.

Lilith Vincent is writing some omega!!! And I gotta say you know me. I hate cliffhangers, and this one is a doozy!!!

Isavelle had a hard life being taken and beaten, starved, so much bad stuff has happened to her, and my heart broke for her. Now she's forced to marry a guy she doesn't want. But before it could happen, dragons appeared again, and she was saved by Zabriel, who is the leader of the ones who were attacking. She's saved by him she's also spooked by him and his dragon. And spooked by the things he says about mates, alphas, and such
So she does run away from him, but is found and taken by Zab.. and I kid you not this man is so smitten with her he let's her do anything she wants, few times i wanted to shake Isavelle for always pushing him away and pushing her dragon away. It takes a while for her to warm up to Zab and his alpha ways 😈😈😈.

There are a few side charas you wonder if you can trust or side eye.

THIS BOOK HAS MY NAME ALL OVER IT 😤

Edit: I am so sad, and so disappointed in this book. Not even Lilith Vincent, who writes some of the filthiest dirty talk I've ever read, could save it 😭 We started out with a page full of trigger warnings calling the MMC a possessive alphahole, and I'm wondering where the heck was that guy we were warned about? this may as well be the most greenflag 'alphahole' I have ever seen.

Secondly, the FMC was so horribly written! She was wishy-washy, and her trauma was not explained properly. She kept moaning about not being a good omega, and she didn't even do much to improve herself. She was stubborn but not in a good way, and she knew her faults yet she was pleasantly satisfied with pity crying over her fate, boo-hoo.

Third, the smut doesn't even start I'm sorry? this is a 500 page omegaverse? what the heck? the slowburn was painful, and it didn't even pay off. That ending was ridiculous, and at a point I was watching a horror letsplay on youtube instead of reading this, because that was more satisfying than the sex scene 🙁

I am so sad, I had so much high hopes from this one, only to be let down like this.

that ending? rude.
also the reason I refuse staring unfinished series whenever I can.

This is a omegaverse (no RH) with a strong fantasy focus. Which is great, because I actually do love some plot occasionally.
We follow Isavelle who's grown up very poor and sacrificed herself to some maniac cultists for her family's sake. Her everyday life now consists of abuse and loneliness; before she's had a pretty normal human upbringing.
Unfortunately she's now to be actually sacrificed and burned alive, BUT conveniently a very sexy man on a very huge dragon comes to the rescue.

Zabriel could run for most honorable man out there, easily. Very alpha but also very much a snack (with the patience of a saint). He grew up within a classic alpha-beta-omega society, and once he smells Isavelle and recognizes her as his Omega he's a goner. Turns out Isavelle's human upbringing and Zabriel's omegaverse society actually are the same people. Only difference being there's a 500 year span that happened in-between. Our man took a 500 year long nap, and honestly who can blame him? I crave that for myself sometimes.

Anyway due to that unfortunate 500 years in-between life and society changed somewhat, and while Isavelle might be his Omega she sure as fuck doesn't know what that means or if she even wants to know. All she really wants is to get back to her family, you know the people she submitted herself to religious men for (who got a lot more questionable things going on inside their brains than just your basic male power complex).

Did I mention dragons?

ೃ⁀➷ 4.5⭐️

Lisez si vous aimez :

🔥 dragons
🔥 touch her and die 💀
🔥 Alpha/Omega
🔥 fated mate

4,55 Goodreads rating for a book that reads like a Wattpad fic?

We get it, the MMC is so huge. Such a big man. He's big with a huge figure. Big hands. Huge hands. Wow, so massive. So enormous.
The FMC is so small. Such a tiny girl. She's so small, so short. Small hands. Wow, so tiny. So fragile. So short.

And of course Zabriel is the most handsome man in the world and Isavella is the most beautiful woman in the world. Isavella of course describes herself as;

“I have no idea. I’m not important, or beautiful, or noble. I stopped trying to understand why the High Priest was so obsessed with me long ago.

The quintessential Wattpad FMC who's soooo beautiful and kind and noble but of course she does not see herself as such 👌

- - -

"I don’t want an Omega who will always quietly and obediently do exactly what she’s told"

This you a couple of chapters back?

An Omega should instantly melt when she’s given an order from her Alpha, uttering a breathy, cock-hardening, Yes, Alpha, before her lips part for mine.

- - -

“Grandmother,” I growl in warning. I don’t like the witch tormenting my mate, and I don’t like her calling Isavelle girl either.

This you a couple of chapters back?

I gaze down at the girl nestled in my arms

With such a beautiful cover and enticing title, I was immediately drawn to this book! Then once I read the blurb, I was even MORE excited to get my hands on it! I mean, I literally rushed through my previous current read just so I could start reading this one.
There's:
* Dragons
* Stolen brides
* Fated mates
* Omegaverse
There was just so much potential for a thrilling and spectacular story!
But,

I gave it a good go, but at 179 pages in, I just couldn't push myself to go any further. And believe me, I had been pushing myself already for the last 40 pages or so.
Look, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade because it looks like there are a lot of people who were/are looking forward to this book. And don't get me wrong, YOU may still enjoy it. I just didn't.

I'm not really a big fan of instalove. I like tension, some angst, and a whole lot of build-up that purports to a big bang! I understand, though, that when writing in terms of "fated mates" it may be a little difficult to avoid that. Maybe the author recognized a dilemma there as well because whereas the Hero, Zabriel, instantly recognized the heroine, Isavelle, as his mate, she did not. Great! We now have a perfect opportunity to create a situation that would allow for some of that delicious tension to build. So the hero is tripping all over himself because after being cursed to sleep 500 years he wakes up and not only reclaims his kingdom but also finds his fated mate! He starts throwing out all these "strange" words while talking to the heroine and, even though she's both visually and audibly confused by them, he doesn't think it pertinent to maybe elaborate on it. Enter my biggest pet peeve to encounter while reading. To me, all of that is indicative of this author maybe using "the art" of willing ignorance to drive the plot of their story. Meaning anything that a normal, sane person in actual reality would do, think, or say would purposely be overlooked and not considered when forming a character's response and/or reaction to a situation. Mind you, I didn't stop reading at this point. I knew it wouldn't be fair to assume that it would be that way for certain, so I kept going in hopes that maybe my suspicions were wrong.

This tactic was indeed used and it was used primarily for our heroine, Isavelle. Aside from being whiney and stubborn about 90% of the time, Isavelle was a walking contradiction. Zabriel leaves her a chest of fine dresses in her extravagant room he's had prepared for her and she's all like:
"Bring me a plain, maid's dress!"
Then later during the coronation is jealous of the nobleman's daughters in all their fine, formal attire, and when asked later to attend the coronation feast, basically tells Zabriel it would be embarrassing for him to be seen with her in her rags...like that's all she has or had access to! She constantly refused Zabriel's advances or notions of them being together (which hey, I get it-- she just met him) but would later be internally pining after him and then when faced with the opportunity to get closer to him again, would immediately refuse him and act as if it is the last thing she would ever want. Then when he's telling her that she is his mate and he wants her to be his queen/wife, she's like:

Then one paragraph later is to herself and thinking things like, "If only Zabriel were a regular soldier, then maybe we could be together," despite him telling her time and time again that he wants her and I'm pretty certain that the king doesn't need approval from anyone else other than himself to do what he wants. It just didn't make much sense and these same kind of scenarios just kept happening repeatedly. But I guess without all this confusion and constant misunderstandings, how would the story progress or have any "real" length to it, ya know...

I think the concept was awesome and I really wanted to love it, but it just didn't work for me unfortunately.

Absolutely outstanding!!!! Captive of the Flame King was beautifully written and one of my favorite fantasy romances of all time!!! This is my first book by Lilth Vincent writing as Chloe Chastaine and I was totally captivated by this book from beginning to end. I knew after reading a teaser for this book and seeing this beautiful cover that I needed to put this on my must read list and I wasn't disappointed!!! Zabriel is so fucking intoxicating and while I'm always drawn to the morally gray characters or the villains this darkly seductive dragon with his gorgeous long black hair and fiery eyes who just happens to ride the biggest baddest black dragon and who will soon become king and who's kisses and touches are like something from a wet dream checked box after box on my naughty scale and the fangs had me over the moon because....ya! I love a guy who bites!!😂 He didn't take what he wanted. He set out to thoroughly seduce and conquer his fated mate and it worked! While I do love men who take what they want, if I'm willing.I'm the type of woman who wants a dominant alpha, but that doesn't mean I want to conform or be told what to do and Isavella was the same. Isavella was a strong woman who had been abused by the brethren again and again but they couldn't break her and so when Zabriel saves her from them he has to work at gaining her trust and love and the more she fights fate the worst it gets for her. This is a slow burn romance with very hot foreplay that has you as slicked up as Isavella!😉 Their be all kinds of fabulous side characters but honestly the dragons stole the show! Between Zabriel's dragon Scourge a giant black dragon with red eyes and a attitude that was just as big and the beautiful young female turquoise and gold dragon Esmeral who is Isavella Dragon and Scourge's mate and Dragonmaster Stesha's dragon the beautiful and fierce
Nilak ! She's the queen of those dragons and knows it!!! This did end with a hell of a cliffhanger and I'm stoked to see how it all pans out! The shadow king is no longer standing in the shadows letting the brethren do his dirty work and by taking Zabriel's fated mate the lines have been drawn and the flame king will burn the world down to get his woman back! Lilth Vincent is a fantastic storyteller and I can't wait for more from this world she's created! I will leave you with the teaser that started it all for me!! Enjoy😉Until next time Luv's💕💋

Zabriel’s red eyes burn with wicked delight. As he smiles, I get a close-up view of his strong white teeth and see how his canines are longer and pointier than they should be. It doesn’t seem right. It doesn’t seem human. “Are you a vampire?” I blurt out. “Am I a what?” “A cursed corpse that drinks human blood. They’re supposed to only exist in stories, but you’re only supposed to exist in stories, so I don’t know what to believe anymore. Your red eyes. That hungry expression. Your pointed teeth. If you bite me, I’ll scream.” His pupils dilate, and he mutters something under his breath that sounds like, Fuck, I hope so. “What?” He smiles again and touches the tip of his tongue to a pointed tooth. “What, my dragines? Made for biting necks and sucking blood? Good guess. Very good guess, sha’len.”

The Flame King's Captive was one of *those* reads *chefs kiss*. It was definitely longer than what I usually read. The size of it was first intimidating, but I was soon drawn into the world and its characters. Y'all. The MMC is freaking patient and patient with the FMC :') LOVE IT. I cannot wait to read book 2!!

Title: The Flame King's Captive
Author: Chloe Chastaine
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Type: Book 1 of 3 from Fire and Desire series
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:
4.25 Stars

Life in Maledin had not been easy for Isavelle Harrow. While saved from the cruel Brethren, being Zabriel’s captive was not any easier especially when another dark force threatened the world they knew.

I’m unfamiliar with Omegaverse, and I’m glad there are explanations of the relationship dynamics. Though some parts felt slow and repetitive, I loved the storyline and the world.

"You’re my bride and my mate, but you don’t have to believe me just because I say so. I don’t need to persuade you to melt for me because it’s going to happen anyway, and it’s going to be fucking delicious.”

I loved how Isavelle learned to embrace her new beginning in her own pace and with caution. Zabriel was sexy and patient. I also liked the supporting characters, but I have to say the dragons stole the show with their personalities and antics.

The Flame King’s Captive is a tale of endurance and destiny. It would appeal to readers who enjoy slow burn fantasy romance.

This is how the first half of this book goes:

Mate/King tries to be gentle and caring..
FMC: I am nobody.
A nice dress?
FMC: violently rejects it and demands a maid's smock....
Mate tries to find her family
FMC: I am leaving and going it alone. Proceeds to gets captured and beaten to a pulp
FMC: nose is constantly in the air for someone who is a nobody
Mate keeps trying to win her over
FMC: I am nobody.
Mate tells her of the dangers of leaving
FMC: Leaves again because she is a dumb bitch
Mate treats her with kindness and care
FMC: he is the enemy

It was painful to read.

I'm not really a slow burn kinda girl but I thought I should give this a try... I appreciate the author's effort, it was overall quite well-written so maybe it's just me, but it ended up being boring and a little disappointing. The story drags so much to the point of becoming annoying. The heroine was soo whiny and resistant, the hero much too weak and tolerant to her every little wish or self-doubt. I like my heroes pushy and downright forceful sometimes, ya know? Just saying, it might be a me problem tho

I liked this book, but be aware it ends on a cliffie! 😩 I enjoyed the build up of their relationship, although it was thisclose to being too dang long. There isn’t any real spice until the last part of the book, but enough was going on and enough tension that it worked out. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I love Lilith Vincent’s books and when I saw the Dragon Masters Mate about to be released I had some catch up reading to do. I really enjoyed the first instalment of the Flame King. It’s full of angsty and heated tension.

War is taking over Isavelle’s lands and she’s captured by the enemy. She doesn’t know what’s happened to her family or her village. She’s about to be sacrificed when a stranger riding a dragon comes to her rescue. Isavelle doesn’t trust her new captor but he’s determined to show her all the wrongs that need putting right.

The Flame King is back and he intends to take everything that belongs to him. That includes his beautiful, sweet mate.

This does finish on a cliffhanger but it gave enough to satisfy for now. The trilogy is finished so I can easily pick up the next book. The dragon masters mate comes out in December and this book already gives a taste of his character.

At the hands of the Brethren, Isavelle Harrow suffered greatly until she is rescued in a nick of time by an unknown man. Thrust into the new world of Zabriel the Flame King, Isavelle doesn’t wish to accept her new station as a Lady or as an Omega. Yet, Zabriel is her Alpha and knows fate will bring them together.

“Please ask me about my knot. I would love to talk about my knot.”

Narrated in dual POV, the character development is steady as Isavelle learns about her family and being an Omega while Zabriel must protect Maledin to secure the throne. From a humble home, Isavelle doesn’t view herself as anything but a servant and her adjustment to becoming the Flame King’s fated mate. Without the proper knowledge and her need to be unchained, Isavelle doesn’t relinquish herself easily. Though Zabriel has been waiting for his Omega for 500 years, he is willing to be patient.

In this series, the fantasy world building is entertaining and I especially liked the dynamic of the dragons. Zabriel and Isavelle are intriguing and her resistance to certain aspects of being an Omega added interest. Additionally, there is a cloud of mystery with the Shadow King and the forces fighting against Zabriel. As the storyline will continue in book 2, I am eager to read what happens next.

The Flame King’s Captive is about fated mates and survival. This book would appeal to those seeking a fantasy romance in an Alpha/Omega setting.

I really thought this would be right up my alley.

* dragons
* omegaverse
* signs of filthyness
* a warrior who never hesitated in killing whoever needed killing

Unfortunately, it wasn't.
It all went downhill after he rescued the heroine from religious zealots who were about to sacrifice her in fire. He brings her to his camp for safety, heads back to kill these evil men, and she runs away while he's gone. She goes back to the village the zealots took her from in the first place. I get wanting to see her family again, but how was this smart? And then she acknowledges that it maybe wasn't the most intelligent thing to do and she ends up back in the hands of the zealots. All while viewing the hero as some kind of demon. Never once did she question the brainwashing she received. Never once did she stop to consider that the male saved her and vowed to never harm her. To kill anyone who thought to lay a hand on her. And he did do that, again and again. She was just not worthy of being read.

So I quit.

Hehehehehe no one told me this was a DV, but I couldn't be any happier😈😈😈

Really, really enjoyed this book, their romance was so sweet and the character building was insane...
Was quite a slow burn, which I loved!

I've got a massive crush on Zabriel and Isavella... And it's been a WHILE since I've read spicy scenes that were that hot🥵🥵🥵
Maybe all that tension and build-up was the reason for it, but it just did something for me😭😭😭

The H was so obsessed with her, and had so many jealous moments...my heart was non stop fluttering😂 Isavella was also such a strong, beautiful character and I genuinely loved how much she opened up to her mate in the end.

Plus, I loved the little teaser of forbidden romance between Stesha and his little ward (and best friends daughter) Zenevieve!!! I would read an entire series just about them! Can't wait to find out what happens to them in the next book.

•Fated Mates
•Dual Virgins (first kisses as well🥹🥹🥹)
•Super obsessed with each other
•No OW/OM drama at all

Sadly had to DNF this at 24% - really struggling with arcs this time. I love her Lilith Vincent books, but I just wasn't gelling with this one; mostly it was Isavelle herself, I just didn't like her. Something wasn't clicking for me with her, and I found her quite whiny and slightly annoying; and I didn't feel she was very 'main character' like. I'm also starting to not be a slow burn reader, I enjoy medium burns, but I wasn't going to wait 400+ pages for a result.

Anyway - I feel sad not being able to finish this but sometimes when you just don't gel with a book and characters, there isn't a need to force yourself; but I hope others enjoy it, and this won't deter me from reading more from her as Chloe should something take my fancy.

Thank you to Give Me Books for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review...sorry I didn't finish it.

I’m in looooooove.
This was too good. If there’s one thing I like about fantasy is when the world building is done right and I felt this one delivers! And what do you mean omegaverse + dragons? Ugh, my favorite tropes together, it’s just perfect.
Isavelle had a beautiful character development, from doubting herself to embracing her Omega self without losing her sparkle aka her attitude. It was fun getting to know more about dragons and the Maledini people alongside her, and all the magic that lives within her. Also, I could write a lot regarding Esmeral, she’s such a precious creature and I’m so glad how Isavelle managed to overcome her fears to give her sweet girl dragon the love she also deserves. The bond between Esmeral and Isavelle, though quite new, is precious.
Now, Isavelle and Zabriel… whew, he’s THAT man 💕 the Flame King is gentle when it comes to his mate, and who doesn’t like it when he’s an Alpha (tall, dark and gorgeous btw😌) who’s soft for his Omega? Zabriel gives me BDE and Cinnamon Roll energy at the same time. Like, he’s so respectful of Isavelle’s desires and personal space, but knows when she needs him to guide her. The tension is delicious, because there’s an innocence to it (if you get, you get it)… and when the smut happens, oh wow, Zabriel’s dirty talk had me blushing but omg Isavelle’s!!!! Love that for her. Lol. Oh! And let’s not forget Scourge, Zabriel’s dragon, I mean, the connection he shares with Zabriel is intense and it’s clear how great they work together.
Of course, there’s a ton of stuff happening besides the relationship of the Flame King and his Queen. I have so many questions about Stesha, the magic barrier, Isavelle’s magic, the High Priest, to mention a few. And that cliffhanger! My mind went blank for a second because that plot twist! Anyways, I loved this book and I’m so excited to see what happens next. I adore Lilith Vincent’s books and her transition to fantasy is well done 🥰 she’s a fantastic versatile author.

This started off great. Right into the action, tension, violence, all good.

I loved the dystopian, villainous religious society that’s the big bad. I even loved Zabriel.

However, Isavelle was insufferable. I understand she has religious trauma and her whole world was uprooted when she realized she was an omega with a fated mate. But girl. Be a little more open-minded? Be a little KINDER????

I’m def curious where this series is going and I’ll try book three but man did I dislike her.
